I just realized Hangman is at a disadvantage in cage matches because he can’t do the Buckshot Lariat

Fuck chairshot to the head is one way to end this for sure.
Def not the last match, which is awesome. I assume Swerve is taking some time off.

Hanger fucked up the needle spot. i'm scared to ask but uh is there a proper way to do a needle spot? Yeah, you stick it perpendicular to the cheek, push the needle all the way through and squirt the water. Heels almost instantly, but is revolting as fuck for fans to see. Hangman went along with the cheek so the whole needle went in instead of part and did not pop out. The spot was a Thumbtack Jack spot. Needles are sterile and like 16 gauge usually for these so it the same as getting a vaccine basically. They do like no real harm, but get some of the most intense reactions.

What I'm reading is basically every match was a hardcore gimmicky bloodbath?
I guess I'll tune in for Ospreay/PAC and Danielson/Perry...and the aftermath. That's it.

Unless I am misremembering just the Street Fight and Cage Match were. Shida/Mone was very good until they fucked up the finish. Tag title match was alright because of Claudio. Fatal Fourway was solid and worth it for watching Takeshita/Okada. MJF/Garcia had blood but that wasn’t the focal point. They just kicked the shit out of each other. Triple threat trios from the pre show was also really fun.

I saw some matches and I'm not very impressed. MJF/Garcia and Ospreay/PAC were both excessive to the point of stupidity. Especially the latter. Then Mone and Shida have that bizarre finish. No idea what they were thinking. Doesn't help that these two wrestlers have the two worst finishing moves in the company.
I'll save Danielson/Perry for later when I'm in a more wrestling friendly mood. That match might actually have a story beyond "OMG HE KICKED OUT~!!!!"

Perry amd Danielson was pretty good IMO. Good showcase of just how far Perry came so far as a singles guy. Know it is cool to hate on him, but dude seems to really grind away in his ring in his spare time. Easy to forget he signed with AEW after only wrestling a few years.
Main Event also was not nearly as violent as the last match Hangman and Page had. A lot of traditional cage stuff here. Tony also seemed to have grounded Swerve, so his trademark double stomp off the cage did not appear, nor any move off the Cage.

MJF/Garcia I get being annoyed with (I wish their match was more of a slugfest) but I don't know what else you expected from Ospreay/PAC. Their entire careers are built on "do crazy spot -> kick out" They're just better at it than everyone else who does the same thing which is why they're usually forgiven for it. And yeah like I said, Mone/Shida was good until they fucked up the finish. That was like 2 minutes of straight botches then Mone just won with a single move. Fucking annoying because that match would have been her best in AEW by far. I'll rant about Mone being massively overrated another time but I am feeling vindicated by her AEW run so far. I've been saying this since her NXT days and people have been shitting on me for even suggesting that she just isn't very good in the ring.

I know, and I'm not against that kind of match in principle, but there's a line between "THIS IS AWESOME" and "THIS IS STUPID" and it crossed that line about 10 minutes before the match ended. And we'll do it all over again with Ospreay/Ricochet, a match I will not be watching. I'll rant about Mone being massively overrated another time but I am feeling vindicated by her AEW run so far. I've been saying this since her NXT days and people have been shitting on me for even suggesting that she just isn't very good in the ring. I thought she was great in NXT but she has been mediocre or worse since she appeared on the main roster. I can't fathom how she is able to walk into any company and instantly become the top act, winning championships on her first match, consistently. It must be her ability to market herself as a star, even if she's not great at the nuts and bolts of pro-wrestling.

Shafer in BBC should be very, very interesting as well.
I love that people all seem to have collectively forgotten the outrage about the SAW deathmatch Younger and Thumbtack did nearly 20 years back introducing these needle spots to the mainstream. Most deathmatch guys dropped the needles as they were so overused the reaction in deathmatches now to them are yawns. But this freakout shows it still is a very effective spot when used right given how much talk it generated.
Do find it funny that Swerve basically brought to people a 2010 era Cage of Death watch. Like so much Thumbtack and Hyde in this match. Not the era of deathmatches I liked as I am not into the cinderblocks and the needle stuff gets boring fast, but clearly few did check out CZW, and less remember how big Swerve was there.
Really hope they do a final match, they draw from the 80's bunkhouse brawls. They were far more unhinged than anything being done in Japan or CZW.

I feel like you're vastly overestimating how many people watch death matches or care about them. I can't think of a single time I've seen a needle spot outside of like a random grainy YouTube video of a match from 2007 one of my weird friends sent me. I nope'd out of the room when Hangman went for his mouth. Couldn't watch it. It was like a horror movie. I get it if people didn't like it because I certainly didn't. But I wasn't supposed to. That match's story and message was "violence and hate is bad, actually, you freaks," and they got it across beautifully imo. Go back and watch when Hangman was leaving the arena then started back down the ramp like he was going to do more. Half the arena started screaming. And they weren't cheers, they were legit screams of "please stop already."

That 2007 match was the one I was talking about that caused the major freakout about needles in wrestling.
Needle spots are horrifying the first few times you see them. But like Swerve gets powerbombed on a cinderblock and fans are like I sleep, but when gets basically a novocain style prick to the mouth and people are OMFG WRESTLING HAS GONE TOO FAR.
Same for reviving the bag spot, which first was done on Clash of the Champions 8. Super, super safe spot that just looks horrifying, that already is part of the WWE library and on WWE DVDs, and people were like omg this is killing wrestling.
Sure the spots were gross, and shocking, but killing wrestling, I think not. And far, far safer than all the chair shots in classic matches.

I gotta say, I think death matches are going to turn off more fans than they’ll bring in. And I don’t think it’s close.

So despite that being a crazy cagematch, people claiming that was the moment the line was crossed in wrestling really show how little they know of wrestling. Nowhere near as disturbing as the Starcade I Quit cagematch where Tully goes to take out Magnum's eye with a broken silver of a wooden chair. They paid tribute to it last night but that was a lightning in a bottle moment in the original match. This was the match for those who never seen it. Go 10 minutes in. The screams are chilling to this day.

I gotta say, I think death matches are going to turn off more fans than they’ll bring in. And I don’t think it’s close. I find this interesting as people loved the girl's deathmatch on the same show. And everyone wanted Swerve and Hanger to murder each other. The issue seemed to be a single needle spot because it made some people feel grossed out, which was the intention. That said now they did it, no reason to return to that spot again, as like the bamboo skewers it gets old really fast.
