I’m not sexist. There’s just not a female actor who can perform or captivate me as well as the men on my lists.

I’m not sexist. There’s just not a female actor who can perform or captivate me as well as the men on my lists. That is fair, but I would guess that they exist. You probably just haven't seen enough movies from them yet. Juliette Binoche? Grace Kelly? Katharine Hepburn? Anna Karina? THE LIST GOES ON.

The problem is that cinema by design is sexist and women are subjected to what Laura Mulvey describes as the male gaze where their physical features dominate the screen and you rarely see a plain Jane infront of the camera.
I would have actually included McDormand, that didn't dawn on me until late. Jody Foster, Toni Collette, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Glenn Close and Winona Ryder would have all gone close as well.
I may have also voted for Jennifer Love Hewitt, y'know out of solidarity.

1. James Stewart 2. Vincent Price 3. Charlton Heston 4. Philip Seymour Hoffman 5. Jack Nicholson 6. Peter Dinklage 7. Tom Hanks 8. Leonardo DiCaprio 9. James Dean 10. Steve Buscemi 11. Sean Connery 12. Billy Bob Thornton 13. Benedict Cumberbatch 14. Martin Freeman 15. Tom Hiddleston
I am very glad that a ton of people had James Stewart on their list and that he is getting some of the respect he deserves. I assume he's somewhat popular due to all the Hitchcock praise that goes around on these forums. Vincent Price needs to be the next actor everyone gets on the bandwagon for though. He is truly one of the greatest acting talents to ever live and this needs to be known. I simply demand everyone watch Witchfinder General at once!
I assume people have already seen a fair bit of Charlton Heston, but he doesn't appeal to forum dwellers much for some reason? It's obvious he is amazing. I'm interested to hear from anyone who has seen some of his movies and didn't vote for him what they feel he is lacking over more modern actors that made their list. I suppose I can understand if it's just modern relevance to newer films and what you are watching though, which is probably what it is.
Wait, where the fuck is Cary Grant? Did I take him off for some reason? Fuck me. Well, ditto for him on the Heston points.
Peter Dinklage is incredibly underrated, but I guess the only people who know that are people who have watched Game of Thrones which is a small subset of voters here. He's very good in many movies as well, but no one would have seen those if they weren't interested in him already since they aren't super popular. He didn't have too big of a role in Three Billboards either.
I definitely give the edge to Hanks over Leo. Leo is one of the best actors ever but so is Tom Hanks. The main difference is that Leo has a lot of flops (usually not his fault) whereas whenever Hanks is in something you can expect a slobberknocker. That isn't just luck though. An actor's choices of what films to appear in is relevant, first of all, but more importantly Hanks is just a real heavyweight. He has that carrying power. Even if the director or other actors are underperforming, Hanks pulls them up and elevates everyone around him. I feel like Leo is mostly good when the other actors around him are also good.
You all need to watch James Dean films too. DO IT. East of Eden. WATCH IT.
Steve Buscemi is CRAZY underrated. Sure, he's pretty ugly, but he fucking OWNS THAT. I feel like it honestly affects his popularity a lot, but he is so talented. The ugliness makes his roles as scumbags EVEN BETTER. I guess he's not an actor that many people are a fan of, so maybe that leads to him not getting any votes, but no one can deny the talent that this guy has. He's very intelligent and you can see that in his performances. He is a master of minor detail and going that extra length to really sell his characters and make them interesting.
WHERE IS SEAN CONNERY!? NO FUCKING EXCUSE THAT HE IS NOT HERE. NONE. WHATSOEVER. SHAME ON YOU ALL.
Watch the Goliath or Fargo TV shows and witness Billy Bob being far too good for TV.
The rest are some modern actors I really enjoy that are super popular, but I guess not popular enough on this forum. No qualms with them not making it. I think there are many actors better than them, but I voted for them instead thinking they might get some representation whereas others I could have voted for definitely wouldn't have.

Sean Connery is immensely entertaining, just by his accent and the way he is, but I don't think he is the caliber of actor as the names on my list. Still, he is a personal favourite and would have made my list if I had thought of him. Ditto for Vincent Price. Completely overlooked him, and he is an actor I specifically seek out. Would have been top 5.
Not seen a single Charlton Heston or James Dean film. Dean is certainly on my list. He only made three films, and they are considered to be excellent. I plan to watch them all at some point.

