Empire was my #2 behind a movie that I think might take this whole thing. My top 3 is pretty interchangeable though. ... I didn’t vote for Princess Bride. It’s the one super popular movie that I just don’t get. It’s not good. It’s boring. The quotable lines are all stupid. I honestly can’t figure out how this movie is so popular. TO THE PAIN !!!!

I didn’t vote for Princess Bride. It’s the one super popular movie that I just don’t get. It’s not good. It’s boring. The quotable lines are all stupid. I honestly can’t figure out how this movie is so popular. To be honest, I can see where you are coming from. A clever man can discern that the lines in this movie would only be enjoyed by a great fool. But perhaps the writers of the movie knew this. And by knowing that, they must have known that their audience does not consist of great fools. So clearly, it cannot be a movie for great fools as it is counting on them thinking it is foolish and enjoying it as a parody of sorts. But you must have known that the writers perhaps expected people to know that the lines were for great fools and accounted for this in your initial discernment!
By knowing that it was parodying foolish lines for fools, you must have thought that was indeed doubly foolish and thus strengthened your opinion that it was for fools!
However, the writers again still know that you are smart and must have known that, as a smart man, you would have still decided the lines were foolish. So therefore, the lines in the movie can't possibly be foolish! On the other hand, your name is RT. RT is the acronym for ROTTEN TOMATOES, which rated this movie a critic score of 97. And as everyone knows, 97 is the atomic number of Berkelium! Which is poisonous! So you can't possibly think it is foolish as the poison is actually in your very own words!
HAHA! You FOOL! You thought you had us, BUT YOU HAVE GIVEN EVERYTHING AWAY WITH YOUR VERY NAME!

And honestly, "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." is one of the single greatest lines in movie history. The entire climax of Montoya's revenge is poignant and hilarious...pure brilliance.

I like Ghostbusters , don't love it like others do and actually prefer the second because I'm crazy probably. Still though I can't deny it belongs near the Top 5 and is beloved and iconic piece of 80's cinema.
Bill Murray is definitely the best part though.

I'd say it's creepy how soul-matey we are, except I married the female version of UT in Wife.

So I was planning to do my own "PW 100" series in the vain of "movies Ness has never seen" with its own dedicated thread away from the normal reviewing one complete with gifs and Nessisms with Ghostbusters being my first entry since... shocker never seen it. And now that it's here, dunno if I'll ever get the ball rolling.

Ghostbusters is badass. Bill Murray is the man. It didn't make my list, but it's the best movie on this list so far (except for Blue Velvet). I think none of my movies made the list at this point (except for Blue Velvet). Hmm. Well, whatever. Ghostbusters! It's great! But yeah, it's far from the best movie in the world and 15 80's movies on my list placed solidly above it so I see where UT is coming from. I'd say it's a tad bit overrated, but in a world where so many things are massively overrated...Ghostbusters is not one I am going to complain about because it's actually pretty cool. I have not seen the sequel in earnest, but I may have caught parts of it on TV. It's on my list to watch. Emperor should watch the original though. It's well worth it. Why does it seem like Emperor hasn't seen a bunch of popular movies that are coming up here? Usually I'm the one filling that position. Does he hate the 80's? Come to think of it, he did say it was hard to put a list together. Weird.

Ghostbuster was another very late cut for me. It's terrific no doubt, but not quite listworthy for me.
The sequel is enjoyable but lands firmly in "above average" territory. Not nearly as good as the original.

Ah, Ghostbusters, a PG movie where a character dreams about a beejer from a ghost. The 80's, I tell ya.
Great flick, missed my list, few of my movies have made it.

Ghostbusters was my #2.
I remember renting it and a VHS machine from 7-11 for my 8 or 9th birthday and my best friend and I stayed up all night and watched it over and over again. A classic.

Fuck yeah.
The Terminator was my #2 and it came within an asshair of being my #1. What James Cameron was able to accomplish with this film on such a relatively small budget is nothing short of breathtaking. First time I saw the movie was in the last drive in theater as a kid and I was absolutely blown away. 30+ years later and the hairs still stand up on my neck when I watch this movie. Everything just works to perfection. Arnie is perfectly cast as The Terminator and the story flows brilliantly from one scene to the next. Biehn is also excellent as Kyle Reese, and this movie does an excellent job setting up the badass Sarah Connor we know and love in Terminator 2. I truly believe it is the greatest action film ever made, and is a top 5 science fiction movie as well. I simply cannot say enough great things about The Terminator and am stoked it placed so highly.

I didn’t vote for Terminator. It’s pretty good but wasn’t in my top 15 by a long shot. Maybe makes a top 25 list.
T2 blows it out of the water too. If I could have voted for that it would have easily been in my top 3.

Fuck yeah indeed. Terminator didn't make my list but it was close. I love it. It's miles above Ghostbusters in my book, so its placement only one above seems a bit weird. But yeah, Schwarzenegger was a fucking badass and this is about as legendary a movie can be with how well known and massively liked it is.
Plus just what a fucking cool movie and a fucking cool plot.
"I'll be back" is probably the most quoted line of all time.
The sequels held up really well too. Even something stupid like "TALK TO THE HAND" was made cool by Terminator 3.

