So with Busta Rhymes and Public Enemy both cancelling their gigs I can do this thread earlier and hopefully have it done by the time Supercharged comes out the 11th.
I have all their albums on CD so I can post artworks too.
Annoying they are coming to Australia just to do a Melbourne show and that’s it as Korn and The Offspring are the only two bands left I really want to see live and I can’t make Good Things either.
What is your favourite Offspring album and why? Also have you seen them on tour?

The Offspring(1989) Packaging: (Re-issue CD, original Vinyl pressing is about $450 AUD) SystemEvery band has to start somewhere but can almost see this being retconned as a demo like Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat was by Slipknot as this sucks. Much more of a straight punk rock sound where it sounds like some just hit record on their mates tape recorder in their garage (but not kvlt) and I’m not a fan at all. Didn’t even seek it out intentionally but I’m glad I have a copy with “Kill the President” on it (removed on later pressings for obvious reasons) as that and Beheaded are the only good tracks on this. Rating 2/10 SandyleaHonestly this is my first time listening to the album, and it will probably be my last. It’s extremely obvious that this is their first album - it is not good. Very garage basic sounds. I found it hard to enjoy because I know they get way better in the years to come. There is no standouts on the album, and it’s extremely forgettable. Considering it’s a debut album from 1989, it could be worse but my expectations from their later music hurt it’s rating even more. Rating 2/10

Ignition(1992) Packaging System Still doesn’t quite ignite the crowd. This gained The Offspring a small following in Southern California but still didn’t put them on the map and I can see why. “Get it Right” shows promise of their signature sound coming through and “Dirty Magic” is so nice we will hear it twice on this journey. A slight improvement but that’s not really saying much Rating 3/10 SandyLeaIgnition It’s better than the debut, but there is still something severely lacking that they haven’t found in their sound yet. Maybe this one will grow on me if I listen to it more but I lost interest in it really quick as I knew Smash was up next and it’s a much better album that I’ve been a fan of for years. It’s an average album, with each song blending into one another so no song stands out to me but overall it’s ok. Nothing I would go out of my way for. Rating 3/10

Smash(1994) Packaging: SystemFinally the growing pains are over and The Offspring release a good album and there most successful one to date which surprised me as Americana seemed to spring them into the mainstream, at least how it seemed when I was a kid. This along with Green Day’s Dookie helped punk get a resurgence in the 90s. The three singles are fun as is “Bad Habit” but I still don’t think it’s among the band’s best albums. Have seen merch for this everywhere (well mostly JB HiFi) as of late too now the 30th anniversary is upon us. Rating 6/10 SandyLeaThis one I have always loved, especially the introduction. Straight off it’s fun and it reminds me so much of Crazy Taxi (PS2) that introduced me to The Offspring. This album is very similar to the game and I think it’s why I love it so much. Bad Habit definitely as it is very much about road rage. Come Out and Play has always been such a super fun song, you gotta keep them separated! *jumps around* it’s impossible not to have fun with this song. I especially when through an obsession phase with it in 2021 thanks to the movie Fear Street part 3. It pulled a scene together so well! My next favourite song is Self Esteem, I have always had so much fun with it. My brother used to play it loudly on replay and I think it just set a core memory for it! Overall it’s a great album, but it does slightly die off a bit after Self Esteem but it’s one of my favourite The Offspring albums and should be considered their first true album. Favourite tracks!!!!! Bad Habit, Self Esteem, and Come out and Play! Rating: 8/10

Ixnay on the Hombre(1997) Packaging: SystemI never really noticed how much influence Hispanic culture has on The Offspring’s music until re-listening which I guess shouldn’t be a shock considering they are from California. I hadn’t read sandylea ‘s thoughts prior to these write ups which is amusing considering how similar they are. I have nothing else to add that isn’t addressed below. Rating 6/10 SandyLeaThe Offspring has definitely come into their sound more, this one isn’t as good as Smash and is a much more calmer album/less memorable to me but it is way better than the first 2 albums. It’s more fun especially with the Intermission thrown in and less aggression with songs such as I Choose, but my favourite songs on the album is easily Gone Away and All I Want I will admit with All I Want - for the longest time I actually had actually no idea what he was yelling until I saw the track name 😂😂 Amazed is a song that throws me off initially, as the start of the track sounds incredibly similar to Nirvana, if I never heard the song before and I had to guess who the artist was I don’t think I would’ve even considered The Offspring until the chorus kicked in. It’s a great song, just very different to the sound I’m used to. Ixnay on the Hombre is a short album and a very easy listen. If you are looking at getting into The Offspring this is a good album to get into! Rating: 7/10