I realised I never posted my final list and I know you've all been loosing sleep wondering who made it. So here it is: 1. James Stewart 2. Daniel Day-Lewis 3. Brad Pitt 4. Philip Seymour Hoffman 5. Amy Adams 6. Robert De Niro 7. Adam Driver 8. Saoirse Ronan 9. James Gandolfini 10. Joaquin Phoenix 11. Scarlett Johansson 12. Steve Buscemi 13. Allison Janney 14. Bill Murray 15. Tom Hanks I went for the actors who I will go out of my way to see whatever they're in. Amy Adams is astonishing to me, and has an incredible range of types of roles she can play. Something like Enchanted wouldn't be the hit it was without her performance, yet she can do the meaty roles like The Master or Doubt or The Fighter just as well. If she's in it, I know even if the film itself is uneven, I'm going to enjoy her performance. Plus she has small roles early in her career in The Office and The West Wing, two of my favourite shows. Adam Driver is probably my favourite actor right now and I will go out of my way to see everything he's in. I'm probably one of the few people here who watched Girls, and his magnetic performance in that show just made me instantly want to know who he is and where can I see more of him. Frances Ha, Logan Lucky, Silence, While We're Young, Inside Lewlyn Davis - he stands out in all of them. Then comes Star Wars, and I know many here are big Star Wars guys and probably hate him, but as someone who just 'likes' Star Wars, he's the best thing in the new trilogy to me. An actually nuanced and interesting character who goes through real changes and grows and his performances are so well judged. (Rise of Skywalker is an abomination that ruins nearly all the characters, but he's still great in it). My two favourite performances though are Paterson, which wasn't widely seen but was so good, and Marriage Story. I'd have given him the oscar over Phoenix, that's how good I thought he was. I suppose part of the reason I like Saoirse Ronan so much is because she's Irish and to see her do so phenomenally well is encouraging. Plus she choses her roles very carefully. To be 25 or 26 and have four oscar nominations shows you're doing well. Lady Bird, Little Women, Brooklyn, and The Grand Budapest Hotel are all favourites of mine, and none of them work without her grounding performances. She's sublte, and understated, which I like, but able to make you really connect and feel. She's great. James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano may be my favourite performance of all time. What could have so easily been over-wrought or melodramatic in the wrong hands becomes this powerful, tense, layered performance where you sympathise and root for a total maniac asshole. His presence on screen is palpable and everything he does feels significant without being showy. It also feels like his film career was just taking off before he died, which is a real shame. I can definitely imagine a timeline where he does a film with Scorcesse later in life and wins an oscar. Begin Again, The Drop, In The Loop - they all showed that he was capable of more than just the Sopranos and it's a real shame he died young. Joaquin Phoenix is just a powerhouse and I thought he would have been more popular here. Take Joker, which I think is just an ok film, but with an incredible performance. If you go look at the script, you can see how much of the film's success is in his performance where he improvises so much physicality that makes it interesting. The Master is one of my favourite performances of all time, as is Her. But like so many on my list, you know that even if the film is just ok, his performance will be fantastic and worth the price of admission. I was surprised that Scarlett Johansson made my list, but as I was thimking about it, I think she's really underrated as an actress. In the MCU she does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to being the emotional core of the film. I think Endgame is nowhere near as good with a lesser actress. But Lost in Translation is wonderful, as is Under the Skin, Marriage Story, The Prestige... Even her voice work in Her and The Jungle Book adds so much to those films. Like Lionheart, I think we're all underrating Steve Buscemi. He can be a total comedic dork in some Adam Sandler movie, and then a real menacing and intimidating badass in Boardwalk Empire. I like that he is always working and pops up in all sorts of films and tv shows, always shining when he does. I was so glad he got the chance to be a leading man in Boardwalk Empire, and while the show itself is hit and miss for me, his performances were always great. Also don't miss his episode of ER - really menacing and convincing. Plus that opening scene of Reservoir Dogs makes him a legend even if he'd done nothing else after it never mind Fargo, Con Air, The Sopranos, or the hilarious Death of Stalin. Allison Janney in The West Wing is one of my favourite performances ever as well. In a show that is filled to the brim with amazing actors she manages to hold her own and be the most human of them all. Bill Murray made my list because of his unique charisma that I just find so captivating. Something like Groundhog Day or Scrooged just doesn't work without his particular eccentricities. That he tends to do mostly interesting films helps. And they're all better than Denzel The Kid,

Where’s Leo PB ?! You cost him the top spot! It was a toss up between Leo and Hanks for my number 15. I knew they'd be one and two and I didn't know how to decide. I think they're both phenomenal. It came down to whose filmography I'd choose if I could only have one, and there's just more variety with Hanks that would keep me happy forever. Plus, he might die soon, so he deserved one last accolade.
