It's amplified here because voting is mandatory and people will go with the most bizarre reasoning. The young people heavy inner city seats in Melbourne goes to the "Greens" because The environment is super-important" Except the Greens are radical hard-left Soicalists and most of the people who vote for them would have no idea.

Nobody at our rallies could tell you what they are upset about except to repeat the catch cries of Twitter. We could be the most politically ignorant country on Earth. Ya Outback Jacks can have 1b. America dominate the ignorance space in all forms, but especially politics. America is 1a ignorant. All day, every day, for all the days.

While I don’t disagree, I don’t think the Greens have any where near the power the conservatives like to pretend they do when making them out as the evil socialists with their made up conspiracy to rid old white men of their super... or whatever Sky News and the Libs are spewing this month. Is it so wrong to discuss climate change?

I know you have an agenda against young left wingers Incy, but I'm not buying you using the Greens as the main example of the party benefiting from people voting for them for no/contradictory reasons for a second. I would bet you anything that a Greens voter would be infinitely more tuned in on the party's policy that the average voter for the two major parties - for the very mere fact that they bothered to look into what anyone was proposing. Obviously there are more Greens policies beyond the environment that appeal to those in Fitzroy and Abbotsford like increasing newstart and youth allowance, medicare including dental and mental health services, closing offshore detention, writing a treaty with Indigenous Australia, and increasing rights for LGBTIQ+ people.
If all you're saying is that social issues matter more to young people then fiscal policy then yeah sure, that's fine.

This is what I hear from most people every election:
“I donkey voted, I don’t care”
After results
“What _____ won?! Fuck this country!”
My best mate who is aboriginal came with me to an early voting station one election and Pauline Hanson happened to be there..so he made sure to get the photo op

We don’t see extremism from our politicians as you might in the US and if we do, it’s from people like Hanson who will never sit in the big chair.

I don't know if we will ever get out of this. Going by the suburbs affected and the reference to family gatherings, I expect a lot of this is coming from immigrant communities that may not understand the risks so well.

Pair of studies suggest that the antibodies fade for about half of people within 3 months. Linked the Nature study below and there is a larger study on medrxiv that confirms the findings. Does not appear to be overlaps of author names so assume they are independent studies. www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0965-6If they hold, then people infected in the first wave likely no longer have antibodies.

Not content with the fact that the BLM protests didn’t seem to have caused the outbreaks that the pearl clutches were predicting/hoping for, you’re now going to take a completely baseless shot at immigrants for this? White people definitely don’t have family gatherings.

I'm confused. Is this the corona thread now? c, help clarify for the dense one here — is that good or bad news? And thanks for calling that out, @admin. Seemed like thinly veiled racism, but what do I know.

iNCY the entire state relaxed a few weeks ago like nothing was happening. I'd blame the white middle class Karens of the world who think it's ok to drag their entire ugly families to the supermarket, host dinner parties, BBQs, and everyone involved with the AFL for suggesting it's ok to play sport again etc before any talk of blaming immigrants. The protesters are equally to blame.

As much as I hate Karens, is that term sexist? Or do we all get to overlook that at the moment?
Glad no one I like is named Karen.

Nobody at our rallies could tell you what they are upset about except to repeat the catch cries of Twitter. We could be the most politically ignorant country on Earth. America says "hold my Foster's" because I guarantee you that it's always been worse here. Both wings of the bird are batshit crazy and they're dragging every one down with them. There doesn't seem to be enough room for 'tweeners' over here. I'm not leaving this apartment though and I'd love for someone to try and shame me for it. If there wasn't a, oh I dunno, mass pandemic going on, I'd probably be out there in support of peaceful protest. Destruction of property is not something I've ever been a big fan of. Just like burning the flag, you lose the philosophical battle just on the basis of the action itself; any healthy forum of discussion might as well fly out the window. I wish this was a more coordinated movement, most people don't seem to have a goal in mind, they either just want to re-write the bad parts of history, start a revolution or both. It makes me sound like a bootlicker but we don't even stand a chance against our own army, not unless we're able to circumvent the majority of the army to support their own people. Otherwise, we're going to be left like the Romans who walked by crumbling aquedects and infrastructure only to realize that times had been better in the past, for better or worse.

The message from the ABC seems to be incongruous with the actions.
I think the reduction in coverage of news in regional areas is of some significant concern (especially with the future of the AAP up in the air). The location of staff isn't necessarily the issue - it doesn't matter if you've got 75% of staff outside the head office if you've cut off channels for which their content can be broadcast.
It's disappointing that given some recent criticism of the ABC not featuring enough diversity on some of it's flagship programming like Outsiders, they are cutting one of their most diverse divisions. That again, doesn't correspond with the move to create more content in different languages - and that's aside from the question of why they are encroaching on SBS's grass. When you put stuff out there like that you'll obviously get people calling for ABC & SBS to merge - but I fail to see how less voices in the media can be considered a positive in any way.

It's probably not a matter of more or less voices, but where they are deployed. The ABC mandate seems a bit corrupted to the point it doesn't seem to know if it should be reporting the news or offering "diversity" content and editorials. It would probably make sense to focus on reporting the news, all the news wherever it is from and spending less time on the diversity woke pieces and editorials that appeal to a tiny percentage of the population. Media is a tough one and we are more and more moving to a user pays system. If I had my way I would defund all sports and arts and let them be user paid services and let survive what people want.

I think you're treading dangerously entirely relying on the public to decide what they want. The 14 cent joke has probably been driven into so many heads over the years that a lot of average punters would probably say that they'd be quite happy to see the ABC disappear - completely oblivious to the clear benefits that it provides like their emergency broadcasts during natural disasters (more important than ever) as well as some of the less obvious ones like the jobs that are created down the supply chain for the creation of its content.
I also don't think that reporting the news and offering diversity is an either/or proposition. I don't think that commissioning content in languages other than English is something the ABC needs to be doing, but representing the stories and perspectives of those people absolutely is. Sure, the landscape is changing with social media and the internet - but it is still important that we have mass media platforms presenting the opinions of minorities to counteract the Murdoch press.