Americana(1998) Packaging SystemWhen I politely contributed my thoughts to Cereal Killer’s Albums of my life thread I mention that every kid seemed to have this album and thought it was scandalous. It said bitch! and other bad words and this was always playing on Rage or Video hits: Beside the novelty of the above track and “Why Don’t You Get a Job” there’s plenty of other bangers on this too. “Staring at the Sun”, “No Brakes” and “She’s Got Issues”. The cover of “feelings” is grating even if it’s meant to be a parody and sticks out like a sore thumb on an otherwise brilliant album. Rating 9/10 SandyleaLikely the most known album because of 2 amazing bangers - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) and Why Don’t You Get A Job. Both amazing songs that I’ve listened to forever 😁 they age definitely popular with a lot of generations, my Dad likes them, my older brothers, and even younger generations still enjoy them. This album feels rapid, absolutely chaotic pace especially with the song Staring at the Sun, Walla Walla and No Brakes. She’s Got Issues, this song is hilarious to me especially the lyrics because they are still unbelievably relevant to the world today “I wish you wouldn’t call me Daddy when we’re getting it on” 😂 absolutely brilliant. It’s a really great album, it’s fun, chaotic and has a lot of hilarious moments. It’s not a surprise to me that this is easily one of the most known albums by The Offspring and one of the most known albums from the 90’s. The only song I’m not much of a fan of is Pay the Man, the song does improve a bit but the start of the track is extremely slow and feels very out of place with Americana as a whole. Favourite songs obviously - Pretty Fly, Why Don’t You Get a Job, Staring At The Sun, and She’s Got Issues Rating: 9/10

Speaking of Greatest Hits... no? Oh well, fuck it we are now. They released a GH comp in about 2005 and it was an absolute banger.
The Offspring, IMHO never had a great album, just a lot of great songs scattered over a decade or so, hence the need for a greatest hits album only 10 years after making it big.
I always liked the lesser popular singles, Gone Away, The Kids Aren't Alright and for straight up pop-punk radio goodness, Want You Bad.

They're an interesting band, given the tone so easily shifts. The hits from Smash really play into that mid-90s alt-rock sound, albeit that sound shifting to Punk rather from Grunge, then there's a running Social Distortion influence throughout their entire catalogue and finally with Americana and Conspiracy of One particularly.. a sense of comedy in their writing. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, I suggest Social Distortion. I discovered this band a few years back after completely missing them in their heyday. Given, I was probably 5 when they came out. If my memory serves me well, I remember an interview where The Offspring said one of their hits came out of a challenge to write a Social Distortion song.

Americana was massive, which baffles me that Smash sold more. I remember late 98 and very early 99 being dominated by Americana and Hole's Celebrity Skin before the infestation that was Nu-Metal locked its jaws into the mainstream.

I was a big Offspring fan around the turn of the century. Smash & Americana got a lot of play in the Bakermobile circa 2000-01. Come Out and Play, Self Esteem, Pretty Fly, and Why Don't You Get A Job all got massive radio play here in the late 90s-early 2000s. Come Out and Play was my introduction to the band thanks to ECW/Raven and all those white box ECW tapes I got in '98. Remember humming the iconic Come Out and Play riff to my cousin in a game of 'name that tune' and he knew immediately. Even had the album!
Never saw 'em live though.

Smash was huge and massive in 1994-95, like one of the biggest things in pop culture period. Everyone in the neighborhoods I lived in in Houston had it on cassette tape, the videos were in constant rotation on MTV like all day long, and the hits were all over the radio. I'd say they were even bigger than Nirvana and Pearl Jam at that time definitely in my neighborhoods and schools I was at. That was actually the first CD I ever got my uncle and aunt got it for me for my birthday and it was the biggest deal. I still love that album and cant get into anything they did after that, Gone Away from their next album was cool but I never heard that whole album until recently what a drop off. Then the shift to the pop punk stuff I hated with a passion, not my Offspring.

