Classic Simpsons is right up there as one of the best shows of all-time. Modern Simpsons? Not so much. I guess it's been better in recent years, but it's still difficult to get excited. Just like Jericho, really. I didn't, but even if that was the case, then if Jericho was just like all the other wrestlers, why would I tune in because of him? Raw wrestling ability. Have you even seen his armbar?

AEW feels like another niche Indy promotion. That’s okay; RoH has underdelivered for years.
They’re not anything close to competition, and that’s also okay.

I'm really pleased to see they are going outside of the "comfort zone" with some of their additions to the women's division. Signing Nyla Rose is a big deal for very obvious reasons, but she's built a good reputation in the East Coast indies and touring in Japan - and from what I've seen in (admittedly gif format) she's athletic and exciting. I knew of similarly little about Yuka Sakazaki but after a quick Youtube dive she's got a fun character and is a well rounded wrestler. And Aja Kong is Aja Kong. Apparently Omega is behind most of this, which is cool.

I dunno how I feel about Kenny being here. On one hand I feel like without him this is a bust and at the same time he feels so much more above everyone else on the roster.
Jericho I find enjoyable in short bursts. His inclusion here feels like an expansion pack of his New Japan work, so I can't really get excited.

I'm interested in weather they appoint a real on-screen authority figure. How many Executive VPs can there be? I don't really want to endure another Elite civil war. Actually, I'd prefer Cody and The Bucks take step back and stay behind the scenes after Double or Nothing and create some new talent/storylines that don't revolve around everyone being proud of themselves for starting AEW.
Kenny, I really wish Kenny debuted at the PPV in a non-wrestling role instead, setting up the next super-card.
If they can sign Okada and Naito away from NJPW. Holy shitballs Batman, that would be insane. Even Jay White and the Tongans.

Don't care for their constant circlejerking whenever they're together. Are they changing wrestling? Sure. Good for them. But not in a direction I like all that much. If they can sign Okada and Naito away from NJPW. Holy shitballs Batman, that would be insane. Even Jay White and the Tongans. Not gonna happen. Don't say these things. Don't put these thoughts in my head.

This company should try to elevate new folks, not copy/paste the top programs from another fed. At their current cadence of two shows a year, doing that wouldn't really differentiate it from the NJPW US excursion shows. I know I may not seem like it, but I do want this to succeed. But right now, I don't see that much to get excited about.

Not a surprising match to headline the first show. To be honest, as indifferent as I am acting, I will check out this match, and perhaps the rest of the show depending on the card. Hard to imagine this being anything other than a NJPW rehash though. Then again, both guys are super creative, so they may surprise me.

I am late to the party here, but how are they changing wrestling and why don't you like it? And how do they circlejerk?

I'm not really up to snuff on Being The Elite either, but that's because like Emperor and many others, I just don't care. I've tried watching it before and I just got bored. They act out expansions of their own story lines sometimes but it's mostly meta kayfabe stuff and inside jokes that you won't get if you haven't watched like the last 30 episodes. If people like it, great. It's probably good content for them, and it gives more life to the characters they play in the ring. It just isn't for me. As for Chris Jericho, he's my favourite wrestler of all-time. I will argue with anyone that he's the GOAT. He's got it all and has reinvented himself more times than I can count. I love him. His jump to NJPW is one of the greatest moments in wrestling history for me. I can't remember the last time I marked out at something wrestling-related before that day. I don't want to say that I think him going to AEW was a mistake, because I don't think it is. I think he's using his clout and star power to lift up some genuinely excellent talent that are doing something ambitious, which is something the industry needs. I love that he's once again reinventing himself and helping build up something new. I just don't feel excited about it and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I'l wait and see, I'll watch the shows, I'll tune in if they strike up a TV deal or start airing weekly shows online or whatever they end up doing. I just know they'll lose me pretty quick if they don't wow me out the gate.

Well you stand in a circle..... It will be an alternative to WWE, who just got in hot water with sponsors over Nia Jax facing Ambrose.

