The PS5 Pro has an official price tag of $699, and it doesn't come with a disc drive. The drive will cost an additional $80.
I was kind of looking forward to the Pro as an excuse to replay Cyberpunk (which I own on disc), so this is an impediment. Sony shared a small portion the 40-50 games that will be enhanced for the Pro upon its November release:
Alan Wake 2
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Demon’s Souls
Dragon’s Dogma II
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Gran Turismo 7
Hogwarts Legacy
Horizon Forbidden West
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
The Crew Motorfest
The First Descendant
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Thoughts? I feel like the upgrade didn't have significant buzz before the official announcement; I don't imagine anyone is more excited now. 🤔

Like I said in the hub, the announcement of the Pro being 100% discless was a major misstep.
That being said, I'm still happy with my old PS5, and I don't see myself upgrading the system. I didn't with the PS4 when they released the Pro version, so I doubt I'll be getting this new Pro.

I mean I *guess* if you don't have one already, but why would anyone need to upgrade especially at such a steep price?

I guess maybe Sony don’t see this as a middle ground between PS5 and next gen, and instead see it as a product marketed toward enthusiasts and priced as such. Enthusiasts will throw money into their PC rig for what this costs though. I think it’s going to bomb.

Excuse me for being dim, but what exactly is the upgrade? Why is it better than the PS5?

Whenever the PS6 comes out, it better have a disc drive. I sort of feel like this is Sony testing the waters for that future. First they offered two models of their console, one with and one without a disc drive, and now they are just not offering it ... on an upgraded model. If it bombs, or if there is enough negativity generated around the announcement, that may give them pause. I personally do not like the idea of not being able to collect my media. I am still buying CDs and cassettes occasionally. And then there is the idea that we may not be able to play games we own once the storefronts attached to ageing consoles are closed, etc.

Advanced Ray Tracing as well, Differences between regular PS5 vs the PS5Pro Emperor , up to you if it's worth the asking price or not. Also not all games will be made to utilize the PS5Pro nor will they completely forego PS5 Vanilla sales so your going off a basis of ____ games that will even touch this technology. You also need the appropriate TV to even make this worth your while too, if you don't have a OLED or 4K TV worth a damn, why even bother?

I am still buying CDs and cassettes occasionally. And then there is the idea that we may not be able to play games we own once the storefronts attached to ageing consoles are closed, etc. Sony is doing the business decision and as shown by their policies in the past(Trying to get rid of the PS3 PSN store, Jim Ryan formerly asking why do people still care about the retro side of Playstation), Playstation wants to be digital first and the cost of manufacturing physical discs, dealing with other outlets that can eat a portion of their purchases(Gamestop/Best Buy etc.) etc., that they would prefer to control the narrative and go digital first and foremost. They don't care about preservation from retro to keeping game studios that helped get them to the ballroom dance(Sony Japan) and if they have a say, would prefer the Microsoft route of doing subscription services & having a digital only method to buy games. I will always side with physical media, in large part due to collection and not trusting companies to keep their games out(See P.T. or Scott Pilgrim vs the World or some other misc. Japanese anime titles that go in and out due to license issues). Yes if you buy a game digitally it's "yours" but unless you downloaded P.T. on you PS4, it's lost forever and you are unable to get it again(I have it on my PS4). It took years for a newer version of Scott Pilgrim vs the World to happen. Physical sales always occur more often than digital for newer games anyway. Especially for certain companies like Atlus or SquareEnix. Your at the mercy of whatever PSN is charging or buying off SquareEnix, Capcom etc. website digitally vs looking at $10 or $ 20 dollar price cuts of the newest games 1-2 months in. The $100 dollar diff between PS5 Disc vs digital gets wiped out if you take advantage of price cuts over time which is why I went PS5 Disc for $500. Seeing people defend digital only is lunacy for me as I think it's important consumers get a choice of the two. I would hate to be at the mercy of just 1 option alone because that would not make companies try and slash prices of their games as often. Why buy The Last Of Us 1 Remake(Or whatever title it goes by) at $70 or even at like $50 when on sale when physical has it for $30?

How many of these have been on the market, though? Feels like the GameCube component cable, which was produced in a small enough quantity that it now regularly retails on eBay for several hundreds of dollars (or at least has in the recent past). Sh*tty to nickel and dime consumers, though, when the PS4 Pro was $177 cheaper adjusted for inflation, and $257 cheaper when the price of the disc drive is included.

I was never going to pick it up day one regardless - it was just a matter of knowing that it existed and getting a confirmation of the price. I ball-parked a $1,099 figure, expecting it to be a touch more expensive than a PS3 due to inflation so I wasn't too far off there. It's the disc drive that I didn't factor in, so if I throw that on top that's $1360 and that's before I start buying games for the library.
At that price, I'd be tempted to just upgrade/build a PC. A lot of Sony IPs end up on PC regardless and the only game that would make me go out of my way to buy a Pro would be GTA 6 and even then I'd only be swayed if the Pro improved upon it like the PC/PS4 versions improved upon V.
The PS4 Pro was actually my entry point into the last generation and I was glad I waited until then. Games like The Last Guardian performed so much better on that platform so I was grateful my experience with that game wasn't tainted since it was a system seller.
As it stands, I'll likely revisit the situation in a year's time and see what's changed. By that point, Nintendo should have announced their next platform and I'll likely jump on that since their IPs carry more weight.

Scalpers + People buying to not be scalped/at the mercy of overpriced parts means the Disc Drive is selling out at pretty alarming rates.