Conspiracy of One(2000) Packaging: Tracklist 1. "Intro" 0:06 2. "Come Out Swinging" 2:47 3. "Original Prankster" (featuring Redman) 3:42 4. "Want You Bad" 3:23 5. "Million Miles Away" 3:40 6. "Dammit, I Changed Again" 2:49 7. "Living in Chaos" 3:28 8. "Special Delivery" 3:00 9. "One Fine Day" 2:45 10. "All Along" 1:39 11. "Denial, Revisited" 4:33 12. "Vultures" 3:35 13. "Conspiracy of One" 2:17 I did not know that The Offspring intended to release this for free on their website in support of Napster, until Columbia Records put the ixnay on that hombre. Another thread in entirely but I think Lars was right in the long run now nothing outside major acts make any money from recorded music. As some of you already know this is my second favourite album of all time (the first being “The High End of Low” by Marilyn Manson). So I’ll go through track by track then copy/paste my write up after for those who missed it. IntroOffspring trademark at this point. Come out Swinging That they do, frantic fast paced track. Original Prankster The “Pretty Fly “ of this album, great hit. Want You Bad Thought this was so risqué as a kid, now it’s just hilarious Million Miles Away One of the first surprisingly heavy tracks when you read Into this album, yes heavy Meaning heavy for the offspring, telling a story of a lonely life on the road and possibly infidelity (not autobiographical stuff in this album, at least I really hope not) Dammit, I changed again The negative Punk version of forty six and two? Living in ChaosArguably the best track on the album, love the guitar work. Special Delivery A track about being a stalker, only someone Offspring could pull off as it not comedic but also not serious that it’s clear this isn’t a real situation. One Fine Day This song makes me want to go out and drink beer and I don’t even consume alcohol. All AlongShort and to the point track. This album has no fat to trim at all. Denial, Revisited Denial about a toxic relationship working after betrayal, the slowest track on the album and a nice change of pace. VulturesLove the desert vibes this tracks gives. Neck and neck with Living in Chaos as the best track. Unclear whether the cancer is metaphorical or not, but another failing relationship track. Was Dexter Holland ok during this album? “ Yeah‚ save it, I'm okay” There’s my answer. Conspiracy of One Great closing track, a duel with no victors. (“Huck It”’is a bonus track on the Aus version, it’s fun in similar vein of “One Fine Day” (Cut/paste from other thread) Christmas 2000. System gets a Gameboy Colour, Pokémon silver and this album. I also got a disc man at one point (maybe my birthday a few weeks after?) Fantastic times had and many batteries wasted. Everyone in school thought “Why Don’t You Get a Job” was hilarious and scandalous (he said Bitch!) keep in mind I was 9 years old at the time but owning Americana seemed to be something everyone wanted to show off. This had skulls, crude drawnings and the band singing about X-rated stuff. This was long before I loved horror films and things of that nature so I thought this was the edgiest album ever. While a lot of people seem more attached to Green Day this was my go to Punk Rock band of this era. Living In Chaos is a fantastic track, Vultures is probably my most re-listened to track off of this and Million Miles Away is brilliant. Amazed to read this only 37 mins could have sworn it was almost an hour long. A fun album for a much simpler time I my life. Rating 10/10 SandyLeaI honestly think I had more nostalgia for this album more than anything. I remembered it being incredible, especially thanks to Original Prankster but honestly most of the songs on this album are extremely average or even bad. I’m actually disappointed in how bad the album is when I remember loving it so much 😳 My favourite songs are easily Original Prankster and Living in Chaos, and while I wouldn’t call the album horrible, it is absolutely a disappointment listening to it 20ish years later. Rating 5/10

"The Worst Hangover Ever" 2:58 8. "Never Gonna Find Me" 2:39 9. "Lightning Rod" 3:20 10. "Spare Me the Details" 3:24 11. "Da Hui" 1:42 12. "When You're in Prison" 2:35 SystemAfter the great albums in Americana and Conspiracy of One can The Offspring get the hat-trick? It’s a resounding no. Remember when I said I had no musical knowledge despite doing this threads? Well good people of PW… lied. Because I had to play “Hit That” on keyboard for my music class well over a hundred times to practice for a performance that never happened. & use to take piano lessons but couldn’t even bust out hot cross buns these days. So despite how many times I’ve heard “Hit That” it remains the best track on the album not that, that is saying much. Spare Me The Details,Can’t get my head You & Long Way Home are good but that’s about it. Good they took a five year break between albums after this as its clear the well was dry. Rating 4/10 SandyLeaThe 7th album from The Offspring and they have definitely come into their sound more. Splinter is similar to Conspiracy of One, but more on the fun side. The first few songs play through pretty quick, but about half way it really picks up with (Can’t get my) Head Around You which is my second favourite song on the album. The following so The Worst Hangover Ever is fun, and the beat remind me a lot of Get a Job and Pretty Fly for a White Guy from Americana. My favourite song off the album!!! Spare me the Details - such a fun song (even despite the topic) and excellent lyrics. I have always enjoyed it, and the beat is the best on the album. When You’re in Prison is an extremely interesting and amusing track to end the album on Overall Splinter is a pretty enjoyable album, and I would happily listen to it more. Rating: 7/10

