Saw X Return to form. Like a Pusha T or a Cannibal Corpse album it’s the same old but it’s a winning formula. Reminded me of a band reuniting after years apart, they are just going to play the old hits without too many surprises but nice to see them again. Traps aren’t as gory as 4-7 but they still work. Really cool to see Hoffman again too, even if briefly

Was so unexpectedly good. Like this was the team that did 6 and Jigsaw, so I had very, very low expectations, then they know it out of the park.
///
Watched Butterfly Kisses tonight. It was amazing. Found footage film, that also is a meta-commentary on the genre. About two film students that look at the legend of Peeping Tom, or the The Flickergeist of Ilchester Tunnel in Ellicott city. In typical found footage style, something happens to them and a team gets the tapes and tries to put together first what the fuck happened, and second, was what they were investigating even real.
I ignored this for years, but Gemma Files said she liked it so gave it a shot. One of the best found footage films I seen as they really did a great job of balancing the story of the original tapes and the modern investigation of them. Also the whole is it real or a hoax framing really worked well. Just so well done.
Film was produced by Eduardo Sánchez who did Blair Witch and his influence is very clear. Sadly the director killed himself during the COVID pandemic so this is his last film.

I watched Matchstick Men for the first time tonight. Brilliant film, it took a second too long for it to hit me at the end and then I had a full on brain tsunami. I waited 20 years too long to watch this masterpiece.
I've already been on a Nicolas Cage kick, so I think this should perfectly segue into exploring some more unchartered Rockwell territory now.

Expend4bles Definition of phoning it in, super cheap looking film like on Asylum levels. I though it was just a generic action film until They have Stallone “Die” at the start and then turns out he faked his death in the end in some stupid twist and is only in 10 minutes of the film
The Exorcist: Believer The Exorcism scene is cool but the rest of the film i’d have no idea it was meant to be related to the exorcist series until the third act. Much like Halloween Ends it just shoehorns in the franchise it wants to be a part of.

Got love the sequel for Exorcist: Believer has a release date already. Despite it being crap, they started production of a sequel before release.

Barbie, visually appealing and some entertaining performances, honestly didn't do much for me though, a lot of it fell flat. Wasn't terrible, but I was expecting something better with all the hype. Just kinda there, Gosling's Ken was a riot though.

ELEMENTAL - A decent enough watch, I enjoyed it for what it was, which is saying something considering the last Pixar movie I actually enjoyed before this one was Soul.

I may be biased having watched in the afterglow of my Italian holiday but I loved Luca. I think the "Pixar has fallen off" narrative is way overblown.
Elemental was cute and visually amazing, but I think they could have done a little bit more with the other elements beyond the main characters. That would have toned down the immigrant story which was a little bit heavy handed.

Saw Pet Semetary: Bloodlines, it was as good as the remake, take that for what it's worth. Though it makes Judd even more of a dick, like, he definitely knew how wrong things were gonna go, and he didn't even tell them to go for the eyes. Fuck you, Judd.
Also binged the Equalizer trilogy, the first remains the best, but the latter two are both solid action flicks still, Denzel really carries the whole thing, not as good as the Wick sequels, better than the Taken sequels.

I thought Elemental was fine, but also was exactly what I thought it was from the minute of the first trailer and never really rose above it. It did get a little emotion out of me with the father-daughter stuff but I’m an easy mark. It was fine.
I watched Dumb Money the other night. It will be a terrific cable movie, it’s 90 minutes, has a few fun scenes, and was reasonably entertaining. Hadn’t seen a movie in this zone in a while, I think I’ve only seen cartoons and horror movies for the last several months, so I had a good time.

Did Bloodlines in the horror thread. Great if you read the book, skippable if not. I got pissed they showed a sculpture of the Wendigo but did not mention it otherwise. Really do not get why all the films shy away from it, as the books heavily imply it behind everything, including why Judd stays and sends more people it.

Killers of the Flower Moon I should have walked out of this, inexcusably slow & drawn out. And to make matters worse
The fate of the characters you’ve been watching for almost 3 1/2 hours is just told to you by a guy with a microphone and you don’t even see it
I also specially went to a session with open captions as my hearing isn’t the greatest and they uploaded the wrong file with no captions.

