I know this was pretty popular on PW, when the game first came out, but does anyone still play Pokemon Go? If so what level are you? How many shinies do you have?
Over the last week, Niantic has added a couple of cool features including… adding friends, trading (within 100 meters), and the ability to send gifts (that could potentially have 7km eggs in them containing Alolan form Pokemon).
As for me, my friend code is 7640 9571 1134, if anyone wants to add me.
Also, the next community day event will star Squirtle, aka the best starter Pokemon in the games history. Speaking of community day, which Pokemon would you like to see be used in the future? Which has been your fave community day Pokemon so far?

I have fond memories of Pokemon Go but the novelty wore off pretty quickly, after which it wasn't worth all the hassle. My phone isn't very powerful and so didn't handle the game well. Plus I started to obsess over it. Every time I left the house, even a short car ride, I turned it on.
The game would have been much more engaging and longer-lasting had they implemented friends and trading from the get go. Without those things it's a pretty one dimensional game. I mean, it still is, but now there's an important social element. I have a couple of friends who still play the game, and now they have the benefit of friends to reward their dedication. As for me, I'm not going to return to it.

I stopped playing around the time they introduced the second generation, which sort of mirrored my original fandom when I dropped the anime & card game around the same time. There was rarely a moment where I found myself 'incidently' playing Pokemon Go. It either had to be the sole purpose of a social outing, or not at all and I just wasn't invested enough to keep going to the city and hanging around hot-spots, collecting all the Pokeballs I could get my hands on.
I'm more into the video games and with that said, I'm most likely going to give the Yellow remakes a miss and wait for 8th Gen.

Alright time to bump this thread... Since the September 18th community day for Oshawott I've been hooked on the game, even moreso than when the game first launched. Back in 2016, I was living in a rural suburb where the closest PokeStop was a kilometre away so I'd often run out of resources making the game a chore to play. Since moving I find myself in a really populated area filled with gyms and PokeStops - infact I have a Stop and a Gym that I can access from my backyard. I've been aware of these changes since moving here a couple of years back, so what's changed? Well during September I found myself going on a lot of long commutes stuck in traffic and after exhausting all my options I started booting up the app. It would only be for a few minutes, I'd do a couple of tasks that you get rewarded for doing each day and move on. Then that fateful Oshawott day happened where 100s were spawning and I could build up a decent roster of Oshawotts, including a few in shiny form. Now back when Go first began, it would have been collecting for collecting's sake. However now the games can be connected to the mainline entries, so I can add these shinies to Pokemon I've been collecting for nearly 20 years now. On top of that, the game does a much better job of hitting my dopamine levels than it did back in July-September of 2016. At the forefront is weekly events where select monsters spawn for a limited time. Since rejoining we've had...
Fashion Week Furfrou (the poodle) made it's debut and you could unlock multiple versions by collecting enough candy. Some forms were region exclusive which made them more desirable. On top of that exclusive event monsters included Butterfree, Kirlia, Croagunk, Blitzle and Shinx (via egg hatching). Then you also had Skitty, Glameow and Frillish spawning while Smoochum and both versions of Meowth were collectable via eggs that you would receive from trainer battles (PVE).
Secrets of the Jungle To celebrate the latest Pokemon movie, Niantic released an event that allowed you to collect the latest mythical Zarude. By completing a set-list of tasks, you could capture a mid-level Zarude for the game - the first time it was available in Go. The other exclusive Pokemon was that Pikachu you could see decked out in safari gear.
Spawns included: Drillbur, Roggenrola, Dwebble, Cottonee, Nuzleaf, Diglett, Cottonee, Pidove, Caterpie, Oddish & Hoothoot. Also by completing Field Research Tasks (objectives you receive from spinning PokeStops) you could collect Rowlett, Audino and Exeggcute.
Creepy Companions
Galarian Slowpoke (Psychic/Poison) made it's debut in Pokemon Go. By making Galarian Slowpoke your buddy and catching 30 Psychic types (or Poison types if you wanted Galarian Slowbro) you could evolve the new monster. There was actually a glitch that prevented the evolution from happening, so Niantic had to offer an easy mission to make the evolution process easier.
The event included a few more costumed monsters like Pikachu, Piplup and Drifblim.
Spawns were: Yamask, Gastly, Misdreavus, Shuppet, Gothita, Drowzee, Woobat, Stunky, Spinarak & Zubat. Meanwhile Chingling and Golett were available via exclusive eggs.
Ghoulish Pals
The second part of the Halloween event included the debuts of Pumpkaboo and Phantump. Mega Absol also made it's debut via raids where if you defeated it enough times to collect 200 Mega Energy, you could unlock it's limited evolution. The event also included double candy, making it easier to evolve Pokemon by either catching or by transferring.
Other spawns included: Litwick, Purrloin and Murkrow on top of a few ghosts types from the first week of the event (eg. Gastly, Yamask etc.)
Dia de Muertos 2021
A short two day event to celebrate the Mexican holiday. Trainers received free items and an easy objective where they had to catch 8 Pokemon to receive a free incense. The event also included Double Stardust which made powering up and trading Pokemon more obtainable.
Spawns included: Sableye, Cubone, Roselia, Yamask, Drifloon, Houndour, Murkrow, Sunkern and it's evolved form Sunflora as well as Alolan Marowak via incense.
Festival of Lights
This is coming out this Friday and marks the debut of Dedenne, the Pikachu clone.
Spawns include: Darumaka, Litwick, Magnemite, Fennekin, Tynamo, Electrike, Slugma, Whismur, Blitzle, Cottonee & Pikachu. On top of that there's egg spawns which include Vulpix, Alolan Geodude, Chinchou, Pichu, Magby, Elekid and Budew.
We haven't received the details just yet but on November 16th we'll receive an event for the release of Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl. Then to close out the month The Season of Mischief event which has been the Autumn/Spring event will conclude with a 3 day event.
My hopes for BD/SP are Gible, Cranidos & Riolu spawns. I expect it to be the Sinnoh Starters, Bidoof, Starly, Shinx, Shellos, Buizel, Aipom, Murkrow & Croagunk.
But that's not all, every month there's been a Community Day for several hours which includes all sorts of bonus'. The Oshawott day is what hooked me and since then we've had a Duskull Community Day and coming out for the BD/SP we're getting Shinx.
Then every Tuesday at 6:00pm there's Spotlight Hour where one monster will spawn en masse with bonus' like double candy, double exp, double stardust etc. Since playing we've had Skitty, Alolan Meowth, Drifloon, Gastly, Gothita, Murkrow and Cacnea. Coming up we've got Chinchou and the Sinnoh starters (Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup).
So what's the appeal? Well now there's a PVP element to the game that does a pretty good job of capturing the essence of a Pokemon game. 3 vs. 3, 2-3 attacks and it's all about team composition and knowing when to use your barrier and how to bait your opponent. There's also different leagues with different CP maximums so a lot more monsters are meta relevant. There's also a PVE element where you go on Raids against Mega Evolved or Legendary/Mythical. Unless you're in a group, they're hard to take down (unless you go * or *** star raids), so there's a few alternative apps you can use to invite players from around the world to take part. If you're free to play (like me) you get one free raid pass so usually to start my days off or later in the evening I get the chance to capture a legendary/mythical/mega or get some nice rewards.
With the field research missions (eg. throw two great curve ball throws for a guaranteed encounter) my dopamine levels have been going into overdrive and it's been preying on my fomo.
On top of that for me it's just a good excuse to get more fresh air, wake up earlier and explore the neighbourhood.
Are you still playing Lony ?

