Sorry in advance for the long post, but I have a really difficult situation going on with my health and need some advice.
For the last year, I've been having health struggles. I found out last November that I have a really complex fistula, which is an abnormal tunnel between tissue/organs that causes abscesses and infections. I've had 10 surgeries in the last 12 months and several hospitalizations. The abscesses keep coming back and nothing has helped. I am on my 4th surgeon. They aren't really sure what caused the fistula, but they think it's Crohn's Disease, so I've been getting medication through an IV at an infusion center every couple of months. My most recent surgery was scheduled for Tuesday 11/12, but I ended up going to the hospital a few days prior because the pain was so severe. My surgeon told me if I had waited another 2-3 days, I could have died.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at age 15 during my sophomore year of high school. After over a year of trying every medication possible, nothing seemed to help, so I ended up having my colon removed at age 16. I had an ileostomy (aka "bag"), but luckily it was temporary and after 3 months had it reversed. I was totally fine for 17 years up until last Fall. I went for a scope and was told everything was fine and that I could even go every other year instead of yearly. 6 weeks later is when this new issue started. I believe the surgeon punctured me during the procedure, because fistulas can be caused by trauma to the area and that's the only trauma to the area I had. I've contacted several attorneys, but they all said that it would be nearly impossible to prove in court.
Anyway, there is a surgeon in India who performs a surgery that isn't performed anywhere else in the world who has a 99.9% success rate. I connected with several patients from the USA who went there and he was able to cure them. The problem is that this surgery is VERY expensive, and obviously not covered by my insurance since it's outside of the USA. I'd also have to stay in India for 3-4 months and have to quit my new job which I just started this year.
Never in a million years did I think I'd consider this, but do you think it is a bad look or tacky to make a GoFundMe for yourself to raise money for this? I truly wish I could afford to pay for it on my own, but I just don't have that kind of money laying around. I still have student loans and other debt that I've been paying down and this would be an enormous setback for me, financially. Especially considering that I have no idea how long it will be until I can land a new job once I do come back.
Please give your honest thoughts. Thank you all in advance for reading this.
