And while this has been (and will continue to be) a haphazard and lackadaisical project hampered by my OCD, tendency to procrastinate, and affinity for gummies… I encourage you to not be deceived about what this truly is.

What this truly is, is my long overdue love letter to the indomitable, incomparable Beast Incarnate…

Some quick upfront housekeeping:

First, in the spirit of full disclosure… I couldn't find footage of every Brock match. The biggest blind spot was OVW. I'll note which matches I couldn't actually watch, and I'll still rank them based on proxy guesstimation. I'll also drop notes to explain my thinking and what I would've expected the not-watched match to be like.

Second… I'm not done (re)watching matches yet. As noted in the other thread, I'm still wading through the multi-man matches. I want to give every match its fair shake, but I'm also not feeling overly motivated to revisit Brock's late 2003 multi-man stuff involving the likes of Matt Morgan and Nathan Jones. But I promise to eventually get there! Brock deserves it.

Third… Also as noted in the other thread, there's no way I can do this as a true Top 200-style countdown. I ended up grouping matches into categories that I'll post as "chapters" (in no particular order). I'm thinking that my next post in this thread will most likely be a placeholder, which I'll come back and update as a Table of Contents/Summary section. At the end, once all chapters have been posted, I do commit to sharing my official rankings of Brock's best rivals, greatest moments, Top 10 dream matches, and Top 25 matches (pulling from across all chapters).

Fourth… This "love letter" is being composed on and is this optimized for the mobile skin. If it looks like shit to those of you viewing via desktop computer or some app… my bad. Let me know what the issues are, and I'll try to address them. I would've kept this as a purely text-based project, but Baker and jTjohncenaGOAT have applied some indirect peer pressure with their pics and gifs and such.

Lastly… As a tribute to Brock's appearance schedule and match frequency post-2004, I make no promises about when I'll post new chapters. I'll aim for once a week, but that might prove to be a stretch. By the time all is said and done, #BROCKTOBER could end up spanning several months. But so what if it does? In the perfect world, #BROCKTOBER would be every month.

Chapter 1: Brock Lesnar vs. The Shield

Lazy, so copying and pasting my initial reaction from over a year ago:

"Starting with WM34, and I feel like this just doesn't feel like it should. Like the fans just don't care and are tired of this already.

I do like the premise of the Brock belly-to-belly overhead suplexing Roman around the outside of the ring spot, but the execution seems like it fell apart after Roman landed on his head (I think!?) on the second suplex and seems to be kinda out of it. I'm not sure if Brock is out of it or not too, or maybe just gassed, but him taking the top off the one table only to try BTBOHsuplexing Roman through a different table (with the dazed Roman taking the move in a really weird awkward way) made no sense.

And I think the crowd is picking up on all of this, and are falling further and further out. This just feels like an uninspired rehash of their first clash. At least Roman generally sells Brock's stuff better than HHH did. But this crowd is deader than any of the mostly dead crowds from the HHH matches.

And these table spots are bad wrecks. And now they caused Cole to have weird audio. Ugh... This is ugly. I mean, right? It's not just me? The crowd sure sounds bored.

Lesnar's high knee has been my favorite thing so far. The only reason that that knee didn't shatter Roman's skull, Corey Graves, is because Roman is Samoan... You can say it. And as well as know, there's a reason you don't headbutt Samoans.

I'm so confused by the booking of this match. Had they wanted this match to still take place but have Lesnar go over, I think they would've been better served to have Lesnar just steamroll Roman here in under 2 minutes like when Goldberg steamrolled Lesnar. I think at least the shock and brevity of that would've popped the fans. Instead, we got this deal which really kinda just echoes their first match without doing anything really new or different. And so me and the fans in attendance are so disinterested as a result.

Even with Roman gushing like a wannabe Eddie or Vince. Jesus though... Is that a hard way? Or just an improper blade job? It's a shame no one cares still.

I'm nervous about the cage match now. However, that all said, I do have high hopes that System will be able to book a better rivalry than we got in real life."

9.) 19.08.2018 WWE Universal Title: Roman Reigns defeats Brock Lesnar (c) (6:08) - TITLE CHANGE !!!

WWE SummerSlam 2018 - Pay Per View @ Barclays Center in New York City, New York, USA

I couldn't find my initial reaction to this match to copy/paste in another lazy move, so I'm going off recollection here…

The ONLY thing this match had working in its favor was that it was short. It was killed by the preceding booking, namely WM34 and the GRR cage match. The fans were disinterested, bored, and either disengaged or actively against what WWE was giving them. This should've been the WM34 match if WWE wanted to pull the trigger on Roman beating Brock. Then maybe run the WM34 match at the GRR, and then the cage match at SummerSlam. I don't know…

Long story short, don't waste your time watching any Brock/Roman match that didn't take place at WM31.

