With the announcement of DOOM: The Dark Ages I saw that the original two games were free with PS plus so I started playing the original game again.
A franchise I’ve always enjoyed but never got very far in, I think the furthest I’ve got in any of them was the third and it still wasn’t very far.
Are you a fan of the franchise and if so what is your favourite game?

I am generally not a fan of the FPS genre, and Doom's theme and actually hellacious aesthetics have never helped me get into it. I remember playing the original on an old Windows 95 computer that my Uncle had back in the day, and I borrowed Doom 3 from a classmate in high school; I didn't get super far, but I replayed it on XBOX years later and almost beat it. Doom 3 was mostly interesting to me as a visual showcase. We were still in an era where some games' graphics were really their selling point ... You might have played something out of your normal purview to experience whatever was pushing those boundaries at that point.

I hate FPS games but I do love me some Doom, one of the coolest game series for sure. My favorite version of the original is Doom 64, even though it's an original game built for the 64 it's still old school Doom. I can say that and Waverace and Mario 64 are my top 3 favorite games for that whole system. I like the level designs and the ambience of it compared to original Doom and Doom II, I don't like the guitar rock that plays in those versions. Doom 64 is darker and creepier. And it's fun with the 64 trigger/analog stick if you map the controls right with the strafe set to the right shoulder button and left c-button(the yellow ones).
I did really like Doom 3 and can say that is one game that really creeps me the fuck out. The jump scares make it hard for me to play that, It's been a while I may need to break out the old XBOX and try it again. I remember watching friends and brothers play it when it first came out and was amazed with it, great story(better than the movie), great voice acting, top notch game.

great story(better than the movie) I honestly kind of enjoy The Rock's Doom; I really feel like there are some moments in it where he is literally just his pro wrestler ass self cutting a heel promo. One of the scenes near the end where he is going off on "Kid" comes to mind. It's a mediocre film, obviously, but it is nothing without some redeeming qualities. Goat was an interesting character; and Rosamund Pike here? LAWD. ☠

It came out on DVD just a few weeks after I watched my little brothers play through the Xbox game and man was so disappointed with it, we were pretty hyped up for it after beating the game. Huge letdown. I don't think they even mentioned hell at all in the movie? I thought that was really weird. There needed to be a Doom movie made in the 90's, like 1996 I feel would have been the perfect time.

I had to re-read the film synopsis, but that's right; they actually went with more of a Resident Evil t-Virus angle for the story. Weird choice, but it also comports with video game to film adaptations generally being bad lol. I remember there was an extended cut DVD where Reaper has a longer scene in "first person" mode, like the game. It did try something, for all its faults. 😂

The first two Doom games are brilliant and it's remarkable how playable they are even now, considering how primitive it is. The appeal arises from its relentlessness, the sheer amount of enemies, guns, and heavily-pixelated gore leaves a strong impression. They are also strong games on the exploration front, there is a surprising amount of secrets.
I also played the new Doom on Steam and I enjoyed the experience, it captured the demon-slaughtering bloodlust of the original quite well, but on modern graphics it somehow lacked the charm of the original games. I never played the second of the modern Doom games.