"Takes Me Nowhere" (2:59) 7. "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?" (3:42) 8. "Nothingtown" (3:29) 9. "Stuff Is Messed Up" (3:32) 10. "Fix You" (4:18) 11. "Let's Hear It for Rock Bottom" (4:04) 12. "Rise and Fall" (2:59) SystemAfter a five year hiatus this is The Offspring’s “Blink 182 (self titled)” moment. A lot more sombre and a lot less jokes this time around. And it works, “Kristy are you doing okay?” “You’re going to go far kid” being the two highlights especially. It does lack energy in parts but it’s good to see another great release after the disappointment that was “Splinter”. Rating 8/10 SandyLeaRise and Fall, Rage and Grace This a very fast paced, much more rock album and I love it. It’s extremely fun and every song is pretty enjoyable until the last 3 tracks and then it dramatically changes sounds. Fix You, is the main example, it’s a great song and I was really enjoying it but it sounded so much like Simple Plan I was shocked that this was The Offspring I was still listening to. The most confusing this as well, when this album was released it was heavily criticised for The Offspring not changing their sound at all - and maybe because I enjoy the album so much it seems different to me, but I swear they weren’t this ‘rock based’ before? And absolutely did not sound like Simple Plan 😅 Half-Truism, Trust in You, and Fix You are my main favourites on the album. Rating: 7/10

"Cruising California (Bumpin' in My Trunk)" 3:30 7. "All I Have Left Is You" 5:18 8. "OC Guns" 4:07 9. "Dirty Magic" 4:00 10. "I Wanna Secret Family (With You)" 3:01 11. "Dividing by Zero" 2:22 12. "Slim Pickens Does the Right Thing and Rides the Bomb to Hell" SystemDays definitely went by between the release of Rage and this one. By this point I’d largely forgotten about The Offspring since Splinter as “Hit That” was big in 03 when I started high school. By 08 I was finishing high school (There is no middle school in Australia) and had broaden my listening horizon and was rudely awaken they were still around when the track below made the news. This is pretty much “Rise and Fall” part 2 but not as good. Even though it’s satire “Cruising California” is still a chore to listen to. If you don’t remember what I’m talking about, click below at your own risk. This and “I wanna secret family with you” (the Dave Grohl anthem) are the few laughs on the album and it’s another Lance Storm “Can I Be Serious for a minute” album but it still works. Rating 7/10 SandyLeaI may offend a few people when I say this, but this album sounds more like Simple Plan and Blink 182 than The Offspring. It’s extremely different to their other albums, and it’s actually pretty good considering how different the sound is. It’s a fun album, though Cruising California is a bit cringey for the band and I personally don’t like OC Guns at all. It is different but the chorus it’s just stupid and annoying to listen to. The first 5 songs of Days Go By are enjoyable, and I especially like the track Turning Into You the most of the first half of the album. On the second half of the album, I Wanna Secret Family (With You) is also such a really fun listen. Could definitely jump around, singing stupidly along with the song. Days Go By is such a fun album, that is absolutely different to anything else they have done so far and while it sounds like other bands - it is such a fantastic sound to come from The Offspring. "Coming for You" 3:49 7. "We Never Have Sex Anymore" 3:30 8. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" (instrumental) 1:00 9. "The Opioid Diaries" 3:01 10. "Hassan Chop" 2:20 11. "Gone Away” 3:16 12. "Lullaby" 1:12 System” Days Go By” could have also been a fitting title for this with a whopping nine year wait between LPs. Unlike the delay with Days Go By seeming to be mostly tour related this album was inexplicably delayed countless times with the band saying the album would definitely come out in __ year only for nothing to come of it. The bad times did roll when Covid hit and the title track is definitely a reflection of that, with the band getting semi-political again. Not to make this an OT thread but their drummer Pete Parada also made news being controversially fired for refusing to get the Covid vaccination due to suffering from Guillain–Barré syndrome. Also not the first drummer to be fired by the band… Speaking of Covid, hope the statute is up as in 2021 I skipped town for a bit. Woke up to the news my area was going to into lockdown at 6pm. Only essential business would be open, stay home otherwise. My dad texts me to come stay with him. So I have a quick shower then take the 7 hour drive to stay with my dad while this craziness calmed down. So I had only a handful of CDs and this was one of them that I listened to on repeat all the way there and for good reason. Probably their most fun album since “Conspiracy of One” with track 7 and Hassan Chop. The slower stuff is great too and I really love the new version of “Gone Away”. Great road trip album, really loved it and was surprised to see how bad the reviews for this were, being named one of the worst albums of 2021. I returned home after a short stay (and not spreading Covid through the town 😒) undetected to come back to the bad times rolling and enjoying another lockdown. Rating 9/10 SandyLeaLet the Bad Times Roll I love this album, it’s a fun, quick paced, rock/punk album and I just have the best time listening to it every time. This Is Not Utopia, is such a strong start to the album and it gets even better with Let The Bad Times Roll - instantly I’m in a great mood to listen to a brilliant album. Admittedly when it hits the 4th track I am a bit disappointed as I’m not a huge fan of Army of One, but it doesn’t take long for the album to win me back over with the Coming For You and then the next track even more We Never Have Sex Anymore is just such a great memorable track and it’s by far one of the standouts on the album. The remaining tracks on the album are fast paced, and enjoyable but I do miss the absolute fun I have with the lyrics of We Never Have Sex Anymore, but they are short and quick songs so after the album finishes it’s easy to jump back and give the track another listen. Overall, it’s a great album and strangely it’s the one I’ve listened to the most despite all the classic The Offspring songs being spread out over multiple albums. If I couldn’t pick The Greatest Hits album to be my go to The Offspring album to always listen to, this is the winner. Rating 9/10

