All Tony wanted to do was promote his international broadcast partners and talk about life as an internet wrestling fan in the 90s.
Tony needs to learn the art of a non-answer from the No. 1 Khan in all of Professional Wrestling.

Tony admitting he uses Cagematch ratings to gauge whether a show is good or not is very concerning.

Tony admitting he uses Cagematch ratings to gauge whether a show is good or not is very concerning. Dynamite did 824,000 (the lowest since November) and Rampage 375,000. But sure, use Cagematch. Rampage launched with +700,000 and a peak of 1.1m. Never has a program tanked so hard, so fast.

Like, why is the boss crapping all over his lead announcer for no reason?

Wrestling fans defaulting to thinking everything is a work when it’s stupid is one of the worst modern tropes. Everything Jericho says is a work, everything FTR say is a work, everything MJF says is a work (that one is probably mostly true), the Punk scrum was a work, Cody’s babyface promos were a heel work (he’s still turning heel any day guys!). It’s the most eye roll inducing shit.

It’s the most eye roll inducing shit. If anyone in AEW says something stupid it's " you're just not smart to get it " that was the original AEW fanboy response. What we have learnt recently, TK believes he's at war with WWE. WWE is meddling with his toys, and in the last week, we've learnt " they're out to get him " I've seen Dynamite this week, and I've seen Elimination Chamber. If AEW is at war with WWE, Tony Khan is the boy throwing rocks as the war machine rolls in.

If we're going to compare WWE and AEW shows, then it's fairer to compare Elimination Chamber against the upcoming Full Gear. Or the last Smackdown against the last Dynamite, neither of which were particularly good.
Besides that, what is clear is that WWE is on a strong uphill trend (it always it at this time of year, but 2023 is markedly stronger than previous years), while AEW is going in the opposite direction. I haven't watched the last two Dynamites because I'm honestly not really interested in anything AEW is doing right now. MJF vs Danielson started off strong but they really killed it with this endless gauntlet of inevitability.

It's a completely different mindset from each company.
WWE sells Premium Live Events (which encompasses the actual event, the theatre it brings to a city, the experience) The television product is a 3/2 hour advertisement for the big show.
AEW is focused on and books to pop the TV ratings week on week. Short term thinking. TK would be ok with a near empty arena if the ratings still hit 900,000. But they don't.
It's like MCU vs DCEU.
The MCU spends years building towards an Avengers movie and it a cultural phenomenon. DC just throw Justice League on the table, and everyone is like " What? Why should I care? "
Realistically you can't compare AEW to WWE is any fashion. AEW can't produce an overall sports entertainment production like a WWE PLE. They can put together a wrestling show, but not of the grandeur of WWE.

I don't even think it's about ratings for AEW. I think they're more concerned about match quality and branding themselves the 'good' wrestling company that they sacrifice compelling television to make each show the best wrestling card it can be. That's why they have a dozen titles, so they can have at least one marquee match per show.
The down-side is that even with the expansive roster it feels like the show hits the same beats week in, week out. Every now and then you'll get a PPV quality episode followed by a weaker episode since they blew their load on that show.
Meanwhile RAW & SmackDown vary in quality and even segment to segment the show can be all over the place. However as long as their stars continue to shine and there's a road-map for Wrestlemania or SummerSlam they're not going to sweat it.
The concerning thing is that when AEW has branched out and tried to do something big it's gone down like a lead balloon. Cast your minds back to The Dark Order or recently to The Firm and how that angle has only hurt MJF.
I think there is space for a sports-based wrestling company but the presentation has to be logical. Too often AEW relies on tropes that never existed in Pro Wrestling until the WWE established them. That's one disappointment I have, this should have been an opportunity to look at the product and say this is dumb we won't do that.
Instead AEW goes this is dumb, let's make fun of that and do it even worse, so we have stupid segments where guys are breaking their necks watching a monitor backstage because they just have to reference the WWE.

I'd be concerned about match quality too Big Pete, because the average quality in AEW is fucking awful. When you have to threaten social media accounts to remove clips of the ugly botches....

I agree that AEW wrestling tends to be very sloppy but I don't know if they can fix it. AEW has an indie style of working that's inherently sloppy but fans are willing to turn a blind eye because of the effort the wrestlers put in. Fans understand that talent are going over and beyond to entertain them so when they hit a complicated spot that makes up for all the other mistakes. The concern is that you have talent that should know better take the audience for granted and do things like blade in full view of the camera. That's something that they should be held accountable of, but there's nobody there who will grill them.

I don’t think ratings are an issue either. Everything drops over time, including WWE most years. It still outranks almost anything else in cable on Wednesdays. The far bigger issue is selling tickets. They did 3k in Laredo a week or two ago. That’s a small market but those are small company numbers. I’ve said this before but this is the biggest test of any wrestling promoter - can you make stars? People assume it’s easy when WWE do it but they have perfected a marketing machine over decades. It’s not an easy thing.

The ratings don't exactly perform well either Todd. There's programming on Wednesday doing well into 3 million total viewers compared to AEW Dynamite's 800,000. They perform well in comparison to other shows that night in " the demo " with recently 0.27 - but, not exactly great in comparison to RAW or Smackdown which does 0.6 - WWE, a product that is seen as being " PG " and appealing to families, not the key 18-34 demo. The data says otherwise, total viewership aside, AEW has less than half the viewership in the key 18-34 year old demo as Smackdown for example. So for all these tweets in celebration of these apparently victories in the demo, it is absolute bullshit. And just a reminder, Rampage made its debut with 740,000 and peaked at 1.1 million but hasn't seen above 600,000 in over 12 months and recently... 375,000. Rampage has seen 500,000 maybe a handful of times in the last 12 months, and consistently does a 0.1 in the key demo. Yikes. Dynamite has flatlined and Rampage has lost a significant percentage of its audience in less than 2 years. I don't know, maybe they don't care about ratings...

I think comparisons to WWE are silly. It’s not apples to oranges, but it is apples to giant apples. Have at it though. The owner of the company is such a mark for the the idea of a war that he brings all this on himself and I’ve got no sympathy for him. He deserves to be mocked.

That's the reality show that's replacing Rhodes To The Top.
Imagine if All Out was the pilot?
It'll be interesting if Tony has a different announcement for Wednesday's show. Hopefully something not ROH-related...