Thank you RT for answering Lionheart's question better than I could. When I talk about circlejerking I mean things like the Jericho Cruise, the end of All In, and that Triple Threat between Cody, Ibushi and Kenny in NJPW.

Double Or Nothing sold out in 4 minutes.
Not really surprising but still..wow. 17k+ seats in under 5 minutes and Meltzer says the market for tickets was around 45k.
To put that in perspective, MSG and the Staples Center are about 21k for wrestling. Biggest indoor arena in the US is in Lexington at 23k-ish.
If Dave’s numbers are accurate and this demand continues, they could easily sell out one of those buildings, or even go big at a stadium like Chase Field or something. That might be too big a risk right now, but still...wow.
I have a feeling they try for All In 2 at MSG.

Yet people still write off AEW as a threat.
Money, the talent, a TV deal, fans chomping at the bit for any piece they can get.

Oh I didn’t know they announced Jacksonville already.
The stadium there holds 67k and a bit, and is expandable to 85k...I don’t think they attempt that.
It’s interesting that they’ve announced the city but not the venue though. I wonder if they’re thinking about it.

So, Undertaker is appearing at Starrcast, the weekender directly associated with AEW.
And rock tweeted out congrats to Jericho and AEW on the sellout.
If nothing else, these sorts of things are good fun to look at from the outside looking in.
But you never know ...

Like say, the StubHub Center in Carson City, BMO Field in Toronto, or Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. A show at BMO Field would be so cool, and they’d be right around their 50k number once you add floor seating (NHL Centennial Classic did just over 40k but there wasn’t much field seating, if any). If Dave’s numbers are right, I bet they hit that 45-50k market number in Toronto easily. People from all over Quebec, Ontario, New York and Michigan are going to drive up for that, guaranteed. Kenny Omega wresting a big outdoor show in Canada? Dude.

Oh shit, Lucha Bros are huge. AEW seems to be putting together quite the roster.
I find it interesting that people who did not follow the Elite before All Elite Wrestling do not understand it. What they are doing differently is the very stuff people say they do not follow such as the marketing side, the social media things and the stories they created for themselves.

Not necessarily AEW related, but Jericho's interview raised some interesting points I hadn't thought of in awhile.
The WWE really dropped the ball with Jericho and Owens in 2017. They were the hottest act in Pro Wrestling and they had a serious case to main event Wrestlemania. It reminded me that Jericho was initially the fan favourite to win the 2017 Royal Rumble before it became obvious that the Goldberg/Lesnar storyline was going to continue through to Wrestlemania. Still, Owens/Jericho had a serious case to main event the show because the angle was so hot and had so much history. Instead it was placed second on the card and it just seemed like the match never had the attention to detail it would have had if it was a marquee match. Even as somebody who absolutely loved the Goldberg/Lesnar feud, to the point where it's one of my favourite feuds of all-time, I think it hurt Bill that his angle came at the expense of Owens/Jericho. It upset a vocal portion of the audience, and created this weird disconnect that hurt the entire event.
I thought Jericho was on the ball when he hand-picked Naito for a program in NJPW, but as it turns out it was actually Gedo's idea. Jericho originally wanted Tanahashi, but Gedo had other plans for Hiroshi and pushed for Naito. Jericho-Tanahashi would have made for a better face/heel dynamic, but Naito felt like the bigger star around that time and more logical given Jericho's desire to work with hot acts like Bray Wyatt, CM Punk and AJ Styles in the past.
He also called NJPW out on their recent US Tour and said they should have cancelled it once they couldn't get the visas cleared in time. Thank god somebody else said it, I was amazed at how much of a free pass other fans were willing to give NJPW here. Even then, the talent they were going to send was pitiful.
It was a really interesting listen and felt like an unofficial episode of Talk Is Jericho. About 90 minutes of Jericho giving his thoughts on the State of Pro Wrestling in 2019 and the excitement of AEW.

I don’t disagree with what Jericho is saying, but don’t agree either. I think what he does better than most is articulating what he thinks is right. Or at least very convincing in making his point.
I’ve never seen Jericho has a ‘closer’ main event guy, he’s the sort of talent that does fantastic work as an alternative to the main event picture instead.
