No this isn’t a troll post sandylea ‘s dad is looking for a game to play on PS5/PS4. He just plays Days Gone over and over with the occasional sprinkle of Fallout Shelter thrown in. He bought a PS5 to play Skull & Bones despite Sandra telling him it was mid & it was online. The two warnings on the box art didn’t give that away either. So he is after an FPS game that: - Has no online functionality (even if it’s optional) - is human vs human (no vampires/zombies/aliens etc) - isn’t too hard (definitely not soulslike) - No Far Cry

Rage 2, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein 2: New Colossus, Metro Exodus, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Bulletstorm all come to mind.
I think technically every game has online functionality due to the PS Trophy system. Which features is he concerned about because that could narrow the list somewhat?

Rage 2 and Metro Exodus are more monster enemies so he isn’t interested in that, I previously bought him the Wolfenstein games and he didn’t really get into them - can’t remember exactly why but he went back to playing Far Cry. Killzone he isn’t interested in mainly because it looks robotic. He basically doesn’t want to have to play with anyone online, or have anyone join the game or be involved in the game. Requiring online for trophies/updates doesn't matter. He just doesn’t want to do any online games like Call of Duty even though I reckon he would love it

It's been awhile since I've played either, but I thought they were largely humanoid with the odd post-apocalyptic mutant seeping through ala Days Gone. Is he aware games like Call of Duty and Battlefield have solo campaigns and he doesn't have to engage with the online component at all?
What other FPS games has he enjoyed?

Yes, but sometimes the campaigns aren’t every big so it’s a lot of money for half a game. Also the nonstop huge updates would piss him off 😂 They aren’t all necessarily FPS he likes but he usually loves the Far Cry franchise (he didn’t like the last one), Days Gone, Resident Evil (the OG’s) he doesn’t really like the new ones despite me forcing him to play them and he has no interest in the remakes, he loves the Uncharted franchise and has replayed them a lot, Lara Croft Tomb Raider OG’s - he isn’t interested in the newer ones at all. He liked Red Dead Redemption 1 and the zombies spinoff. He hasn’t really played the second one because the missions are too long (apparently). He has definitely slowed down with gaming/getting more picky as he has aged but not sure if it age related or he just misses games being more straightforward. He also loved Age of Empires back in the day and he mentioned he missed playing that. Likes the civilisation games/theme hospital etc. but he struggles now with the super small writing.

Would it be worth considering something like Battlefield 1 or an older Call of Duty game? You can pick them up for less than $20 and you should be able to get some mileage out of it.
Has he tried a Just Cause game? Assassins Creed? Ghosts of Tsushima? Ghost Recon? Prince of Persia?
Does he have access to the internet? Would he be open to a PS Plus subscription so he could access a library of games?

He doesn’t want to play old games on the PS5 because he doesn’t see the point 😅 He has played and loved Ghost of Tsushima, I’m hoping he will also be interested in the sequel coming. He hasn’t tried the others, though I own all the Assassins Creed games so I have tried to convince him to give them a shot. No luck so far. I bought him a PS+ subscription for his birthday when he got the PS5 because he needed it for Skull and Bones but so he could get the free games I thought he would enjoy. Thats when I found out he wasn’t interested in the majority of games I thought he would be. Even recent ones he downloaded the soccer and cricket games but hasn’t really looked into them. He has gotten into Stranded Deep recently which was free but that’s a love/hate relationship.

I'd really push Black Flag. I'm not that familiar with the Assassin's Creed franchise but I'm sure he can dive straight in and get that experience he was looking for from Skull and Bones. Otherwise there really isn't anything out that ticks all the boxes. I'd say the best bet would be a relatively recent Call of Duty game, or keep an eye out for Six Days in Fullujah. All the other FPS games have different themes - if he's open to it, maybe keep an eye out for Stalker 2 or the next DOOM game.
If he just wants a good PS5 game that's a joy to play and bit of a throwback - go Astro Bot.

