Hell yeah to Ben Foster. I thought Hell or High Water was okay , don’t know I’d ever go back and watch it though. That's fair, I'm not sure I would either. But I also wouldn't turn it off if it happened to be on. I really liked the visual aesthetic of the film, and it had a great soundtrack. I couldn't tell what my favorite part was. Ben Foster was great, but Jeff Bridges is always godly. If forced to pick, I think my favorite was the interaction with the old "what don'cha want" waitress.

So while trying to figure out how to access Steelers, knocked out another movie: Her
Very well done. Joaquin Phoenix is very talented overall, and Scarlett Johannson is an incredibly talented voice actress. So I really dig those aspects. Also, I was surprised by how star-studded this movie was. Wasn't expecting that. Especially considering it's mostly just Joaquin.
Overall, it struck me as a mix of Ex Machina, Eternal Sunshine, and Lost in Translation with like a Wes Anderson color palette/fashion sense.

Caught Tag, fun enough, not uproarious, but solid chemistry. Nothing I'd go out of my way to watch again. 2.5/5

I watched Hot Shots Part Duex just now. This is a spoof comedy starring Charlie Sheen from 1993. I picked this one and the first one up on DVD at a shop I go to that had a 20 DVDs for $20 deal. I watched the first one on Prime a year or so ago and couldn't make it all the way through it before turning it off(even though it does have some funny parts). Maybe it's the weed but I laughed pretty hard for this one. This was the first time I have seen this in ages, I was prepared to cut it off early because I knew how immature and stupid it is but I thought what the hell, I'm in the mood for some comedy and this caught my attention on my shelf so why the hell not. Ended up really laughing my ass off at certain moments. It is indeed stupid as fuck and some of the jokes were like they were written by a 12 year old but for the most part this was actually a good time. Some good spoofs of Rambo 2/3, Terminator 2, American Gladiators, all kinds of shit, the homage scene to Apocalypse Now was cute. The laughs definitely fall off after the first hour or so but I stuck with it and enjoyed it. Sheen's brother Emelio Estevez' National Lampoons Loaded Weapon 1 released that same year was better though.

Even more impressively Samantha Morton was the original voice and they replaced her with Scarlett in post production and you can’t tell at all. The Predator: Haven’t seen the others except the two AVP films but I enjoyed, solid popcorn film.

So 🤯 , when can we expect the Mandy review? I've watched the Red Letter Media review, now I need the real Cage expert to weigh in.
That's an outrage.
It at least deserves to be 88.

I will slot it into the queue. But can already leave the review now: Perfection.

Mandy (2018)
I really enjoyed it. On the face of it, Mandy is a genre flick that turns everything up to 11 and nails every component of a revenge movie. The trick to revenge movies is weaving together interesting characters and the film knocks it out of the park with Jeremiah Sands and his crazy cult of worshipers and demon bikers. They're depraved and evil mothers, but they have their own belief system which is fascinating and the film excels at sucking the audience into their world.
Nic Cage is great and no other character in 2018 has suffered as much as him. He's clearly been through a fair bit since the start of the movie, but has found peace with his beloved Mandy. Mandy is this scarred book-ish type who largely keeps to herself but has found her soul mate and appears content with her life. Then all of it is snatched away in the most inhumane way possible, leading to the second half of the movie. What I like about Cage's performance is that while he goes to some extreme places, it's still very human. Cage gets his ass handed to him heaps, and he doesn't just get back up, you feel every struggle, you feel the nail in the hand, or the knife through the ribs as well as the adrenaline that pumps through his veins as he takes down these motherfuckers one by one.
The movie isn't all straight forward either. There's some fun side characters that pop up to assist Cage in his redemption that add to the overall arc. The chemist in particular had a very David Lynch type of quality to him, which as a fan of his work, made the movie more than a by the numbers revenge movie. The movie is constantly bathed in colour and Johansson's score plays a prominent part through out which gives it a very dreamy feel.
I don't see this as being the best movie of 2018, but it will certainly remain in my Top 10 and possibly Top 5. Right now, it's the best movie I've seen of this year.

Crazy Rich Asians, a romantic comedy that everyone told me I had to go see because I'm Asian and it's the first Asian-American movie of our generation.
Which I guess it is, but isn't setting out to be Black Panther for Asian people and is really all the better for it; it's a fun fish-out-of-water flick about a middle class girl from New York going to Signapore to meet her boyfriend's family -- unbeknownst to her, they're one of the most obscenely rich and well-known socialite families in the country (think Hilton-level rich and famous).
My biggest concern about writing anything about/can I recommend the movie is, is it accessible? And I absolutely believe it is. It takes the tried and true romantic comedy formula and adds a little bit of Asian flavor to the outside, but the usual story beats and character motivations are universal. Kind of like a Japanese hot dog with wasabi mayo and seaweed as toppings, it may look weird and out there but when you take that first bite at its core it's unmistakably still a hot dog. Just tastes a teensy bit different.
(Side note: If you've never had one, they're AMAZING.)
I didn't expect the movie to hit as close to home as it did: there's the fish-out-of-water element of the lead character being middle class thrown into an insanely rich social circle (we rented an island for a bachelorette party, as you do), but there's another fish out of water plot of the Chinese-American vs Chinese-in-Asia experience that I can't get into without spoilers, but it hit me right in the feels.
Most of the talk I see about the movie is about Hollywood representation, whitewashing and racial politics and being a seminal moment in American Asian history which is all very important, but not enough about whether the movie itself is any good and to me it is, and if you're into the romcom genre then it absolutely is worth seeing.

