12. 2001: A Space Odyssey 17. Planes, Train and Automobiles 21. Clerks 40. Back To The Future Part II46. Braveheart 56. Full Metal Jacket 67. Falling Down 79. Logan 83. Scarface 87. Apollo 13 I can see where UT is coming from when liking II more than the first at times. Not only did it provide an interesting take on the future but it was also brave enough to go back to the first film and see those events from a different perspective which I thought was really cool. Michael J Fox puts in a tremendous performance as different iterations of his character and also other family members, too bad Crispin Glover was a dick to the producers so we couldn't really see more of him. Also the unsung hero of the entire franchise Thomas F. Wilson was stretching out his acting chops as evil Biff, who could have made my villain's list . Why this guy vanished after the hoopla of the franchise died down I don't know, tremendous actor. Perhaps they wanted to typecast him as a bully in every film? A more than worthy sequel which paid tribute to the first film but added so many great things to the world they were building.

141. Blazing Saddles
140. Back to the Future Part II
139. Punch Drunk Love
I didn't have any of these on my list but probably would put B2TFII and PDL on a Top 200 list. I haven't seen Blazing Saddles in a long, long time, but I'd probably rank it on my Top 100 in the 80's.

Correct. My #1. Punch-Drunk Love is my all-time favorite movie. I don’t know where to start but let’s go. It’s Adam Sandler for sure. Until this point AS was Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore for me. I was never much of a Happy fan.. but as a teenage Billy was my go-to movie. I suffered from loneliness and depression in my teenage years and Billy Madison was a movie I’d watch every day (sometimes twice a day). Somewhere in there I grew up a bit and I probably saw PDL when I was 17. And guys, Adam Sandler in PDL is me. This quirky and awkward man is like a theatrical version of myself. He has these sisters that just pick at him. The scene where he is at one of their houses for dinner.. you just feel this tension building when one of them says.. “What’s that name we use to have for you?” He is embarrassed and plays it off like this really suave and smooth man. Then she remembers “Gay boy?” And then like little chickens they just start saying and repeating it. “Hey Barry remember when we used to call you guy boy?” In this little burst of anger, he busts out their glass sliding door and ruins their dinner party. Then the scenes with the Healthy Choice promotional materials. Barry figures out that Healthy Choice has partnered with an airline to give you travel miles if you buy their product. Except the pudding cups have codes on the lids of all four of the cups. He calls Healthy Choice to tell them about their flub. “Are you aware that the potential reward is greater than the cost of the original purchase.” And Healthy Choice didn’t care. Which eventually leads to my favorite movie scene of all time. He gets so excited about the travel miles and while his employee is carting all of the pudding he starts dancing in the super market. I have no idea why this scene made the movie but dang I’m so glad it did. It is so sincere and honest. Barry dancing so weirdly out of excitement. I learned this funny dance and I basically do it every time I get excited about something. Also should note how much I love that blue suit he wears. Other things: the harmonium and car wreck scene. Which isn’t that important except watching him running while carrying it. He has his coffee cup on it and balances it there all the way until he has to turn into the garage and it bounces across parking lot but he leaves it there? Him wrecking the bathroom stall because his sister had told Lena something embarrassing about him. The four blonde brothers. The mattress king. It all wraps up to this really fun and extremely awkward romance dramas. Then there is this gem: While I don’t care for the profanity in this scene.. I can’t help by giggle at PSH screaming “shut shut shut up” at Barry. Then Barry goes to Mattress king’s shop to confront him about hurting his girl and when he gets there.. he’s still holding the other end of the phone. Sandler has the performance of a lifetime for me. He is this goof ball who is extremely awkward and feels out of place in his little world. He has the pent up anger about people taking advantage of and embarrassing him and lashes out. I relate so much with his character. It’s a truly perfect movie for me. 1. Punch-Drunk Love 13. Deathly Hollows Part 2 37. Blazing Saddles 40. Skyfall 48. Fellowship of the Ring 53. Grease 58. A Christmas Story 86. Avengers 97. Wizard of Oz Honorable Mentions & Misses Uncle Buck (Miss) Sweet Home Alabama (Miss) Planes, Trains, & Automobiles (Miss) Ferris Beuler’s Day Off (Mention)

Almost certain I know what this is. Haven't seen it. One of my bigger oversights, but I am slowly getting there with that era of film. I think this image shows my guess to big Simpsons fans, without giving it away to those who aren't.

Fantastic post, JTJ. It's wonderful when a movie connects with us on a deeply personal level. I can't say I've ever related to a movie character that strongly. Maybe I'll find my Punch-Drunk Love one day. This is the one good Adam Sandler film, according to some people. I disagree. There are zero good Adam Sandler films. What if Sandler took Kurt Angles role in Warrior? Movie ruined, completely inplausible, 0/10. It's a funny thought though.

Good guess by Strobe and Emp.
I haven't seen it yet , it is the oldest movie on my to watch list though. Heard nothing but great things - though I'm not a huge Jimmy Stewart fan I think I'll still get around to this one.

8. Matchstick Men 12. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington 14. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid 15. Silver Linings Playbook 27. Spirited Away 29. Logan 32. Elf 44. In Bruges 60. Catch Me If You Can 69. Paranormal Activity
Been a while since a film from my list has appeared.
I'm a sucker for courtroom dramas. I'm also a sucker for James Stewart, especially when he's playing the role of a kind-hearted chap who's in over his head. He was born to be that character. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington combines these themes into a mesmerising and sometimes tragic plot, with an all time great conclusion.