Big Pete, yeah I still play Pokemon Go pretty much every day, even if it's just the daily first spin/catch bonus, though I'll usually play on the bus ride to and from work. I'm looking forward to the Shinx community day event (November 21st), even though I already have a shiny Luxray, the fiancee and I usually compete against one another to see who gets the most shinnies. I'm not sure if we've exchanged friend codes or not, but if you want you can send me a friend request (my code is in the opening post).

The 3x transfer candy for the Shinx Community day is also too good to refuse, it's why I'm going to upgrade my storage with my next lot of free Pokecoins. Especially if I can grind up some more starter research quests since I'm still missing the vast majority of third evolutions.
I've largely ignored shinies, I did try and snag a shiny Cubone since they're one of my OG favourites but no dice. Alolan Marowak tore up the Halloween League though, I only loss one game and it was such a good match I couldn't even be mad.

Maybe I'll just unfriend this dude and go ham on that date and try and evolve someone else. I have 23 shinies with my coolest being Dragonite, Wigglytuff, Altaria, Aerodactyl and Ditto.

As for shinies, I'm currently sitting at 128 in total (would be higher, but I've transferred a few to the Switch games). My favorite shinies that I have are Charizard, Jolteon (also my fave Eeveelution), Zapdos, Weavile and Azelf.

I don't spoof, it was tempting for a while, but thankfully they released all the Gen 1 regional Pokemon worldwide (during an event), so I was able to get them that way. I'm hoping they'll eventually do it with the other regional Pokemon at some point as well.
There's an app called Poke Raid, which is great when you want to use your remote raid passes for international raids. It allows you to join a chat room and exchange friend codes for those raids.

