Limited Run hosted a summer showcase, announcing the following games... Castlevania Advanced Collection Gargoyles Remastered Gex Trilogy Collection Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection Tomba Just take all of my money cause I'll gladly add them all to my physical Switch collection. FINALLY! Been waiting on Castlevania Advanced to hit, almost broke down and grabbed it digital a couple times but I was like "No, they got the original and Requiem collections, they'll get Advanced eventually."

Two of the biggest announcements out of that show for me came via WayForward
1) The long lost Shantae GBA game is getting revitalized, so far they're saying it's only coming out as a Game Boy Advance game but they would be foolish to not put this on all systems. Anything Shantae means I am in, such a good friggin series.
Shantae Advance: Risky's Revolution, why not?
2) Clock Tower 1 remake with WayForward animated cutscenes and other enhancements.

Why didn't the Saturn get over? Was it a lack of proper Sonic System seller?
Console looks cool. The s logo looks cool. What the fuck?

It did get over, but only in Japan where it crushed the N64.
The system just didn't cater to western audiences. The big games like Super Robot Wars, Sakura Wars etc. didn't appeal to the west and the system was missing a system seller. Plus with the release of the CD and 32X, SEGA had saturated the market and Sony had under-cut them.
It's a shame because the Saturn is a really under-appreciated console. Virtua Fighter 2 is the Street Fighter 2 of the 3D Fighting genre and games like Panzer Dragoon, NiGHTS, Guardian Heroes etc are quality titles. The arcade ports were awesome too and it just has that charm of early 3D.

The biggest title I really want to try is Shining Force III, hate that it's lost on the Saturn. Unlike Lunar 1 and 2, which was able to land on the PS1 via Crystal Dynamics getting it on multiple consoles, SFIII got stuck as a first party Sega game. In addition, I heard a lot of things about Burning Rangers.
I have Guardian Heroes on the XBOX, just a fantastic beat em up. Even when I played it while I was in foster care, it was just awesome. I also have Nights: Into Dreams on one of my systems and am able to get Panzer Dragoon I believe(They remade it few years ago)
Think there were a couple of Shumps also stuck on Sega Saturn. I feel like the console was too soon and Sega gave up on it to drop the Dreamcast which also failed pretty bad all things considered and sort of ended Sega's console run.

Shining Force III is one of the few games I've played on the hardware and I was taken aback by the Super Mario RPG like overworld and just how bustling the towns and cities were. It's a little slow in places with battles dragging out longer than they did in previous entries but otherwise I enjoyed my relatively brief time with it.
Saturn emulation has come a long way. If you find yourself having a lazy evening, you should dive in and have a taste.

The real heart of why the Saturn failed was because of the power struggle between the 2 international branches that controlled the company. Sega of Japan and Sega of America were like two completely different companies and shit got really weird between them around the time of the Saturn. Sega of Japan I think was jealous of the success of SOA, their marketing of the Genesis was like something they should teach about in college courses for marketing. The Genesis never should have cut into Nintendos market share as hard as it did. SOJ or some of their top execs felt like they should have got more credit for that. In all actuality there was a specific CEO at SOA that pushed to make the moves that made the Gen a success, I forget his name but all of the decisions that he made that led to the Genesis’ success in USA he had to battle with the Japanese branch the whole way.
So what you had with the Saturn was this weird corporate scenario between the Japan branch and USA branch where you had this deal going on with the Japanese branch similar to what WWF would do when they would sign some big WCW or ECW name like they had no interest in pushing the guy just want to bury them in a way where it like proves they were right all along. That was where Sega of Japan was with the Saturn. They fucked up the American branch and totally neglected the American market.
Big example was look at all the American football games on the Genesis. To RPG nerds on a forum this wouldt matter but this was massive seller for the Genesis. Literally nobody who was serious about playing football games wanted an SNES. There were like 22 football games on the Genesis, including Segas own first party NFL series which they put way more effort into that EA was Madden. Instead of releasing a top tier NFL 97 for the Saturn they instead subbed it out to Gametek, the worst of the worst third party developers. They subbed Shinobi out to another sub par third party. No Ecco, Toejam & Earl, Sonic, Phantasy Star, none of the ips that gave Genesis life were brought over to Saturn. Console had no identity.

I tinkered around with NBA Live 97 and 98 then spent some time with NBA Jam. My fan fiction recently sent me down 90’s NBA rabbit hole. NBA Jam for Saturn is really cool but it’s interesting to me now how bare bones it was for a 32 bit game, no season mode or stat tracking just the plane old Arcade game. Seems like there were a lot of games like that for Saturn. It was still more of an “Arcade in the living room” vibe.
The game I got stuck on was Marvel Super Heroes, stellar 2d fighter that really shows off what the Saturn was, very high powered 2d beast. They just left all that power mostly untapped. Playing this game really gives you an idea what all could have been. This port blows the PS1 version away big time. It’s arcade perfect.