I preferred T2 over the original but can’t deny its success and longevity. I don’t think it should have placed above Empire, Princess Bride or Aliens but JMO.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark- The fact this movie had appeal in the 80's let alone today makes it timeless since it was based of off movie serials from the 40's. Just a fantastic, well crafted tribute to a lost art in movie making that on paper would have been a corny concept in nearly any decade after the 1950's. As will be the case for most of the remaining movies on the final list I'm a sucker for films that balance fantasy, comedy and adventure. Raiders has this in spades to make it to number 4 on my list.
Empire Strikes Back- No doubt this raised the bar for movie making, had a landmark twist and drew at the box office. For me though it doesn't get much deeper than that. I'm not obsessive over every detail, character and eventual screw-ups this franchise has endured. One of the all time great sci-fi adventure movies that has casual replay value for me so it didn't make my list.
The Princess Bride- I admit I missed the boat on this one as a youngster only seeing it casually as an adult then watching it daily at one of my previous jobs. Maybe if I did grow up with it it may have placed on my list but most of the movie is a miss for me. The literal storybook aspect is a turn off for me, Andre and his diminutive partner (the guy from Young Sheldon) are a hoot though. With all the Rob Reiner talk it's a shame his true masterpiece hasn't got a mention yet and (probably) won't make the list.
Ghostbusters- This movie gets all the check marks, great fantasy concept, humor that strikes all the right notes and a story that the viewer can invest in. Completely opposite of the Princess Bride this franchise was a huge part of my childhood having most of the toys (except the elusive firehouse playset) and the cartoon being must see TV Saturday afternoons. Whenever it's on I stop what I'm doing and watch it. Hell, I've seen it 3 times just on this Christmas break alone, number 2 on my list.
The Terminator- Glad to see this place high on the list. I pretty much like the first two equally but when it comes down to the brass tacks this one gets the slight nod. I love what Cameron did with the low budget and this movie has a more frightening edge to it which I prefer over the second. It's the hi-tech slasher of it's time, number 7 for me.

Also, did you miss UT mention Stand by Me earlier or are you strangely referring to one of his two not-as-popular 80s movies as his masterpiece?

Fuck The Shining , massively overrated here by being voted as the #3 80's movie of all time. I really don't like the movie at all and will never go back to it. And it's shown up enough to where I figured we could go ahead and post an actual deserving movie this high ... one of , if not the greatest action movie of all time and the template of everything we went on to see in the 90's.
I love Die Hard , I love With a Vengeance as well. It's a shame that regardless of what side of the X-Mas debate you fall on that one of the true classics and top tier movies of it's time and genre is relegated to being the movie that everyone argues about Christmas over. It deserves more than that. I thought it had a legit shot at #1 , it did run away with the 2nd spot but our #1 was an absolute runaway.

Never got the hype for Die Hard. I mean, it's OK, but The Terminator is the king of 80s action.
I think people's low opinions on The Shining have soured me on the film without having any particularly bad feelings for it myself. End of the day, it was one of the first horror movies I watched and one of the first to genuinely terrify me on multiple occasions. Great horror film and fantastic performance from Jack Nicholson, who was perfect for the role. The only thing I dislike about The Shining is that ridiculously overrated quote that I am not going to parrot.

The Shining was good when I first saw it but don’t think I could rewatch it. Same with Die Hard.

What job possibly required viewing a movie you don’t even like daily? I am so confused. Also, did you miss UT mention Stand by Me earlier or are you strangely referring to one of his two not-as-popular 80s movies as his masterpiece? My job was to test boxes that converted standard definition signals to HD. To make sure our products were running right we had to make adjustments according to how the picture on TV looked. Our other movie of choice was Herbie with Lindsey Lohan. To answer your second question: This Is Spinal Tap- Maybe my favorite comedy of all time. A masterstroke at lampooning the hard rock/metal scene of the late 70's and early 80's with so many quotable lines. As absurd as some of it is the plight that befell Spinal Tap isn't too far off what happened to many bands in real life. It still rings true to this day with stage mishaps and numerous personnel changes that bands experience. Rob Reiner's writing was so on point, number 11 on my list. The Shining- I can see why some think it doesn't deserve it's spot with it's slow pacing and weird symbolism but this is yet another movie that is "drop everything and watch" when it's on. I agree with King that Jack Nicholson was a bit too on the nose in casting but still he takes this role and runs with it. I love how the hotel becomes a character all it's own with it's sheer mass and weird decor adding much to the sense of dread, number 5 for me. Die Hard- I echo most of UT's sentiments, just simply the best action movie ever made. For me, being a more realistic situation puts it above the more sci fi oriented stuff like Aliens, Predator and Terminator. It makes me invest that much more into Bruce Willis's everyman character going up against insurmountable odds placing it at number 3 on my list.
