The sequel to Train to Busan. The original Train to Busan is what I legitimately believe to be the greatest zombie movie of all time - better than the original Night of the Living Dead. Train to Busan sequel you say? I absolutely have to watch that. I also couldn't agree more: greatest zombie film ever made in my opinion; Koreans kick all kinds of cinematic ass. Speaking of, I recently watched "#Alive". There were some cool scenes here and there but nothing groundbreaking. The end in particular was so trope-y that it sadly ruined most of the experience for me. That being said, it was still better than most if any zombie film the States have recently put out.

I couldn't imagine going into I'm Thinking Of Ending Things as a thriller, I knew it was Kaufman so I knew it was going to be a very wordy, weird, slice of life movie. Like Synecdoche, New York and Anomalise, I'm glad I just threw myself into the film knowing it was a Kaufman and had no expectations going in. I figured out pretty early what was going on, but found it was a really interesting way to unpack somebody's life, even a life so unfulfilled.
I read a lot of the reddit comments and while I can see where they're coming from I disagree with 90% of them. I wouldn't have changed a thing about the movie and I'm glad Kaufman was able to release his own version of the story and it really made an impression on me.
Also not going to lie, I may have developed a crush for Jessie Buckley.
Don't tell Shida!!

I finally got around to watching Tenet, Christopher Nolan's latest caper about a secret organization (called Tenet) who are investigating an arms dealer named Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh). Sator has developed weapons that can travel against the flow of time and as we learn more about this 'inversion' we learn that extends to people and they can also exist against the flow of time. The movie then becomes about shutting down Sator's operation before he decides to wipe out humanity.
It borrows a lot of elements from past Nolan films, namely Inception and The Dark Knight but it was nice to see Nolan work with new collaborators. Naturally Michael Caine makes an appearance but I believe Branagh maybe the only other alumni - Washington, Pattinson and Debecki are all fresh faces but seem to fit extremely well into his world. Nolan also has a different composer on board, ending his run of five films with Zimmer. Taking the helm this time is Ludwig Goransson who you may know from Black Panther and Apollo Creed. Goransson had an incredible challenge delivering the quality Zimmer has become known for and he did an excellent job delivering the most thrilling soundtrack you'll hear this year. I'd recommend just letting it play in the background, it's fantastic and drives the action more than any soundtrack I've heard.
I actually found it to be a pretty simple movie to follow along with, it's just so dense I'm finding it difficult to remember everything. It was like they took the Gordon-Levitt fight scene from Inception and made an entire movie based around that. Set piece after set piece of exhillerating action that's all so stylish and wonderfully choreographed.

"My Octopus Teacher" documentary. I swear it's not Japanese squid porn. In fact, it's the complete opposite and is extremely wholesome viewing material. 10/10 recommended.

Man on Fire UTMoney well spent. No regrets. Not great by any stretch, but not bad. Easy, enjoyable. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it was like John Wick meets Traffic or perhaps Sicario 2. Maybe with a dash of Chris Hemsworth's recent Extraction movie? Looking at IMDb, this seems to be when Denzel really started leveraging his Training Day momentum into a run of action movies like how Liam went all-in in the wake of Taken. Speaking of Taken, add that to the mix of previously named movies. Complaints include there really not feeling like there was any conflict once the revenge part of the story kicks into gear. Creasy has no problems finding and killing everyone. Even when he gets shot or leaves the hospital early, he never really exhibits any ill effects or setbacks. Also, did I miss them explaining the significance of the scars on his hand? But for what this movie is clearly meant to be, these are really minor complaints. I guess also the over-indulgent music video/shaky cam style Tony Scott seemed addicted to throughout? Anyway... In the pantheon of UT recs, I have MoF leaps and bounds ahead of the DotD remake but behind Warrior. Possibly on equal but different footing as Snowpiercer? I'm having trouble remembering other recs now too. Roadhouse has that epic cheese factor and has been growing on me since I finally saw it. In the Heat of the Night was really good too. And Popstar was epic. Trying to recall what else you've recommended that I've made good on watching... Miles better than Friday the 13th. Lionheart's Major Dundee rec was better. But no one tell Lionheart I said that. Anyway... Definitely not on Denzel's Mt. Rushmore, but good easy fun nonetheless.