Been having a lot of fun with this on the Saturn:
The six button Saturn pad is excellent, one of the GOAT controllers. The Capcom fighters like these were way better than what the PS1 could handle on those ports, especially if you had the ram expansion pack that goes in the cart slot on the Saturn. Unfortunately most of the Saturn games are early era 3D shit that has aged like sour milk or a lot of games in that era were going for the Mortal Kombat pre-rendered style graphics. The Saturn is flooded with shit like that, but these Capcom fighters like X-Men Children of The Atom show off what the system could really do. Some of the effects and the smoothness of the animation is really gorgeous and has aged like fine wine. Really puts over how big of a missed opportunity the Saturn was, should have had some sweet next level 2D games.
I do love all the quirky add ons and peripherals of the Saturn, the racing wheel is excellent, the Dual trigger/flight stick thingy is great, loads of good light gun shooters if you have the CRT, also all the tech that was way ahead of it's time for 1994-95, the video encoder chip that you can get to watch Video CD's(I have this and used to have ECW Anarchy Rulz 99 and Heatwave 98 on VCD, watching ECW on Sega Saturn just natural fit), the modem/keyboard/mouse for the primitive web 1995 web browser on your TV, also the online dial up co-op it could do was super ahead of it's time(and I believe some of that stuff still works if you can find a landline).

Watching the most insane stream. It is the Resident Evil 2 Remake but with Sherry replaced with an anime girl that says random anime girl quotes instead of her lines. It is one of the funniest things I seen.
Also has Mr X being replaced by Thomas the Tank Engine.

Dude I want a Saturn Mini. What games are you loading it up with?
I want one too, but I could see it being loaded up with games like Rayman, Duke Nukem, Tomb Raider etc. games I'd rather play on other platforms.

Nintendo has added the Game Boy Color classics The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons to Nintendo Switch Online. Sweet, I've actually been thinking about these games recently.
Have you ever played any of the Oracle games? They tend to get slept on but they're fantastic follow-ups to Link Awakenings. I started with Seasons, so that's the version I remember but I recall Ages was more well regarded.
@ness your thoughts? Isn't Link Awakening your #1 Zelda?

I've played through all the mainline Zeldas except for 2 (been holding out on a remaster but seems unlikely) until BOTW. That includes all the Gameboy titles including the DS ones. I think the top down 2 Zeldas are the best of the series. Sure OOT has those epic cut scenes with Link bugging out like a geek. Plus with oracle I believe there's incentive to beat both, maybe a bonus Ganon fight if you do? I can't remember.
The last time I really enjoyed a Zelda game was that one where you could turn flat. The one that introduced any order/open world baby steps. I actually didn't care for that aspect, which is probably why BOTW just didn't appeal to me. I don't think I've ever revisited so all my thoughts on Zelda are in those "saw the match live" type of star ratings. I give LA a lot of hype, I'm sure it was top 5 in the Gameboy countdown. It probably is #1, but I'm not sure if I've ever made a statement like that. I always feel propelled to say LTTP in like a smark sorta way. As wrestling fans we can admit there are dudes/promos/matches that are only praised because we're "supposed" to. Like if someone was like Savage/Steamboat bruh... I'd be like, yeah I can see it.
It's weird isn't it? The lower midcard Zelda titles remind me of things like Sonic Advance/Rush/Other 2d Sonic games. For whatever reason we ignore Gameboy when it comes to long dated releases. Like how much hype went into 4 (and it being the worst received maybe outside of 06) despite the fact that 2d sonics were coming out on the regular. I'm sorry but isn't "doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's a decent game" basically a rave review for most Sonic titles. The gameboy ones were making towns on a small scale while 3d floundered with warewolves and goofy gimmicks.
Like I feel like this post essentially is like put some RESPKT on the handhelds.

Sonic Origins Plus was actually on sale, for $15 dollars less then the cover price, so I couldnt pass on the collection. As for Tunic, it's a game I've wanted to play for a while, so I'm happy to finally have it in my collection.

So I'm glad I never picked up Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle, as it has been announced that there will be a Double Dragon collection, with a release date of November 9th, 2023. This new collection features the first three Double Dragon games that were a part of the Kunio-kun bundle, as well as Double Dragon IV, Double Dragon Advance, and Super Double Dragon.
Yeah, so I'm kinda excited for this, just for Super Double Dragon, I loved the game as a kid and spent countless hours playing the game with my brother. I'm thinking between this collection, Double Dragon Neon, and Double Dragon Gaiden, early next year will see me playing this series a lot.

Is this my first ever post in the Video Games forum?!
Been sorting through a few old boxes my parents had in their attic since I moved out and found my old GameBoy and a bunch of games all still in beautiful condition (maybe the screen has faded a little bit...or it just seems dim by 2023 standards). I remember getting this as a present for the plane flight when I went to England for the first time as a youngster. Played some Super Mario Bros last night!

I thought you got lost for a second  Yeah the Game Boy original screen is hella dim, the green texture takes some time to get used to after being spoiled with the advancements even when it comes to portable gaming. Still can jam with Pokemon Gen I and II on it though if I had one.

Charles Martinet, the man known as the voice of Super Mario, is stepping away from the role after 32 years.
He's now serving as a Mario Ambassador.
In addition to Mario, Martinet also provided the voices for Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario, Metal Mario, and Shadow Mario.
So does Chris Pratt take his place in the video games, now?
