So @admin started a similar thread, for new music releases in 2022, it was a pretty successful thread, so I figured why not get one put up for 2023 as well. I’m not sure what’s all releasing so far this year (as of this post), but I know both Shania Twain and Tyler Hubbard (of Florida Georgia Line fame) have albums releasing this year and I'm excited for both. As for January, Hardy is releasing "The Mockingbird & The Crow" on the 20th, featuring the hit song Wait in the Truck.

The first couple of months in hip hop look extremely lean (although De La Soul's catalogue is finally hitting streaming in March). Glass half full side means there's plenty of time to go back and listen to stuff from AOTY lists that I missed. A friend of mine always sends me a stream of WhatsApp messages of his favourite albums connected with his personal year in review. He likes the DIY singer songwriter women a lot more than I do, so yesterday I listened to Julia Jacklin, today it's Weyes Blood.

I'm sure there will be tons of synthwave coming out in 2023, felt like the genre was really great in 2022.
My other fav genres like Metalcore remains to be seen. Just looking at a random list of Q1 2023 albums, the new Gorillaz album might be the lone thing of interest. They are very hit or miss but I just hope for tons of funk by em if I can get it.

Just insane, can't believe this is all happening under 3 minutes.
This is ex Crystal Lake's lead singer Ryo Kinoshita's side project since he left the band last year due to mental health. Hope he left on good terms because him with that band were amazing as far as Metalcore goes. This song is just insane though. Wish it was longer though, so wish it was longer. Wonder if this becomes an actual album.

Was more into Christian Rock maybe over a decade ago but I will come back to this genre on & off. Particularly, TFK/Thousand Foot Krutch are my jam but they haven't put out anything in a long time(I hope they do though) but Disciple has been on & off with me. So seeing this come up on my Youtube searches, this song is pretty good. It's more of the same that I expect out of this band but altogether but this is just intense all the way through.

I've tried to avoid listening to too many of the tracks (only New Gold prior to this one) because they have released half the tracklists now and I'm an old head who won't let go of the album format - but I really like both and the direction they are going in. Damon Albarn has to be one of the most impressive (and underrated!) figures in music, the way he's managed to stay relevant and fresh 30 years in the game is so impressive. Fav Gorillaz song Blindy?

Lets goooo
So one of my favorite albums of the 00's, Thrice's "The Artist in the Ambulance" dropped a revisit nearly 20 years after with some nice surprises. It's basically present day Dustin Kensrue/lead singer of the band taking on this album that was heavy alt. rock before they began to branch out to do some more experimental rock. This and Vheissu still are their best works IMHO.
(Lead singer of Architects guest appears on this track, they have a great cover of Thrice's 'Of Dust & Nations" off their followup album, Vheissu.
(My personal favorite off this album off original release, such a banger. Story of Icarus in mythology trying to reach the sun/great unknown despite knowing the peril that lies ahead with the 'limited' resources that led to his death.)
So far, really loving this. It incorporates current Thrice which sounds more bluesy with their post-hardcore early days which this album features. God this album was/is so fucking good man, just looking at the tracks of all the songs, just banger after banger.

I finally got around to listening to Hardy's newest album (The Mockingbird & the Crow), a decent blend of country (tracks one through eight) and rock (tracks ten through seventeen). Shania Twain's newest album also dropped earlier today, there were a couple of songs I liked but most of it was eh. I should have listened to the clean version of the Queen of Me (the album, not the song of the same name), as I was not prepared for Shania dropping f-bombs.

Listened to the new 2023 Monkey Majik(JPOP group)'s album "Curtain Call", it's top heavy where the 1st half of the album is terrific and has the funky, upbeat pop music that I always have loved by them. 2nd half for the most part sadly also features their soft ballads which I guess appeals to plenty but not necessarily for me.
I've posted in the past about these guys I think in the "What Are You Listening To" mega thread, they have put out some insanely catchy music and I have been a fan for years. Found them from their cover of the (you guessed it) Monkey Magic cover from like 10 years ago and stood for their cover of stuff like Lupin the 3rd cover. Think one of their newest singles caught fire from this "Arknights" game that seems like a Genshin Impact clone so you know there's a heavy cult following which is cool.
Was letdown by how many softer songs were on the 2nd half of this album because 5-7 tracks in, I was really thinking this was going to be a magnificent listen from start to finish but alas. I like ballads and softer tone songs but there's just too much of it in the 2nd half of this album, I can get by 2-3 of them in an album but I get it, the target audience likes it and they have done this for years. Still a solid album all things considered, happy to see the group still doing their things so many years later.
I am far from a JPOP fan but these guys I will always take time to listen to whatever they put out.

So I gave Pink's newest album (Trustfall, released February 17th) a listen. It's some decent stuff with my favorite song being the last on the album (Just say I'm sorry) featuring Chris Stapleton.

