Shocking news today.
Tom Petty passed away today at age 66. Authorities found Petty earlier today in cardiac arrest. And all efforts to save him went nowhere.
Petty as leader of the Heartbreakers, a member of the Travelling Wilburys, and as a solo artist, had amassed a great discography of hits. Among them...
American Girl Breakdown I Need To Know Here Comes My Girl Don't Do Me Like That Refugee The Waiting Stop Dragging My Heart Around (with Stevie Nicks) You Got Lucky Don't Come Around Here No More Handle With Care End of the Line Freefalling Running Down A Dream I Won't Back Down Learning To Fly Mary Jane's Last Dance The Last DJ
One of the hardest working people in music, and one of the most respected. He will be missed.

Looks like CBS has misreported his death. As of now, he is still clinging on for the time being. It's hard to get your hopes in regard to this because Carrie Fisher absolutely destroyed me last years after having an ounce of hope she would recover.

I'm with Raven as far as fledgling hope.
I love Petty and always thought he was a bit overlooked in Rock lore , but maybe I just don't run in the right circles. Either way Free Falling is one of the ultimate sing-a-long songs of all time. Personally speaking I Won't Back Down is probably in my top 15-20 favorite songs ever.
Sad day for Rock N' Roll.

Last Dance is probably my favorite Petty song. Gonna listen to a bunch now, although I'm sure it's likely going to be bad news. Flair survived, so I doubt we get two in a row.

I went through a brief Tom Petty phase in the late 90's but soon found him to be way overplayed. After getting satellite radio it just exasperated the problem (guaranteed 3 songs an hour between three channels in my rotation, his own "Buried Treasure" show and eventually his own channel) and I drifted further away from listening to his music. That being said I always respected his "fight the man" approach and work ethic. Songs like American Girl, Woman In Love, You Got Lucky, Don't Come Around Here No More, I Need To Know are songs that I can still play and have a smile on my face. To think he touched millions of fans like that is a credit to how quality of a songwriter he was and reminds me of how special a talent we lost.
RIP Charlie T. Wilbury, enjoy that "Great Wide Open."

Petty is easily my favorite of the southern rockers. Sure he is overplayed, but he also has a ton of stuff during his Heartbreaker days that got almost no play at all. Petty will soon reach a higher level of success as people start doing covers as tributes. His music is so easy to adapt to other styles.