I would have also said the newer Wolfenstein games.
And it's more stealth than FPS but maybe he would like Dishonored 1 & 2. It's a game with loads of freedom in what you can do to accomplish a goal. Can be a pacifist and kill no one or be total chaos and kill all. You do get superpowers from time stopping to teleporting to mind control but you are facing humans and human controlling machines.
It isn't a shooting FPS but it's first person perspective and you are encouraged to do missions in any way you can.
Bioshock Infinite might be a good bet for him as well, I think it gives you more human fights than the previous Bioshocks. If he likes Bioshock Infinite maybe he can try 1 and 2. It isn't fully devoid of mutants though.

Rise of the Ronin and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice are like this. Sekiro unlike most Soulsbourne games does not have online functionality(IIRC)/invasions but it is a tough game so IDK if it's for him. Very, very parry heavy.

Yeah I reckon he would love Black Flag so I was trying when he hated Skull and Bones pretty instantly. He never got into Doom back in the Nintendo64 days so I’d say it’s a no go but we shall see. I was considering Astro Bot but I have a feeling he is going to see it as a children’s game -_-

I did try and get him on to Bioshock when I played them originally and he wasn’t interested but I may need to get it another go as I never actually finished them. Sometimes if he sees me playing a game he gets interested 😂

Very, very parry heavy. He was originally interested in Rise of the Ronin until I made a mistake of mentioning it was hard like Sekiro/Dark Souls etc. so he immediately lost interest. He definitely won’t touch Sekiro either because he has witnessed me rage at the game and say how much I nagged it 😂😂 I’m not a patient person so the fact it’s all about waiting and parrying - not for me and definitely not for my Dad 😂 I was even considering getting him Black Myth Wukong but knowing the difficultly System and I had with some fights, my Dad would absolutely rage and never touch it again. He really doesn’t like super difficult games. He didn’t even beat the very first boss in Dark Souls 3 , I don’t think he gave it a proper chance but if I even hint at the game being hard like Dark Souls he will not go near it. He doesn’t mind playing his favourite games on the hardest difficult eg. Days Gone but he just wants to enjoy the game for the gameplay/story.

Staying with Sucker Punch's model of an open world game, has he tried InFamous: Second Son or Spider Man(Insomniac)? I know it isn't FPS but they are easy enough to digest superhero open world games.
He will def prob. love the new Assassins' Creed: Shadows that is coming in FEB 2025 though.
I assume Fallout franchise isn't up his alley?

InFamous I think he might’ve have tried the first one or at least watched me play it, he wasn’t a fan of the gameplay. Spiderman he has zero interest in, the same with Batman games, God of War etc. Fallout 4 would absolutely be up his alley, and I’ve suggested it multiple times and he keeps saying mmm maybe later. I think he wants a more straightforward game and not something that has a million side quests as that was his main problem with Oblivion/Skyrim

Is PS3 an option? He would probably enjoy Spec Ops: The Line. It's easy enough on normal difficulty, has great mechanics and probably has one of the deeper stories for an FPS. It's actually the only game I've ever completed on the highest difficulty level lol (experience got better as it got harder!). It's a shame it hasn't been remastered for current gen consoles.

We still have a PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. I think our Xbox360 may be dead, it’s been awhile lol so yeah old gens are available to use but he wants a new game made specifically for the PS5 or at least the PS4 that has been remastered/remade. It’s just unbelievably impossible to find a game that he will actually play and like. He won’t even play The Last of Us despite the fact I know he would love it, he originally wasn’t even that keen on Days Gone but he has completed that game at least 20 times now. At this point I need them to make a sequel like my sanity depends on it 😂😂 I swear I’m not being difficult! There is a lot of games I love, I’m a huge gamer and he is so difficult. Even the OG Diablo was one of his all time favourite games but he won’t touch the new one because it’s ‘online’ and the dungeons are gigantic -_-

I'm curious sandy, was your dad big on renting games back in the day?
Because I just imagine it's so much harder now than it was before to get into new series. Especially if you're not following the news and getting caught up in the previews etc.
