www.nytimes.com/2024/09/27/arts/maggie-smith-dead.htmlMaggie Smith, one of the finest British stage and screen actors of her generation, whose award-winning roles ranged from a freethinking Scottish schoolteacher in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” to the acid-tongued dowager countess on “Downton Abbey,” died on Friday in London. She was 89. Ms. Smith saw the most fame in the Harry Potter movies, where she portrayed Minerva McGonagall, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’s stern but fearless transfiguration teacher, in seven of the eight films, from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001) to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” (2011).

This one hurt. Again, you know they are getting older and no one gets out alive, but it still sucks. I've enjoyed quite a bit of her work. My mom loved Dame Maggie.

Ruined my wife’s day when I broke the news to her. But she decided it was a good excuse to marathon the Harry Potter movies again (not that she needs one) so there’s that.
She was the best part of Downton Abbey. Reminded me of a more proper version of my grandmother on my dad’s side. Quick-witted and you couldn’t bullshit her because she would call you on it without remorse. A hard-nosed woman that grew up in a man’s world but wasn’t going to take their shit.

From Clash of the Titans to Harry Potter to being the best part of Downton Abbey, RIP Dame Maggie.