Leaked a few hours sooner than it will be released.
Feeling the 1st half of this album but this Bad Bunny guest track feels so out of place, guess this hits the spot for fans of this type of music but this does nothing. Feels so out of place on this album.

It's a fun upbeat indie pop type album that would have fit in really well with the trends of about a decade ago! There are some enjoyable songs but it's very unadventurous so isn't something I'll probably come back to much. The Bad Bunny song does stick out like a sore thumb but that's really only because they don't have any other hip hop features which was probably a bit of an error.

Honestly one of the most amazing festival lineups I have ever seen. They've taken a time machine back to the late 90s/early 00s. If you grew up listening to pop punk and alternative rock, pretty much every big band of that era is playing in one festival. It's unreal.

Doom Flamingo released a real fun album few week ago, found this band last year and have always been consistent plays. Just a fun group, the female vocals are just so friggin' smooth with some synthwave or lo-fi music, which I am always a sucker for. Had a lot of fun listening to the album at work today.

My girl Hirie has evolved completely away from the kind of music I like, their album that came out last year I just could not get into at all. I got a new girl now Mrs. Analea Brown
Lovely new song much more my style of music and damn she's got a voice. I first heard about her because she was on the lineup for the festival in Long Beach I went to in 2020(though I did not get to see her set). I really dig how the Hawaii/Pacific Islands have their own spin on reggae music. If I'm not mistaken it is like an 11 hour flight to that part of the world from anywhere else so they really have their own thing going on with the music over there with reggae style being a much bigger deal. At the festival I went to there was a lot of people that traveled from there throwing down, they stacked the main stage with those bands, J Boog, Sammy Johnson, Common Kings, a few others and it was a vibe.

I still liked bits and portions of the Hirie album last year, but I agree it's def. a different feel, very pop-ish which is a far cry from the reggae blend she was doing.
Listened to the new Haken album that came out on Friday, solid.....pretty solid. Couple of songs stood out to me like 'Alphabet of Me' which I listed in last year's thread and 'Taurus' which is very good but I did just 1 listen to the album. It's about what you'd expect from this band.

This is really good! Feels so New Order esque, finding out just now there's a new Depeche Mode album coming in a few weeks is an awesome surprise. Really like so much of their work, sort of came onto them late, but always when in the right mood, they are fantastic. If this new album is more 1980's New Wave, count me in. I know this song or album might be more of tribute to one of the founding members passing away last year, Andy Fletcher but this is pretty good.

I'm really enjoying the new Paramore stuff. They're one of those bands that never truly gets a whole lot of exposure commercially here in Oz since Channel V ceased to exist, and Triple J radio became the exclusively bands from Perth, WA.
I can't put my finger on where I've heard this song before, or where they've drawn influence from with 'Running out of Time' but it sounds very familiar.

I haven't listened to the entire album but Bury Tomorrow's new tracks were surprisingly solid. I still miss the old vocals and I actually think the singles that came out were mediocre at best but the other tracks upon listening thus far? Pretty good.
The next album I am looking out for comes out next Friday with Enter Shikari's new album. Some of the singles have been hits, others ehh. This one could go either way too.
May is when the new Sleep Token album drops which I am absolutely all in for, everything they put out for this album has been fantastic.

This was another unexpected drop. Was kind of hoping it'd grip me on 1st listen like the last 3 singles ended up doing. I will say this album is going be a blend of uniqueness, all of these songs just so different.
Not sure I like this one as much as the others. DEFINTELY for the female audience.

Man, I’ve been slacking when it comes to listening to new album releases, especially compared to this time last year. I ended up listening to a total of 118 albums that were released in 2022, this year, however, I have only made my way through five albums. The last album I listened to, was actually released today, that of course being Bebe from Bebe Rexha. I’m a big fan of hers and this album didn’t disappoint, some interesting features with Snoop Dogg (Satellite), and Dolly Parton (Seasons) as well. 2023 Albums PlayedBebe Rexha - Bebe Hardy - The Mockingbird & The Crow Luke Combs - Gettin’ Old Pink - Trustfall Shania Twain - Queen of Me

Was heavily sleeping on the new Periphery album, holy cow there are some absolute hidden nuggets of gold on this. I wish whoever picked out the singles picked these couple of tracks, they are fantastic(Especially 'Molten Wax'). I almost feel like some of their tracks get too experimental/Djent for their own good where there's moments of brilliance only to be outdone by something thrown in for the sake of being different. I didn't get drawn on the Final Fantasy("Thanks Nobuo") or Hades("Zagreus") tribute songs which sucks as I love/like both game series but these songs are really good.
(Been a nonstop play, best thing on this album)
Even "Wildfire" has moments of being fantastic and catchy in it but it falls into the wormhole of being funky and trying to throw in jazz solos for the sake of.

