For myself, only being 10 at the time I woke up ready to go school on September 12 (time difference) confused as to why Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z weren’t on. You’ll hear this a lot in Brazil but it actually was scheduled here.

While my dad clued in me in as I just assumed a bad pilot, I still didn’t really get it but that felt like the true end to the 90s for me,

I was a sophomore in high school, sitting in second period math class. My teacher was in her office as the class started, and a few minutes later she walked out, tears in her eyes, and told us what happened.

It was a half day that day (ironically, so was the OKC Bombing years prior), and I watched the news reports all afternoon.

That Thursday, I had my football game. We were standing on the sideline for the National Anthem, when a commercial plane flew oddly low above us. It was an unnerving moment, and even the school band lost track of the song as people watched it fly over.

According to Kamala Harris, this isn’t even top 2 worst things to happen to America since the Civil War.

Probably similar to most since we're all close in age. New school junior year, about a week into the year in homeroon they had the news on which was uncommon. Took forever to get on base that day too. Less than 24 hours before people started setting up vendor carts selling us flags and all that LMAO.

It was 6th grade picture day for me. I had just gotten my picture taken and returned to 1st period when the second plane hit. We all thought it was just a freak accident until that happened (my English teacher had it playing on TV).

I remember we didn't focus on assignments after that, just processed emotions or did filler activities. Some kids were speculating on who was behind it, though it wasn't like anyone was an expert on geopolitics: we were mostly 12 yo.

I lived/live in a really small town, barely 2000 and closer to 1500 at the time. Seeing cars lined up from one end of town to the other waiting for their turn to buy as much gas as possible was a sight I'll always remember. Felt like a fever dream.

But that was all a different country. I live in America II now.

Kids graduating who weren't alive for it was my first big "holy fuck I'm getting old" wake up call.

I imagine lost greatest generation felt similar with boomers & Pearl Harbor.

I really thought it would've become a bbq holiday by now.

I remember it quite clearly. I was in my senior year at High School and I was watching TV in my room late that night, and a flash came up on the news, it was Channel 10's late news after whatever time the movie had finished, and it said there had been an accident in New York - a plane had flown into the WTC and there was little information as yet, as it was breaking news.

I went to sleep, and woke up to a what we knew was a terrorist attack. Given the time difference, it is 6:48am September 12 here now, so it would be approx 4:48pm September 11 in New York right now. I had obviously slept through what would have been a nightmare.

This is when we discovered and started using the 24/7 international news networks we had on Foxtel.

I went to school, and had a free period first thing, so I didn't arrive until after 9:30am at least and everyone was huddled around the TV watching the news.

And I'll be honest, we all moved on quickly. I had my exams coming up and it was nearly the end of High School and I can't remember any more talk of it outside of the news cycle beyond that week.

We were given a caution at school - all the seniors we bought into an assembly and they had invited the local Senior Detective as it was the end of High School and " Muck up Day " was coming up, which is the last day of school officially and everyone goes crazy and pulls pranks, including on rival schools. We were told, given the circumstances.. fuck around and find out. There had also been a sars scare - someone put white powder in some envelopes in the city and everyone was on high alert.

I guess warring over unfair taxes is a bit different than the right to own someone.

It's weird isn't it. I'd imagine in the 60s people turning 20 having no memory of the war outside of literature, despite it shaping their very way of life. The same with 9/11 - the world is what it is today because of what happened 23 years ago today.

I was in college on the west coast and got up at like 10 am. Saw it on TV while still waking up. I was unaware of what Al Qaeda was at that time.

Similarly, when Columbine happened I was in a senior in HS 25 miles away. I didn't hear anything about it until 6th period (3 PMish) and even then it was that "something" had happened. The scale of the attack wasn't known.

Luckily, I was a senior and didn't have to deal with all of the lockdown drills and such in the coming years.

I was in second year of University and had all my classes Mon Wed Fri and always worked Tue Thu. Woke up and had a lazy morning. Turned on the tv later on in the morning and watched in disbelief until I had to go to work.

Had this discussion at work, talking to a co-worker in disbelief that one of the co-workers wasn’t born when it happened. Another co-worker chimes in says he was only 2 when it happened & obviously doesn’t remember it.

In a few decades it will be Covid.

I was at work and me and a bunch of people in the waiting room were watching it on TV horrified. Being married to a military man at the time I knew this was going to change our lives. My daughter was 2-1/2 so I would have been around 25.  I remember crying and hearing others cry as well.  I remember watching for days and weeks afterwards in anguish for all the people's whose families were torn apart that day. It affected so many people's lives directly and indirectly and in many ways changed the world. 

It doesn't feel like 23 years.

It's something I contemplate often, that all experience and truth is subjective... To some extent.

In Australia we have people protesting against the Japanese whaling.
We don't like that the Chinese eat dogs.
We eat Kangaroos, there's no objective reason one animal is more acceptable than another.

Pigs have similar IQs to dogs.

It's also likely many fighting for the confederacy weren't pro-slavery as much as anti federalist control...

I mean most of the people who died would have never owned slaves.

Same deal for BLM and Jan 6th, I see these more alike than different.

Except only the white people got put in prison.