"You Can't Get There from Here" 3:54 System Released not even an hour ago, unlike Fantano I’m not asleep at the wheel😒. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it sounds like Dexter’s voice sounded slightly pitched up throughout this sans or two tracks. This mostly sounds like other pop punk bands of the mid 2000s (as you’ll see mentioned below) but in a really good way. There’s still some hints of classic Offspring with “Come to Brazil” which you’ll see spammed on any band’s tour announcement ever and Truth in Fiction. “Get Some” easily worst track on the album. But the highlights are tracks like “Ok, but this is the last time” “Hanging by a thread” and the very pop styled intro “Looking Out for #1” You can’t really fault The Offspring for leaning on other bands in the same genre for inspiration (as they likely influenced said bands being veterans of the genre) but if you’re expecting The Offspring off old you will be disappointed. If you go in with an open mind and don’t mind it sounding similar to other bands I think there is a lot to enjoy here. Rating 8/10 SandyleaDid I accidentally click on make The Offspring sound like Simple Plan filter? Maybe I’ve lost my mind - but they sound really similar now. Lucky for me I really like both bands, so I’m enjoying the quick upbeat track but I also won’t be surprised if many people are thrown off at first. Great start to the new album Supercharged. Light It Up If it wasn’t for the fact, I saw the track change I would easily believe it was still Looking Out For #1. It’s exactly the same - fast and upbeat track. The Fall Guy The third track has a different sound, and has slowed down slightly. There is more focus on the vocals, the first two tracks were so quick it was hard to decipher what he was saying at times but this track is much easier to just listen to the words. Make It All Right I really like this track, it’s fun and catchy but I find the female lyrics don’t really fit into the song and takes me by surprise every time. After a few listens I may get used to it, but just seems like an odd placement on my first listen. Ok, But This Is The Last Time I am in love with this song already, just from the first line I knew this was going to be my favourite and I will definitely be listening to this track often. I won’t be surprised if this song will be loved by the female fans more than than the males, it’s very similar to the band Boys Like Girls. This song would be so much fun in concert. Truth in Fiction Sounds like more classic The Offspring from earlier albums in their career. Not the best song, but pretty decent. I would have had this track earlier in the album, rather than come in the second half or at least further away from track 5. Come to Brazil The track is hilarious, and I’m sure Brazil is going to love it and well demand they come to Brazil. I can only imagine this song playing at a sports event 😂 Get Some Pretty average track, nothing bad but nothing overly special or memorable. Hanging By A Thread Fun song, pretty catchy lyrics and great vocals. I would say this might be my second favourite track on the album. You Can’t Get There From Here The last track on the album, it’s a great song lyrically and has a pretty decent beat to it. Instrumentally it’s a great way to end the album and having 10 tracks was perfect pacing. Overall, I really loved Supercharged and will absolutely listen to this album way more. I did save myself repeating comments on every track, this entire album sounds more like Simple Plan (or even Blink 182) than it does sound like The Offspring so I wouldn’t be surprised if some hardcore fans aren’t fans, but I loved it!