On 2nd listen this album is a banger by Periphery, again even if they try to do things so differently, I appreciate just how crazy they get with how different their tracks sound. Like their other stuff, it's polarizing for sure but when it hits, it really hits. The aforementioned 'Wax Wings' is just a vocal showcase of epic proportions, it's insane the shit Spencer Sotolo is poppin' on this one.
Next Friday is the Sleep Token album drop which has a shot to be really good. Would be really letdown if I am not digging at least 75-80% of the album TBH.
The new Enter Shikari was ehh, shocked the album didn't have any of the collabs they had as singles. Couple of tracks that aren't bad here and there but wanted more.

The much anticipated Sleep Token 'Take Me Back to Eden' finally dropped. I already posted like almost half of the tracks already so it isn't a massive surprise but hearing it all in order puts everything in perspective. (I won't post up videos for stuff I already posted) 'Chokehold' is a good choice as an opener. It pretty much gives you the indication on some of the themes & music styles that will happen on this album. Want to say this was either the 1st or 2nd track off this album that was announced to everyone. The build followed by slow progression throughout the track are terrific. 'The Summoning' took me a couple times to really get into, it was the other track alongside the aforementioned 'Chokehold' that was introduced. Where this song really shines is the jazzy/raspy final 1/3 of the song, the first 2/3's are fine but this songs takes an unexpected turn. Sorta sounds like something Hozier would have done. 'Granite' was the 1st track I heard off this album after I sort of slept(no pun intended) through, not knowing about the 1st two tracks. It's such a low key banger and it is a pure far cry from some of their heavier stuff done prior and I actually like that. The versatility of this group is insane. It still has some heavier breakdowns here and there but it keeps a very easy to listen to low tone throughout. Super chill song. Speaking of low key, 'Aqua Regia' still stands as my favorite track of the album 4 songs in and it's going to be tough to top it. It's a song that won't be for everyone admittedly but I enjoy the change of pace. This has piano playing, a uptick a little less than the middle of the way through and a lovely mid-chorus vocal performance by the man known as 'Vessel' who no one knows who it truly is behind the mask. Easy track to listen to and to come back to, this was the song that really solidified the versatility that this group shows. The low key, slow pace ends with 'Vore' which I posted recently about about a month ago. Very Deftones like, pretty much heavy all the way through with glimpses of slow pace riddled in. Banger of a track, when it's a song about an obsession of devouring your lover whole, you gotta bring the heavy. Finally a new song that I haven't heard as all 6 of the previous tracks were released month(s) prior to the album release. 'Ascensionism' starts off very tender & slow. Got the piano going, it sort of goes unexpectedly to some modern day pop-rap(Not a fan of this stuff in general) before rounding itself over to a really nice blend of the poppy vocals and quicker to heavier toned music. The ending hits sort of hard, just a magnificent track off 1st listen. All over the place but in a good way. Ran into my 1st song of the album that didn't resonate with me, 'Are You Really Okay?' sounds like an 1980's pop rock track without the catchiness. Just came and go, not really appealed by it. Understandable to have a cooling off track after how hard this album was going off the top. Track just doesn't do anything different which if you like this sort of music, you might like it but it does nothing for me. Ah well. We get back to the good times with 'The Apparition' which keeps sort of triggers the melodic goodness that I am a sucker for. On 1st listen alone, this track is just superb. Catchy chorus and goes at that sort of uptempo that just flows & meshes really well. 'DYWTYLM' sort of grew on me. Not my favorite on this album, probably far from it but it's def. a track that needs a bunch of listens to get it. It's such a different track from what has been on the album, it's again very poppy and it doesn't go above & beyond but the simplicity is what does it for me. It's solid and it's evolved from being a 'SKIP' to something that I can listen and sort of appreciate it for. 'Rain' picks up early man, this tracks is another dub for Sleep Token. This is more of the same of the previous tracks which as you can tell, is certainly not a bad thing. 'Take Me Back to Eden' sort of epitomizes the entire Sleep Token album as a whole. It just goes to places and does it so damn well that I think this might be a track that is good for me 1st listen but may grow on me. The ending heavies cap off what is a really delicate & (somewhat) ambitious song. 'Euclid' sort of shows you glimpses of a very good track and sort of draw parallels to 'DYWTYLM' but it's a respectable enough final song on what was is a superb album pretty much. The good is typically good but it also sort of drags itself here and there. OVERALL: A really top notch album with very few blemishes if at all. This album lived up to the lofty expectations that so many people, myself included, had. I can see myself even liking it more upon 2nd and 3rd listens(Which I am doing as I am writing this up). Just really good stuff and it's going to be even better if you didn't play the shit out of the repeat button for almost half the tracks on this album.

I think I've got my song of the year, I'm just obsessed with this new track by Arlo Parks. It's the perfect blend of Gen Z sad girl indie pop and 90s indie shoegaze like Yo La Tengo and My Bloody Valentine.