The feud that could've and should've been a modern day epic had it not been for injuries and shitty booking. Here's still holding out hope that one day System realizes his rebooked Brock/Roman feud, which seemed like it was headed in a much better direction and apt to be handled in a MUCH better way.

8.) 27.04.2018 WWE Universal Title Steel Cage: Brock Lesnar (c) defeats Roman Reigns (9:14)

WWE Greatest Royal Rumble - Pay Per View @ King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi-Arabien

Still lazy, still copy-pasting initial reactions from over a year ago...

"How have I never heard of, much less thought of on my own, the term "Brocktagon"!?

Also, can I just say that I hate cage matches. The match type. Especially in these chain link cages. At least the old jungle gym ones looked more intimidating. It doesn't help that WWE always contests them under silly rules. If the purpose is to escape, that should be the only way to win. If pinfall or submissions are options, escape shouldn't be... And then at that point it should just be a HIAC match instead. But I digress...

The ambiance of this Saudi Arabian show seems kinda different and cool. So even if this match blows, at least there's that.

This is neither here nor there about this match specifically, but just an idea I had... I would love to see Brock just German suplex Roman so many times that it weakens a spot in the ring, which Brock ends up German suplexing Roman THROUGH! Then TBD on whether Roman crawls out from under the ring to win, or if Brock just walks out with Roman presumed to be dead.

I actually kinda like the story of this match. Brock actually wants to keep Roman in the cage to keep toying with him. Whoops, never mind... I think that was accidental psychology. Why is Brock trying to climb out? I mean besides to set up a telegraphed spot? Meanwhile, Roman's story here shouldn't be trying to beat Brock per se... Since Brock apparently asked for this match to stick it to Roman, Roman should aim to escape as quick as possible as a way to stick it right back in Brock's face. Alternatively, the story should be about Roman's stubbornness costing him. As it stands, I don't understand the story... Because sometimes Roman can go toe to toe with Brock, and then other times he can't lace Brock's boots? It seems so inconsistent from match to match. It's stuff like this that really has me looking forward to System's universe instead.

Another idea I just had... If all these matches are anymore is a running talk of how many times the same moves are hit over and over, they should get onscreen tally graphics to help me count along and keep track. Turn it into like a real life video game. Plus, if the Royal Rumble countdown clock is any indication, the live fans would enjoy watching and counting along.

Okay, now at least that was a cool and unexpected finish. That spot alone makes this the second best Lesnar/Roman match. Despite the NFL-like commentary squabbles about rule interpretation."

7.) 03.04.2016 No Holds Barred Street Fight: Brock Lesnar defeats Dean Ambrose (12:50)

WWE WrestleMania 32 - Pay Per View @ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA

I was super sour on this match in real time, but not for the same reason as all you Ambrose fanboys. I was sour mostly because I couldn't believe Brock was being "wasted" on a scrub like Dean. (Not that I was particularly looking forward to the Brock/Bray thing I think they were previously building toward and then randomly pivoted away from.)

But in hindsight, I think WM32 as a whole presented so much to be sour about from top to bottom that it was tough to be positive about anything on that card at all. Having finally listened to those TIJ Dean Ambrose podcasts and hearing what Deano had in mind for the Brock matches, and knowing that this personal passion project was in the works, I convinced myself I owed it to this match to give it a rewatch... no matter how bad the initial taste.

And honestly, upon rewatch and entirely out of any context, it wasn't THAT bad. Was it everything it could've been? No, probably not. But am I convinced Dean Ambrose is capable of great singles matches? No, definitely not. So I think this was probably pretty close to the best it could be. You wouldn't be wasting your time watching it, but it's also not something I'd encourage anyone to go out of their way to see if they haven't seen it already.

6.) 21.02.2016WWE World Heavyweight Title #1 Contendership Triple Threat: Roman Reigns defeats Brock Lesnar and Dean Ambrose (17:38)

WWE Fastlane 2016 - Pay Per View @ Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, USA

The only initial reaction I could find from when I first watched this was that it was apparently booked like a handicap match... or at least parts of it were. Full disclosure, I didn't rewatch this one... just went on memory. I think by default it had to be a tit hair better than an Ambrose singles match, but for sure it wasn't good enough to crack the "Top 5" of this chapter.

I think Roman and Dean were being booked as best buddies around this time, whereas Brock was still on a monster tear, so it made sense for Roman and Dean to work together to try to dispatch Brock. Of course, in "real time" I was displeased with the result. IMO, Brock should've pinned Dean here. Then maybe had the WrestleMania match with Dean on the following RAW... then moved onto something bigger and better for WM32, or else just enjoy a little time off. I dunno... I think overall the booking across the board from this time was putting a lot of bad tasting things in the mouths of the fans.

