You should start a scarecrow business, because no one builds strawmen quite like you. I’d definitely use plastic straws. I upset a room of business owners because I admitted, I would sacrifice maybe two sea turtles for lifelong use of plastic straws. I don't even know what the going rate is for plastic straws to turtles...

The paper straws have a taste that's off-putting. There has to be something better.

The thing I don’t understand is why they don’t make biodegradable straws that are close to plastic. We have biodegradable utensils at our job site and aside from being a little bit softer, you literally can’t tell the difference between them and plastic.
I use them all the time and the only thing they don’t hold up well against is boiling water. I accidentally melted a spoon that way.
Why did they go right to paper? Why not this material?
Also it’s fucking ridiculous that we can’t use straws and bags but our government won’t clean up the hundreds of abandoned oil wells around western Canada, and the plants I work at in northern Alberta keep getting bigger and bigger and exhausting more emissions.

Also it’s fucking ridiculous that we can’t use straws and bags but our government won’t clean up the hundreds of abandoned oil wells around western Canada, and the plants I work at in northern Alberta keep getting bigger and bigger and exhausting more emissions. Without exposing what I do for a job, I work in something very close to this space and it is alarming how messed up industries can become because of policy. We might say biodegradable packaging is better than plastic but both are recyclable. There is also an emphasis on recycling, but very little work is done on measuring the difference in energy consumption between one process and another. Some products are shipped overseas for recycling, so measure the carbon footprint of that... Most damage to the waterways comes back to people littering. I see much more advantage in protecting drains to stop litter and also in fining people more heavily for littering... Switching to paper straws is not going to have much environmental impact... We need a thread on this...

Was on a flight and a guy asked for a straw and they didn’t have any due to the no plastic. Meanwhile every meal is plastic packaging galore.

Are you against those new sippee lids? Idk what they are? A plastic lid, with a spot you can open up to take a sip.

A plastic lid, with a spot you can open up to take a sip. I hate them. Qdoba switched to them and they are terrible in the car. Huge opening with no way to seal it like some coffee lids that have a movable flap. I take a second lid, reverse it, and put it on top to control spillage. Great job, you doubled plastic usage.

There is one thing worse than the paper straw, has the US instituted the "wooden spoon" for the McDonalds Sundae. It is the absolute worst, the texture of the wooden spoon is so awful.
Also baffling, wooden spoons are not the product of recycling like paper straws, a wooden spoon is made from virgin trees. So how is this environmentally better than plastic?
We have some companies here that use a paper spoon, but it has a coating and is not recyclable. That is another thing most people don't know, most paper coffee cups cannot be recycled and shouldn't go in a paper recycling bin, because the cardboard is covered in a plastic film.

One thing that the vast majority of the world is united on - paper straws suck. Slurpees, smoothies, milkshakes, and other extremely cold, thick beverages are ruined by paper straws.
I keep ordering plastic straws from China. I know I know, I'm such a bad man.

WOODEN SPOONS ARE THE DEVIL All the takeout places in Fort McMurray use them. Thank fuck I don’t live in a hotel anymore up here because I was about to commit mass genocide to find some fucking utensils. I straight up started carrying a little kit of utensils and dishes with me from home.

We use metal straws sometimes but we have a pretty big stash of plastic straws.