Dumb Money
It’s ok, wish version of The Big Short. Few laughs here and there to make the telling of this story less dry but it’s not a laugh out loud comedy as some marketing would suggest.
Five Nights at Freddy’s
I’ve only played the first game so I’m not heavy into the lore like some but this was a good M rated (PG13) horror film. Makes me old when people are excited for this as they played the first game as a kid
And I was 23 when it came out 😂

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant MayhemHad to skip iron maiden's Halloween party last night due to everyone in my house being some kind of sick, so we ordered pizza and watched the new TMNT movie. And I gotta say, that might be one of my favourite movies of all-time. The animation is incredible, the cast is phenomenal, the soundtrack kicks all kinds of ass. Nothing I can say can tell you how happy watching this movie with my kids made me. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favour.

Nowhere:
I love survival films and this was no different, especially with a protagonist you really want to root for.
The Killer: Finding out David Fincher directed this made my expectations very high and they weren’t met, however if I stumbled across this on Netflix later this month unaware I’d enjoy it what it was. It’s a good cliche assassin film but nowhere near the quality of his other works (even Alien3, which I like).

The Dive:
If you’ve seen 47 Metres Down or Fall, you’ve pretty much seen this film. It’s enjoyable but definitely not the most original film around.

I watched The Burial on Amazon Prime. If you’ve ever seen a “little guy takes on big corporation in the courtroom” movie, all the tropes are here. Movie formulas exist for a reason and so this one is entertaining but nothing unexpected.

Great find Mike. I missed this completely. Watching it now and you are right, it does not reinvent the wheel, but these films do not need to, and tend to suffer when they try. Def a lot of fun if you like this kind of film, which I do.
And man Tommy Lee looking rough these days. Jamie Foxx was a powerhouse in this.

The Marvels sandylea asked me if I spiked the popcorn with drugs halfway through this film. They go a planet where the people sing and dance as a language and Captain Marvel sides a sings song and dance number with the Prince..they get what they went to the planet for and leave.
Almost completely irrelevant to the plot. The SFX look like a Star Trek Next Generation episode and that started airing in the 80s. One scene in this could have been re-cut to be a great horror scene though.

Rewatching Apocalypses Now Redux. Like this film more and more each time I see it. It the masterpiece of masterpieces for me. Great adaptation, better film. Made more impressive by how insane the filming was. Last time I watched it was on my 70+ inch 4K curve(RIP) and it looked beyond amazing on that thing, pixels started dying in one spot and it kept growing, just a huge black spot. I kept calling and calling to get it repaired but they just pushed me off until after the warranty expired to tell me they couldn't fix it because the warranty was up. Last I heard they just stopped making TV's like that? The picture was criminally good, like freakishly good, breathed new life into even older regular DVD's. But if it was blu ray or a 4K release it was mind blowing and nothing hits as hard anymore, I miss it.

Freelance: I try to avoid reviews but saw a video talking about this having 0% on rotten tomatoes so my expectations were low. John Cena carried the movie but it’s a decent popcorn movie to watch on streaming or on a plane. upload

Rewatched Under a Silver Lake. One of the most underrated films that came out in the last decade. Total box office bomb, but a fantastic 90's inspired youth neo-noir film. IMO far better than It Follows. I liked It Follows, but I loved this. Andrew Garfield really shined here.

So watched Dumb Money, the Gamestop movie about Roaring Kitty. It was pretty good. They managed to bring in a lot of the memes. A lot of fun pandemic era culture memes too snuck in.
Was way better than this had any right to be as a Social Network knockoff. Writing was just fantastic. While no Cruella, Craig Gillespie brought a lot of style to this too.

The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Song Birds and Snakes
This is way better than it had any right to be, I don’t like the series much due it it being a blatant Battle Royale rip off, this being 8 years after a last Hunger Games film released and a prequel where you know the characters fate I had little hope.
So when it was great I was very pleasantly surprised, first two acts were great 3rd lulled a little but nothing too bad.

Finally caught Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. If you like Bowser it was hilarious. If not could see people getting annoyed with some of the humor.
Hope he gets the cash to make another one as he sets up sequels.
Perhaps the scene of the film.