My final take for this one would be similar to the WM32 match... not bad, but also not worth going out of your way to see if you haven't already. A far FAR cry from Brock's other triple threat involving two Shield members; i.e., the #1 match in this chapter: Brock vs. Roman vs. Seth from WM31.

5.) 14.07.2019 WWE Universal Title: Brock Lesnar defeats Seth Rollins (c) (0:16) - TITLE CHANGE !!!

WWE Extreme Rules 2019 - Pay Per View @ Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

A quintessential cash-in to take the title off some greasy brat who didn't deserve the belt and get it back around the waist of a true and proper deserving champion.

Love the surprise factor, love the short but sweet beatdown, and of course I fucking loved the result. For as short and sweet as this was, doesn't hurt going out of your way to watch the YouTube clip.

Added another chapter to a surprisingly decent feud (or rivalry... whatever) between Brock and Seth. Because of the brevity though, I can't fairly rank it ahead of the other three Brock/Seth singles matches.

I also awarded this match bonus points for the epicness that is, was, and will always be MITB Brock. Dancing with that boombox briefcase!? So f'n good.

4.) 19.07.2015 WWE World Heavyweight Title: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Brock Lesnar - No Contest (9:00)

WWE Battleground 2015 - Pay Per View @ Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Another instance where I didn't bother with a rewatch, so just working off of memory.

If I recall my real time reaction correctly, I think my biggest gripe about this match was how evenly contested it was... but I honestly could be misremembering how "even" it actually was. It would make total sense if Seth was using his relative speed and agility plus aerial skills plus plus Authority shenanigans to somehow go toe-to-toe with Brock... but at the time I was all-in on Brock finally reclaiming from Seth what Seth stole from Brock at WM31.

I remember being really into Brock/Taker V, which had been Brock's last match before this at SummerSlam... loved the bombfest gun fight between the two iconic titans, and totally bought into a rejuvenated Taker finally getting a win over Brock... especially in that fashion. Since Seth was nowhere near Taker's level in my eyes (then, now, forever) I presumed Brock would bounce back from the loss by steamrolling Seth here to win back the title and thus set up the final Brock/Taker chapter for the title and perhaps Taker's career in their second HIAC encounter.

What we got instead for the finish wasn't bad, as it essentially got us to Brock/Taker VI anyway. It's just that IMO the title should ALWAYS either be around Brock's waist or at minimum involved in a match where he's challenging for it.

Anyway... as a standalone with no context, this match is still a decent watch. Seth's crossfit/parkour abilities allow him to work some fun spots in between some excellent ragdolling for Lesnar.

3.) 11.08.2019 WWE Universal Title: Seth Rollins defeats Brock Lesnar (c) (13:25) - TITLE CHANGE !!!

WWE SummerSlam 2019 - Pay Per View @ Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Ranks just below their WM35 match because I had a harder time stomaching the result here. Seth got one over on Brock at 'Mania. Brock should've murdered Seth's punk ass here to restore order to the universe.

Featured an all-time great spot too with Brock swinging Seth around by the tape bandaging his injured ribs. If I can find the gif, I'll come back and edit this post to include it.

In the perfect world, Brock not only goes over Seth here to reclaim the title but also breaks the Stretch Muffler back out here to force the submission (or at least cause Seth to pass out). Seth seems like the perfect kind of opponent for that hold. Would've added a nice extra dimension to the finisher spamfest theme that second-run Brock's matches sometimes follow too closely.

Honestly, if it wasn't for my super markdom, as a standalone match without context, this match probably should rank ahead of their WM35 match... especially factoring in that aforementioned epic rib tape spot. But man, I was so pissed with the result. Surprise me once, WWE; shame on me. Suprise me twice though; fuck your stupid booking.

2.) 07.04.2019 WWE Universal Title: Seth Rollins defeats Brock Lesnar (c) (2:30) - TITLE CHANGE !!!

WWE WrestleMania 35 - Pay Per View @ MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA

This one earns bonus points for card placement. I loved the whole deal of "if Brock's not going on last, then he sure as shit ain't hanging around any longer than he has to" and Brock beating the fuck out of Seth originally. Felt like we were finally going to get some long overdue retribution for Brock never having a decisive win over Seth in their past tangles. But then Seth starts going low blow/curb stomp crazy and pulls off a shocking upset. Brock sold amazingly, as he generally always does, and the unexpected booking of the match made for a nice surprise... so despite the result, I didn't hate this and still don't. For as short as it is, it's worth the watch (including the pre-match promo from Heyman for scene setting).