I considered spoofing when the game first launched and I was on a poor data plan with limited time. I just wanted to use it so I could explore my suburbs at night and get a better lay of the land but after I heard the means to go about it it wasn't worth it.
I also haven't spent a cent playing the game.
I don't have too many shinies outside of a couple event ones (eg. Celebi) I have:
Oshawott (x5) Misdreavus (x2) Kangashan Duskull Murkrow

You can add Goldeen to the shiny collection.
Hate to admit it, but I've only just started using the fast catch method which makes things so much easier. Now all I need to do is master consistent great throws and I'll be mastering this game in no time.
Also caught my first hundo today a 1200+ Krabby which normally I'd be miffed about but Krabby is meta relevant so I'm stoked.
Really looking forward to Festival of Lights. I'm holding off on gifts until the event starts at 10am AEST and then I'll be going ham. If I spam you with 2 Lightning Strikes just recognise I'm being lazy.
I'll be looking to farm Darumaka, Magnemites, Fennekins, Tynamos and a few others I'll need for evolutions.
Also dataminers have found the BD/SP event will have two costume variations of the Sinnoh starters. There is also a Shadow version of Lugia which maybe tied to Team Rocket either this event or when Giovanni is slated to return in December.

You guys are tempting me to fire up the app again.
I played Pokemon Go in the first six months after its release. It was pretty fun but I got bored with the monotonous gameplay and the glitchy gym battles. Also I was unemployed so I had a lot of time to wander around my city. Now, not so much, so I'm not sure how much I'd be realistically using it.
I assume it has changed a lot since then? More features etc?
Are Pokemon still region-locked? That's a pet peeve of mine, the inability to get everything because of factors outside your control, but a staple of the Pokemon series. Can you trade with friends?

That's a pet peeve of mine, the inability to get everything because of factors outside your control, but a staple of the Pokemon series. Can you trade with friends? Region locks still exist but as Lony alluded to there are events that grant players access to them. They can also pop up in raids so players from that country can invite you to them via third party apps like PokeRaid or PokeBattler.
I'd say the biggest change is that every day there's something to look forward to. Whether it's having to spend your free local raid pass, doing your one free achievement, keeping up your streak of spinning Pokestops/catching Pokemon. The game does a pretty good job of catching players up as well.
Plenty of new features PVE (Raid Battles, Team Rocket Battles, Trainer Battles etc.)
PVP (Where you face other players from around the world) Improved IV system so you know which Pokemon are worth keeping.
Field Research/Special Research (they either give you items, exp or access to limited Pokemon) Buddy System Friends Gifts system (send other players post-cards from pokestops you visited and receive free items/exp) Trading (you'll want to keep your 2016 Pokemon since they're guaranteed to be 'lucky' trades)
For me it's just a good excuse to go for a walk and a 30 minute session can result in a ton of catches/pokestop spins. I like to sort through my field researches so I can get ones with worthwhile rewards. While there's incentives to tune in every day, usually tuning in once a month for community days or two weeks for new events can be enough.
When I quit around 2016, I found the app didn't entice me to play enough. I was just constantly coming across garbage monsters and the spawns weren't varied enough. Now events take place so often, you're guaranteed to come across at least one creature you haven't seen in awhile. The connectivity to the modern games also helps a lot, so I know if I get spares, I can send them to the collection I've been building since 2003.

For future reference my trainer code is: 2276 1012 0799
You can add Pidgey to the shiny collection.
The first day of the Festival of Lights event is in the books in Australia and it was largely a productive day. Due to the Cloudy conditions, Cottonee appeared to be the most popular spawn on the day with Electrike and Whismur not too far behind. I caught all the regular spawns of the event, but in a session that included over a 100 catches, I only managed to get 3 Darumakas and Litwicks. Granted, I wasn't checking the radar a whole lot so the next time I'm going to hunt specifically for them.
In my first raid of the event I caught a weather boosted Terrakion with a 2630 CP. Of the 5 star raids, Terrakion is the most useful monster so I was glad to get that out of the way and he'll be handy especially since I don't have too many rock types and a few of the legendaries are flying types.
How are you finding the game in 2021 Emp?

Big Pete, I started the new mission AFTER I sent out all my gifts already which sucks considering I have to send 10 and could've cut 8 out in one morning, but oh well; the mission will last a bit longer. I also accepted Emperor, friend request BEFORE the 'make a new friend' mission was given to me which made me laugh also. I just deleted/re-added my son though and that's a little trick or glitch I always use when the 'make a new friend' mission pops up.

Thankfully they give you that 45 gift limit so I was able to take care of it when I went on my walk.
Also hit 50km which is one of the few times I've hit it.