I should have had more classic films on my list as I grew up with them. I have seen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington more than once but it wouldn't likely show up until about #150ish on a list of mine. There's about 50 more from that era I like more.

Big Trouble in Little China I think is the only real big hole in my Carpenter viewing. Probably similar to Russell as well. Need to get on it soon , I know it's a pretty beloved cult classic. By the way Emperor. That's Kurt Russell.

First one from my list in a long time.
5. The Tree of Life (2011, Terrence Malik) 15. Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott) 19. The Night of the Hunter (1955, Charles Laughton) 30. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001, Peter Jackson)
43. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939, Frank Capra)
I’m incredibly sentimental at heart, and so a film like this which is just pure feel-good, is always going to win me over. It would be an interesting watch right now in a time when political life is so divisive and so ugly, to watch something so pure and wholesome - it would either be inspiring or depressing. I could watch Jimmy Stewart read the yellow pages, but he’s so powerful in this because he’s so earnest and you believe in what he believes in completely and he gives one of the all time great impassioned speeches in cinema history. It’s entirely free of pretentious and it isn’t ground-breaking and maybe hard to watch in our cynical age - but for me it’s a wonderful escape and a joy to watch. It’s Sorkin before Sorkin, but without any need to be cool or slick. Pure Capracorn at its finest - which if like me you love, will give you such joy to watch. Really pleased its made the list.
50. In Bruges (2008, Martin McDonagh) 68. Zodiac (2007, David Fincher) 100. Skyfall (2012, Sam Mendes)

Only reason I didn't rank Big Trouble higher is because I haven't seen it in a while. This movie is one of the greatest urban fantasies ever made, a completely fun romp through Chinatown that holds up very well. It's also had a pretty big impact on other properties like Mortal Kombat, and Shadowrun.

Does it make John Carpenter's Mt. Rushmore?.....not so sure, lets see.
Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York..and yes Big Trouble in Little China. If anyone wants to put They Live somewhere in there I will not fault them.
For Kurt Russell..probably not. I have The Thing, Tombstone, Escape from New York and Backdraft for him.

Big Trouble is #182 on my big list, so wasn't close to making it, but it is a great and incredibly rewatchable movie. So much fun. Jack Burton (Russell) as the white sidekick in a martial arts film who thinks he is and acts like the protagonist is a classic character.
I could see an argument for Assault on Precinct 13 for Carpenter's Rushmore as well. Halloween and The Thing are definites. I'd probably also go for Escape from New York and Big Trouble, but both Assault and They Live have cases that could be made..

#31 Big Trouble In Little China Storytime
Of all the movies on my list this is the one I did the biggest 180 on. For many years I loathed this movie to the point where it would have made a Least Favorite Movies list.
I think my biggest problem was I simply didn't get, and didn't like, Jack Burton's character. I saw him as this loudmouthed, largely incompetent phony badass who was supposed to be the film's top babyface. I did not care about Jack Burton or his stupid banter about his stupid Pork Chop Express. I thought he sucked. Now, of course, I understand his character. But it took almost two decades before a light bulb went off and I finally got it.
My brother got in the habit of repeating himself towards the end of his life. It was not uncommon for him to tell me Big Trouble was his all time favorite movie....three times in the course of one conversation....during pretty much every conversation we had.
So imagine you're me growing up and you're brother is constantly watching this movie you can't stand. Even an OK movie would start to lose a lot of luster when you're watching it over and over again. But a movie you already hate is only going to become even more hated. I was not a total glutton for punishment. So I rarely stayed for more than 5 minutes before sulking off muttering something about "stupid Jack Burton" or "dumb lampshade hat guys" under my breath. This movie was cornball central with an unlikeable lead protagonist.
Yet it's cult following only grew over the years. Pretty soon, it wasn't just my brother I was arguing with, but other friends who were appalled that I did not like "the classic" Big Trouble In Little China.
Anyway, at some point the aforementioned lightbulb finally did go off and I went from hating this film to liking it to loving it. I even grew to get a kick out of ol' Jack Burton. Sure, Wang Chi is more badass, and Egg is infinitely more intelligent, and THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT, BAKER, YA BIG DUMMY! But! I do like how Jack had one total badass move which came about organically through his greatest attribute (reflexes). That was a clever bit.
Anyway, this is a quirky movie that just works. The cast does a good job. Yes, even Kurt Russell as Jack Burton. Jack's buddies are all good in their roles. David Lo Pan is a suitably creepy villain. Big Trouble has a lot of classic lines and you gotta love that pure 80s John Carpenter song that plays during the end credits.
My brother always swore those Mortal Kombat characters were influenced by Big Trouble In Little China. While I admitted they were similar, I chalked it up to coincidence. My brother was just being a homer for his favorite movie. Well, TIL those MK characters really were influenced by Big Trouble when I did some research after LT's post.
I put some sentimental objects in my brother’s coffin when he passed away last year. One was an LJN action figure of his childhood hero- Hulk Hogan. Another was a DVD of his all time favorite movie- Big Trouble In Little China.

Honestly this is true for pretty much every John Carpenter film