Just watched Scott Pilgrim.
Not bad. Enjoyed everyone's individual performances and the audio/visual presentation more than the story itself.
Overall it was different and fun, and I can totally understand how this appeals to the demographic it's supposed to appeal to.

Scott Pilgrim would be right up there as far as Gen Y movies go.
It's just a shame they made it a Michael Cera movie. It took it from a 7/10 movie to a Guilty Pleasure.

Watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on the orders from 🤯 , and I liked it. Not sure I like it as much as 🤯 does but he has a history with the movie so that can be expected. I have some gripes with the movie that sort of took me out of it from time to time but overall it's a great trio of performances from the main three characters (especially Kilmer) and enjoyable enough that I'll probably go back and watch it again. I'll probably wait until it shows up on a countdown to go even further into detail but yeah , not mad at cha 🤯.

I'll settle for this reaction, and totally understand that I might have higher regard that others for various whatever other reasons. I still agree that Kilmer was the best part. I was somewhat hoping this performance would revitalize his career in a transformed way, kinda sending him the Alec Baldwin direction of former heart throb turned heavier set surprisingly funny guy. Also, I think cultural context is key too. At this point, RDJ has been around so long that it's probably quite fair to be tired of him. Back when KKBB hit theatres though, it was still like very early on in his career's resuscitation. So his performance felt more novel and fun. Little did we know at the time that it would become essentially his blueprint for every movie thereafter (minus Tropic Thunder).

Finally watched the 1992 HBO original Charlie Sheen movie Beyond The Law, about under cover cop going into motorcycle gang. I remember seeing it on USA in the late 90s. Found it in multi-dvd pack with some other garbage, i picked it up for $1 a while back and threw it on my shelf and forgot about it.
Its surprisingly decent. Actually pretty good, especially considering it was an HBO movie and not even a theatrical release, id go 3 Stars or 7/10 Also has Michael Madsen from Reservoir Dogs. Definitely a lot of the blood\tits\language were edited out of the USA version so this is probably first time seeing the uncut version.

It Follows Horror movie from 2014. Amazing. It has a fantastic premise, simple yet very creepy, and it fleshes it out extremely well. Great pacing, solid acting, a constant tense atmosphere and some really scary moments. The ending was a little on the goofy side, but not enough to spoil the film. We're just entering October. If you want a recent horror movie to watch in Halloween month, look no further than It Follows.

I watched Misery last night for the first time since I seen it in theaters with my parents when I was like 4 or 5. This was fucking phenomenal all the way around, story, acting, directing, everything. I bet this was a really good book that you just could not put down, I had to get up at 4:30 this morning for work but just could not turn the movie off or go to sleep until it was over so I stayed up later than I should have because of this. I'd give this a 9/10 if not more. I know ya'll don't watch old movies but if you have never seen this I would recommend checking it out.

Venom
I enjoyed it, pretty funny film.
I don’t read the comics, so I’m guessing Venom is meant to be way more serious hence the poor reception?

Gotta be honest... all the previews made it already seem super serious. Nice there's humor. I ways thought the biggest issues was Sony being Sony and doing it without Spidey.

Watched A Wrinkle in Time last night with Wife. It was cute and fine, but not worth a rewatch IMO. I think Wife liked it though, and even boohooed at various parts. She'd read the book a long time ago but couldn't remember it. I've never read the book. Not sure how much that matters or how true to the source material the movie was. Felt like it was trying to force across a bunch of social messages to me, but at least they were generally positive messages.

If you have Vudu they have a bunch of great old horror movies to watch for free, with ads but there are only a few ad interruptions(less than commercials on TV). They have Highway To Hell on there, cult classic straight to VHS movie that is fucking way over the top:
I plan on watching that sometime soon as I can get the time. I rented that back in 1999 in a small town in the middle of nowhere Texas back then, I remember really liking it. Haven't seen it since then, I believe it was just only recently released on Blu Ray/DVD.
On Vudu last night I found and watched Mans Best Friend from 1993. Crazy to think this movie is 25 years old now. I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. It's like a sci-fi horror type of movie I guess, but it tries to be campy and funny at times. It's about a killer dog that was scientifically engineered to be like the perfect weapon, it has Lance Henrickson and it was directed by the same person who directed Childs Play 2. I had been looking for this movie for a while whenever I'm out shopping for movies at some of the shops I go to but I could never find it.
Watching it last night I didn't enjoy it as much as I did when I was a wee lad, it's ok I guess, definitely gets the nostalgia going but just not that good of a movie really. I laughed at that one scene that shows up in Friday where the old guy was watching it on TV with the dog going after the mail man. The nostalgia novelty wore off pretty quick with this one though and I was ready to watch something else about an hour into it, it's corny as fuck like borderline "so bad it's good" but just not quite there and just kinda meh.
