Home Alone did not make the top 15. I'm a little disappointed but since I did not vote I can not really complain.

Well I'll tell ya. If this tells you anything, it's that the 90s will be well represented when we do the Greatest Movies of All Time list.

Home Alone did not make the top 15. I'm a little disappointed but since I did not vote I can not really complain. Aw crap, I forgot Home Alone. It was probably a subconscious thing where I excluded holiday movies. Privates Parts popping up on a list is a nice nostalgic pick as well. That was a regular rental back in the day, prime Jenna Jameson ftw.

This would have been my list if I had have got one in.
1. Ghost 2. Boogie Nights 3. Fight Club 4. Ed Wood 5. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me 6. Trainspotting 7. Magnolia 8. Primal Fear 9. Wayne's World 10. The Crow 11. Jackie Brown 12. Starship Troopers 13. Happiness 14. Goldeneye 15. Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey With There's Something About Mary being a very late cut. I know movies like Shawshank and Forest are more acclaimed, but these are the movies that either resonated or moved me the most. I didn't really consider any animated movies, but if I did The Iron Giant, Rescuers Down Under, We're Back: A Dinosaur Story would have all featured highly.
Damn and I just realised I left off Eyes Wide Shut and Barton Fink. Eh, close enough.

Every time I think about making a belated list somebody pops up with a Groundhog Day or Ghost that I completely forgot about. Now I'm glad I missed out on this one. Narrowing it down to just 15 would have given me a headache. Top 4 would have been....
1-2 Shawshank Redemption or Big Lebowski depending on what sort of mood I was in the day I made my list. 3. Wayne's World 4. Forrest Gump 5-15 ??

I put no time into this, so let's consider this a "if UT put a gun to your head, as he is wont* to do, and gave you 10 mins to create a best of the 90s list" list. *I had always assumed this expression was "as he is want to do", which never sounded right to me, but just checked and wont is an adjective meaning "accustomed to". The more you know.

Maybe my impulsive idea to split the 90s countdown into two parts (90-94, 95-99) wasn't such a bad idea after all...

The moment you’ve all been waiting for. Here’s my 15: 1. Goodfellas 2. Three Colours Blue 3. Toy Story 4. Seven 5. Three Colours Red 6. La Haine 7. The Usual Suspects 8. Before Sunrise 9. Reservoir Dogs 10. Fight Club 11. The Big Lebowski 12. LA Confidential 13. Beauty and the Beast 14. The Truman Show 15. Boogie Nights Glad to see that Strobe, not only had two of the three colours films, but that he had the right one at the top. Three Colours Red is the answer to what should have won best picture over Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank. If people are interested in a different sort of film I think most PW people would really enjoy La Haine. It’s about three lads in working class France after a riot had taken place. It’s super accessible and a great introduction to World Cinema.

We know about Red and Blue, but what is the third colour?
Three Colours White? Three Colours Green?
What is this mystery third film, and why is it bad?

Tell me more about Three Colours. They're three films made by Polish director Krzystof Kieslowski, two in French and one in Polish. The colours are the colours of the French flag and the themes are the french national themes of liberty, equality, and brotherhood - although only very loosely. Blue is unsurprisingly fairly melancholy and features one of my favourite performances from Juliette Binoche dealing with grief. White is more of a black comedy, taking a complete tonal shift and dealing with a woman seeking a divorce because her husband doesn't satisfy her sexually.. It's most people's least-favourite, but it's probably the easiest watch and is still very good. Red is the hardest to explain (and it's been a good few years since I've seen it) but it's about a relationship between a young model and an older judge that ties the three films together. Kieslowski was nominated for Best Director at the Oscars that year which shows the impact the films had - it's not very often at all a foreign language film picks up a big nomination like that. They're certainly films with a slower more contemplative pace, so I wouldn't recommend them to everyone like I did with La Haine. But if you're the sort of person who enjoys a character study and lots of the story-telling being done visually rather than narratively you'll really enjoy them. This countdown has convinced me it's time for a rewatch.
