Not my favorite, but it's a great movie. I'm just glad it beat the shit out of The Goonies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, When Harry Met Sally, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, Aliens, The Breakfast Club, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. God, this list sucks. That's almost everything on it. Not that those are all bad movies, but for a BEST OF THE 80's stacked supercard to have all this on it...I am in disbelief. The true classics I voted for better come up above Star Wars. Your list had few actual revered classics on it , you’re the minority and if anything you’ve proven you’re perception of movies placed in the lexicon to be skewed at best.

That’s the problem here. I chose the real classics. Real as in real good. But everyone else chose the popular classics.

Arguably one of the greatest sequels ever released. Not only did it improve on a technical stand-point, but the movie went in directions you couldn't have expected introducing us to some great new characters while developing the ones we were familiar with. It managed to be both satisfying while leaving room for more, which as we've seen with the other films in the series is incredibly difficult to do.
I didn't vote for it, but it belongs on the list.

They brought puppeteering to a whole new level and advanced the field lightyears ahead into the future with that change.

What did it do technically better than the first? The entire Battle at Hoth sequence sequence is a far more complicated action set piece than the Death Star sequence in the original with so many moving set pieces. It really is how well put together it is for a film that's nearly 40 years old.

Lower than I expected it to place but I’m good with it being in the top ten.
It’s cool if you guys don’t like Star Wars but saying it doesn’t belong on the list is just plain wrong. You can’t have an 80s list without this movie.

Six movies left and there are three from my list that are definitely making it. I’m curious what the other three are. Probably at least one more from my list but I’m not sure which one. Also probably drawing a blank on a movie I missed or just didn’t vote for.
I thought this list would be really predictable but it’s been a little different than I expected.

Empires Strikes Back was my #1 and it was a pretty easy choice for me. It's easily one of the greatest sequels ever made, right up there with Godfather II IMO. The six movies ahead of it better be VERY damn good to be beat it out.

These films get talked about and have influenced a hell of a lot more movies going forward than some pretentious art piece. I mean think about it, how many Oscar winning films in the 80's still get talked about today? Not a whole lot.

Jim Hensen was a collaborator on the puppets, right?

I mean think about it, how many Oscar winning films in the 80's still get talked about today? Not a whole lot. They are classic. Classically OVERRATED. The sheep roll the dice and select some undeserving fan favorite every so often based off the most obscure and arbitrary criteria like “lol skipping school is cool and funny” and then the movie gets overplayed into oblivion like a self-fulfilling prophecy that ensures the masses can never escape the chosen film because the masses of mindless idiots will like anything you play in front of them. You should all be thanking me for coming to PW and enlightening you with the wisdom of a true master of media. I have saved PW by coming here and preventing its complete and utter downfall into popular absurdity. I will now partake in a little bit of the bubbly in celebration of my presence here.

The Princess Bride is great , and I say that as someone who's not really a huge fan of fantasy films - especially of this generation. I watched it for the first time as an adult and its impossible not to fall for. The humor , the heart , the drama ... it's all there. I think it was Emperor who was reluctant to watch it the last time it came up ... I'm hoping he changes his mind.

Empire was my #1. Easily the best of the Trilogy and my favorite movie of all time...still. It has everything; good vs evil, romance, humor, action, drama and for a young girl...a surly Princess who could shoot a laser. The Indy Movies followed that very successful formula. I'm actually shocked it placed so low.
Also, most of the special effects used to create Empire had never been seen before even in the original Episode IV as even in those three years Lucas had changed the technology. To say movies that defined an era are overrated is pretty silly to me. Especially the SW series which changed the way movies were made. Even now you can see many of the movies use Industrial Light & Magic for their special effects.
I'm not a fan of most of the movies on this list overly as they certainly didn't define my 80's movie experience, but I can't dispute a movie like Aliens isn't a classic and doesn't deserve it's hype. Empire is nearly 40 years old and still holds up and the Star wars Universe is still going strong. Whether you like Star Wars or not, you cannot deny that Empire or RotJ doesn't deserve a place on this list. It revolutionized an entire industry and movies as we know them today.
Empire as #7 and Princess Bride as #6? I am uber curious to what everyone voted for.
1. Empire Strikes Back 2. 3. Princess Bride 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Raiders of the Lost Arc 10. 11. Goonies 12. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 13. 14. 15. Beetlejuice

Nah. No nostalgia , it just plain holds up. I had zero connection to it as a kid and loved it as an adult. Super quotable too and guys like Wallace Shawn and Andre are perfect bit players who nail their parts perfectly and play along great with the main cast.
INCONCEIVABLE!
Also this exchange had me rolling. I love Patinkin too as Inigo. Too fun.

Jim Hensen was a collaborator on the puppets, right? Yeah, a couple of Jim Henson's muppeteers worked on it. It actually took two people to do Yoda. Frank Oz did his voice, plus his arms and head. And Kathryn Mullen did his feet and legs.

I was wondering why this hadn’t shown up yet. Princess Bride is a lovely movie. It’s not really a fantasy movie at all. It’s basically a family adventure drama, but the fantasy themes in there make it awesome. And it just has a ton of loving care put into the production. It’s sweet and ridiculous and epic and sad and funny all at the same time. Andre the Giant is fucking fantastic. All the characters are great. It didn’t make my list, but it deserves a spot. It is INCONCEIVABLE that Emperor hasn’t seen this yet.

Rob Reiner also directed A Few Good Men, which is a phenomenal movie, so he gets a pretty damn good director’s score from me.

The Princess Bride is by far the single biggest brain fart from my list, and I am absolutely ashamed for forgetting it. For me it is easily a top 5 film of the 80's. It's wonderfully casted, wonderfully written, and wonderfully acted. We have talked about movies holding up over the years, this one is a shining example. I have played this for my daughter when she was 11 and she ate it up hand to mouth. If I'm fortunate enough to have grandchildren I firmly believe the same will be true with them.
Did I also mention this is one of the most quotable movies of all-time? Well no doubt that it is. I quote Inigo Montoya all the time, as well as the "To the pain" speech. Miracle Max (played to perfection by Billy Crystal) is another that I quote endlessly.
I absolutely highly recommend this movie to just about anyone.

Because I watch soaps and read comics, I commonly use the phrase he/she/they are only 'mostly dead' as we know that anyone in in comics and soaps rarely dies (for good).

Empire was my #2 behind a movie that I think might take this whole thing.
My top 3 is pretty interchangeable though.
...
I didn’t vote for Princess Bride. It’s the one super popular movie that I just don’t get. It’s not good. It’s boring. The quotable lines are all stupid. I honestly can’t figure out how this movie is so popular.
