Jack. Still hits. Dancing and shit. Can't believe Jlo took all the REDs and still friendzoned him.
Fran was SMOKING too.
I saw that movie when it came out and the whole weird semi-pedophilia angle was lost on me. I just remember being super jealous and wishing I looked older so I could fuck Fran Drescher in that skirt. But then I got older and now that movie is weird and gross. Fran Drescher isn’t but yeah.

Currently watching Jason Goes to Hell as I work on school work. I always forget about the connection to Youngstown in the movie. As a resident of Ytown, I can see how it is hell itself. I usually prefer the later entries in the Friday franchise, but this one is lower on my list.

Underrated indeed. Can't tell if that voice enhances or detracts. Honestly probably the former, as surprising as that is/was for me.

It's Complicated (2009)
Romantic comedy starring:
Meryl "Gets a Best Actress nomination for waking up in the morning" Streep Alec "Mama, just killed a man, put a trigger to his head..." Baldwin (too soon?) Steve "Funny American guy" Martin John "I know who he is because I started watching The Office" Krasinski
Actually it's mainly the top three. Krasinki is the fourth name in the opening credits but he's barely in it. It's really a Streep/Baldwin/Martin vehicle.
The basic premise is that Streep and Baldwin were married, he cheated on her and married a younger lady. However they still have feeling and start hooking up. Meanwhile Martin is Streep's architect, they meet and also become romatically involved. Basically a love triangle. Not all that complicated.
The first hour or so is fairly inoffensive. I laughed maybe once but it's not a laugh-out-loud kinda script, it's just pleasant easy watching. Streep received 5 Best Actress nominations in this hour. The highlight is around midway through the film. They all attend a party for Streep/Baldwin's children (by the way Krasinski is their son-in-law). Streep and Martin go as a date, they get stoned on a joint Baldwin gave her, and hilarity ensues. This is also the first scene where all four characters (the main three and Baldwin's younger lady wife) are in the same room. There's an awesome montage to "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" by The Beach Boys which displays Streep dancing romantically first with Baldwin - to the disgust of Baldwin's wife - then moving onto Martin - much to the shock of Baldwin. Not normally into these schmaltzy song and dance scenes but that was really well done.
It all ends in a quite charming and mature way. Predictable, but not unrealistic given the personalities involved.
I may speak comically about Streep's acting accolades but she is really good in this movie. In particular the transition from lonely, tragic middle-aged female figure to a lady who is joyful and full-of-life is wonderful. She has fantastic chemistry with the two main leads, who are great in their own right.
Quite a nice film, although this genre as a whole is not my cup of tea, so my reaction is probably about As Good As It Gets. Which, incidentally, is another rom-com of this mould that I don't like very much.
Meryl Streep only won two Oscars for this movie.

The Matrix Regurgitation.
Meh, an absolute meh. It started off well and good, and then it lost me 3/4 the way through it and I feel asleep to the sound of Keanu's wooden acting.

Burning (2018; Lee Chang-dong)I finally got around to watching this. Before Parasite swept the world and reminded everyone that Korean cinema was good, Burning was the go-to film. While it doesn't have the genre shifting tone that Parasite had that made it such an enigma, Burning is one of the more effective slow-burn movies that goes from 0-100 really quickly before it just ends...
However it's a movie brimming with social commentary that largely speaks to the Korean community and offers some decent insight into their culture. This anger about their culture slowly being gentrified to be more globally accepted and this desire to find one's place in the world or find their voice/story.
Burning tells you upfront that it's a thriller. So if you're anything like me, you're playing Sherlock Holmes trying to figure out exactly what the twist is. I guessed from the opening minute when the main character runs into his old childhood friend he was being Matchstick Man'd...
...and it was at this point I realised that Matchstick Men ruined every thriller. In fact, Matchstick Men may have ruined my life as I think in some way I'm getting swindled by people pretending to be someone else in some elaborate heist.
With that said! I'd be shocked if the Good Doctor has not seen this movie and I'd thoroughly recommend it to him. As for the rest of you, if you enjoyed Parasite and wanted more, I'd recommend checking it out as they have a lot in common. Take my approach and see how accurate the Matchstick Men prediction is, the results may shock and arouse you.
I am curious though...
Have thrillers like the Sixth Sense, Fight Club, Matchstick Men etc. ruined the genre for you? Do you often find yourself calling the finish before it happens and being disappointed or surprised? Also any thriller recommendations?

Why watch Highlander when I could have a much better time reading about Baker and Shinobi watching Highlander?
I never understood second hand entertainment until they showed me the way.

Big Pete, shockingly I've never heard of this Burning film. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Definitely need to check it out. I always thought the go-to Korean film prior to parasite was Oldboy. Matchstick Men is also long overdue a rewatch. If it's not in my Top 10, it's Top 20 for sure. For what it's worth, I think you might low key be one of the top 3 funniest posters on PW. Even if that was genuine Meryl love. (-_-) Thank you! Nice to know my weird humour is appreciated  I like Meryl Streep but I find she is overrated, although every time I watch a Streep movie I start to believe more that she's just as good as everyone says she is. Still think she's kinda lousy in Adaptation but she's phenomenal in most other Streep movies I've seen. Speaking of which, The Devil Wears Prada. Need to check that one too.

I highly recommend that one as well. Despite seeing and loving Adaptation first, Devil is where I absolutely got on board the Meryl hype train. My favorite performance of hers. Perhaps a Top 10 personal favorite female actor performance... If not, performance regardless of sex/gender. She's great in that. As is the supporting cast. Stanley Tucci... Always my man!

Definitely need to check it out. I always thought the go-to Korean film prior to parasite was Oldboy. This is correct, but cinephiles had been so desperate to recommend something else since 2006's The Host they were in raptures when this movie was released. I believe I was too busy watching 80s Japanese movies to immerse myself in Shenmue's world to pay attention.

Ticket to Paradise: it’s a serviceable rom-com, anyone that is encouraged to go to Bali just from seeing this film will be in for a rude awakening though. Fall: Very similar to 47 Metres Down (610 metres up?), does a fantastic job of selling how high up and dangerous the tower is and the two leads carry the film well. Bonus points for the WWE reference. If you have a phobia of heights this will probably serve its purpose more for you. Bodies Bodies Bodies: A great commentary on the information age and how insufferable most of gen z can be, similar to Scream (2022) but without the meta humour. Definitely an acquired taste and if you go into this having certain expectations you probably won’t like it. It had Pete Davidson and discussions about the stresses of running a podcast, maybe 🤯 will love it. All 3 films pass the bechdel test, rare that happens in a random combo of movies.