The first day of the Festival of Lights event is in the books in Australia and it was largely a productive day. Due to the Cloudy conditions, Cottonee appeared to be the most popular spawn on the day with Electrike and Whismur not too far behind. Plenty of those three Pokemon in my area, along with Blitzle. How are you finding the game in 2021 Emp? To be honest I was expecting it to be more different. The core gameplay - walking, catching, and battling, is almost exactly the same as it was five years ago. Not necessarily a bad thing, just a little surprised. Certainly not glitchy anymore. It used to freeze and crash all the time when I had it before. Not sure if it was the quality of my phone or the software itself. Perhaps both. However it's refreshing to have hundreds of new Pokemon available to catch. I used to be pretty good at the curveball throws but now I've lost the technique. My Pokeballs go flying off the side when I try, so I've stuck to regular straight throws. The new features (new to me anyway) such as gift exchanging, battling, Team Rocket battles and raids are all interesting. I've also started with the buddy system. Koffing is my buddy, purely because I was trying to get to 50 candies when I quit the game. Only 2 candies away now. But yeah, I don't really get it. There's this AR minigame where you have to touch footprints or something which I didn't understand. I just spammed berries and now Koffing is on the mini-map hovering around with me. Sometimes he gets hearts. Maybe he'll give me excessive smoke inhalation as a reward. Fought about 20 battles, lost the majority. Basically boils down to how lucky you get with the types. My first 4 battles in a row I got typefucked in every one. Seems if your first Pokemon is weak to their first, that effectively decides the game. You switch out, they will switch out and continue to typefuck you. Besides that it's mashing with the barest amount of strategy. It's a decent way to stock up on stardust though, and there's no cost because you don't have to use items to heal your Pokemon. There's a gym about 5 minute walk from my house. I took it over on my lunch break. Stuck a 1800CP Snorlax to defend. He's still there, standing proud. It's in a residential area so hardly seems like a hotbed of activity. What are these missions you guys are talking about? How do I access them? Also - converting berries to stardust. Tell me more!

Outside of collecting candies the only benefit of the buddy system is catch assist where the buddy will occasionally perform a header when a Pokemon knocks a ball away. You get that on Lvl 2. Otherwise it's a way to farm candy or perform special evolutions. For instance Eevee is my buddy because I need to evolve it into Umbreon by walking 10km and then evolving it during the way as my buddy. You can also feed them poffins which halves the amount of kilometres you have to walk to earn candy, but you may want to save them for more demanding Pokemon.
I was surprised to see how many battles you've played, you've certainly got more experience than me. AFAIK it's all about building a strong team, knowing when to switch Pokemon out, knowing when to shield and just understanding the meta. If you can get to Rank 20, you can actually capture legendary Pokemon as a reward. The current raid trio are all available as daily rewards.
See the binoculars on the right just above the Pokemon radar? Click it and a new menu should pop up with Today, Field and Special as separate categories. You acquire one free field research as soon as a new day begins and you can access three new field research each time you spin a new Pokestop. These Field Research will ask you to complete a certain task and will reward you with items, special encounters etc.
What the Kid and I were talking about were Special Field Research which are multiple part quests that ask you to complete a series of tasks. It's a great way to earn exp and access rare Pokemon.
As far as converting berries into stardust, whenever you leave a Pokemon at a gym, if you click it and click go to gym, it will show you all the monsters. Click a monster and feed it 10 berries to earn 300 stardust and potentially a candy of that Pokemon. If you can always keep an eye on gyms. Sometimes they won't be accessible since a raid is going on, but if they're open or it's just a giant egg you will have the opportunity to add your Pokemon. I think there's a limit of 20 gyms, but as long as your Pokemon accrue a total of 8 hours and 20 minutes before being eliminated each day you'll earn free 50 Pokecoins which you can spend in the shop.

You know you can evolve Eeeve to whatever pokemon you want just by changing it's name right? Here's the list and the names you have to change them to: Vaporeon: Rainer. Jolteon: Sparky. Flareon: Pyro. Espeon: Sakura. Umbreon: Tamao. Leafeon: Linnea. Glaceon: Rea. Sylveon: Kira. You can only do it ONCE though so make sure you're happy with the Eeeves strength before you do the change. The Umbreons have the weakest XP after evolution, though so I'd aim high for it.

Yeah I still haven't cashed in on that yet, I'm waiting for the right Eevee since it's a good budget option. However I had to walk it 10km for the A Ripple In Time quest and have to do it again for the next page.

I forgot to mention how absolutely disgusting it is when you do a raid and the Pokemon doesn't stay in the ball and runs away. It's flat out robbery.
