I found out today that I have been using a saying completely wrong and indeed our whole division seems to use it incorrectly.
For instance, you would ask me 'are you busy?' And I would reply, 'balls to the wall' to indicate that I am stupid busy. The woman I share an office with is from Jamaica and has never heard this saying so she asked what it meant thinking it had something to do with testicles.
Curious, I looked it up and found out the meaning behind it is quite benign. It refers to fighter pilots pressing the throttle (ball) down to the panel (wall) when they accelerate quickly so really it has little to do with being busy and more to do with speed. I have been using this saying incorrectly for YEARS!!!
Is there something you recently realized you were using wrong or doing wrong?

Not a saying, but at work the new cocktails instruction state “muddle ingredients” so I stirred them and it came out nothing like pictured. They meant crush and tried to argue that muddle means crush.
Muddle 5. to mix or stir (a cocktail, chocolate, etc.)
Also I thought for an embarrassingly long time it was “in sickness and in hell” not health meaning the really bad times in a relationship 😂😔

I was pretty blown away when I found out that it was milquetoast and not milk toast.

For years I used the word 'effervescent' when I meant 'aromatic'. I think I was trying to use a big word to make myself sound more 'photosynthesis'.

In college I felt very vindicated to discover that "orientated" was just as correct and valid as "oriented" when I'd said the former and been accused of being an idiot for not using the latter.

I spelled 'separate' as 'seperate' until about two years ago.

The word "forte," this is something that has practically become correct because so many people use it wrong, but it's still actually incorrect, as I learned from George Carlin. If you're talking about something you excel at it's prounounced FORT, the musical term is pronounced FOUR-TAY.
