HALIFAX -- Police say at least 18 people, including an RCMP officer, have been killed in a mass shooting incident in Nova Scotia, making it the worst mass shooting in Canadian history.

The suspect is also dead following the incident.

RCMP commissioner Brenda Lucki confirmed the number to CTV News Monday morning.

The Nova Scotia RCMP also provided an update during a news conference in Dartmouth, N.S. Sunday evening.

“Today is a devastating day for Nova Scotia and it will remain etched in the minds of many for years to come,” said commanding RCMP officer Lee Bergerman.

“What has unfolded overnight and into this morning is incomprehensible and many families are experiencing the loss of a loved one.”

Police confirmed that Const. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year veteran of the Nova Scotia RCMP, died Sunday morning while responding to the active shooter incident.

"Heidi answered the call of duty and lost her life while protecting those she served," said Bergerman. "Two children have lost their mother and a husband has lost his wife. Parents have lost their daughter and countless others lost an incredible friend and colleague."

A male RCMP officer was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His identity has not been released.

"He and his family will be supported and we will be alongside him as he begins his road to recovery," said Bergerman.

Except in that one the guy knew all his victims. I'm just assuming this guy didn't know all 16 people he killed. As a Canadian, I'm embarrassed by this and the story I shared here. For years I've felt like i could say, were better than America because that sort of stuff doesn't happen here.

I'm curious, but also kind of don't want to know, why the man would do this. If we don't find out I won't be disappointed, him being shot is not something anyone should lose sleep over.

Canada is not any better than anywhere else in the world I'm afraid. If we had the same population as the US, I'm sad to say it would likely be very much the same. We love our guns too. My friend works at Cabelas and guns and ammo were flying off the shelves just before they closed.

19 people dead so far. This guy apparently had it planned for some while. He was dressed in a Police uniform so people would have trusted him. He started with his ex and her new bf. He killed people in their homes and cars. Parents in front of their children. Just horrific.

I can't imagine what that community and the families of those people are going through.

The US has the 10th highest rate of gun deaths in the world after controlling for population. Higher than most of the countries we invade in the middle east and higher than most countries run by African gangs of armed warlords. Only really the countries that people are fleeing to the US from in South America have higher rates. Limit that to solely homicides and we only drop to 16th.

Think about it the Middle East and Africa have lower rates of gun violence than the US despite active armed conflicts. 12k people die from guns in the US each year not including suicide. Include suicide and the number goes up to 36k. 100k people are shot each year in the US. This shit is not normal. And since papa took office we are seeing a slow return to late era crack epidemics numbers of gun murders.

People with guns will use them to kill people and with the average american owning 1.2 guns there is no shortage of supply. In almost no other country can you get milk, eggs, bread and a box of .22 rounds at the same store.

I don't think there's anything wrong with owning a gun. The reason behind why people want them usually is.

This one always bothers me because people are quick to point out "only the crooks will have them then!" which is not true, but a lot of the mass shooters obtained theirs legally so the idea that some shy loner is doing a deal on the black market is just not true.