The Proposal (2009) The Proposal popped up in a PW Countdown (Sandra Bullock movies?) some time ago, and for some reason it grabbed my interest. Now I have watched it. It's pretty good.
The plot is formulaic: a man and a woman who hate each other are forced to pretend to be a couple, and they fall in love. Great. Formulaic isn't always a problem if the characters, the scenes and the specific plot works out.
I really enjoyed the first 30 minutes, when they hated each other and constantly took jabs at each other while pretending to be in love for their audience. Bullock's and Reynolds' chemistry as reluctant lovers is great, and the jokes are funny. I really enjoyed the last 20 minutes, where the "big disaster" happens and is repaired about 10 minutes later. That was well done, albeit it was wrapped up a little too quickly. It features my favourite scene in the movie, which I'll cover later. The hour or so in between wasn't as good. This is the period where Bullock and Reynolds mellow out and grow to like one another. This phase of the movie wasn't particularly entertaining or funny. The gags fell flat and, weirdly, as their characters started to like one another, the chemistry of the actors faded away.
So it's a hit and miss film. The biggest hit was Betty White. I gather she is a legend in America, and judging by this performance, I can understand why. 87 years old at the time of filming and she steals every scene. Her final moment in the film is faking a heart attack in order to stop Reynolds' character and his father from constantly fighting. Her emotional speech, when she is pretending to be nearly dead, is tearjerking. An old lady faking her own death is normally no joking matter, but it is somehow delivered with incredible grace and everyone is smiling when the unrelentlessly charming Betty White reveals she was deceiving her family. I can't imagine that scene working with anyone else, quite frankly.
Betty White gets 10/10, the movie gets 5/10.

If 5/10 is a fail, what's the point of 1-4/10?
50% sounds about right to me. Parts were good, parts not so good, and it's not a movie I'd want to watch again.

Tropic Thunder
Awesome. Cruise has way too much of an appearance to be called a cameo, but he was easily the best part. Would've loved to seen more of him.

Maybe it's the Ohioan in me, but I usually translate "pretty good" to "meh, it was alright" most times and vice versa. I also think it depends on what you're expectation level is going into said film that also plays a big factor.

Warrior (2011) Much like The Proposal, the overall plot of Warrior is predictable. You can pretty much figure out what happens the moment you learn that two brothers are entering the same MMA tournament.
But that's not the point. The point is the journey, everything that happens in between. And the journey is incredible. The brothers are Tommy (Tom Hardy) and Brendan (Joel Edgerton). Their father is Paddy (Nick Nolte). Paddy was a drunken and abusive father. He beat his mother, who ran away and died of a terminal illness. Tommy ran away with his mother, to take care of her. Brendan stayed because he was in love with his future wife and did not want to leave her. Tommy has never forgiven his father, or his brother. Brendan seems to have separated himself well enough, living his own life, but of course the past still lives with him. At the start of the film, Paddy lives alone, nearing his 1000th day of sobriety.
Circumstances bring these three people back together. Tommy and Brendan independently enter the same MMA tournament for different reasons. Tommy recruits his father to be his trainer. He doesn't want his father back. He just wants a trainer he knows and trusts (so far as training goes). Tommy is like Brock Lesnar: he hates interacting with people, especially people he doesn't know, unless he absolutely has to.
The film is split into two acts. The first hour is character development, setting the scene. This is excellent. The second hour is the tournament itself. Normally the climax of a sports films only occupied the last 20 minutes or so, but this is much longer. Yet it works. One of the things I loved most about this film is how Tommy and Brendan's fighting styles mirror their personalities.
Tommy is a simple-minded brute. At times he doesn't seem fully human: the only thing that drives him is rage and resentment at his life circumstances. Not just related to his family, but something that happened in his military life. His fighting style is fast and brutal: quick and efficient knockouts. He wins most of his fights in seconds. Yet he does have feelings, he is human, and he communicates them well in his own way, thanks to great writing and an unbelievable performance by Tom Hardy.
Brendan is a survivor. He is incredibly resilient, and does what he can do survive. An inability to pay his mortgages leads him to make quick money by fighting, something he gave up years ago because of his wife's disapproval. He wins fights by surviving. He is often outclasses, takes a beating, doesn't quit, waits for his moment, and grabs a submission hold.
Naturally, the two brothers meet in the final. The unstoppable force Tommy vs the immovable object Brendan. The two had only interacted for about five minutes before this moment, yet everything that has happened set the scene perfectly and established their connection in great detail. The finale is amazing, and delivers on all the setup.
I could write several more paragraphs about this film, but I'll say two more things: Nick Nolte is incredible as the father who has made grave mistakes and wants to try and make amends in his later years. Kurt Angle is incredible as Koba, undefeated Russian fighting machine.
9/10.

Yes, but does Ultimate Warrior make at least a cameo. And does the final montage use Scandal's "Warrior"? The real questions. I don't see them mentioned in Emperor 's review.

Love that Emperor loved Warrior so much. It’s such a great movie deserving of all the praise it gets. It’s the pinnacle of sports movies IMO and perfected tbt formula that has been working for years with top notch writing and acting. Right people had it on their Top 100(me). Wrong people omitted it ( 🤯).
