Game Names: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Release Date: November 18th, 2022

I know we briefly discussed the new Pokémon games, earlier in the year during the Pokémon Presents showcase, however, that also involved discussion on non-gen nine related Pokémon news as well. Anyways, the Scarlet & Violet games will be released in a few short months, so I figured it would be good to have a thread dedicated specifically for the games, to talk about any upcoming news that will no doubt be announced (IE new Pokémon, gameplay footage, etc.).

What we know so far...

The starter Pokémon, as always follows the grass/water/fire type formula (Emperor, if you want something different, I'd recommend checking out a game called Nexomon Extinction). In the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games, those Pokémon will be Sprigatito a feline grass-type Pokémon, Quaxly a duck-like water-type Pokémon and of course Fuecoco a crocodilian fire-type Pokémon.

Besides the gen nine starters being revealed, they have also announced the two new legendary Pokémon to the long-running series (see the first picture in this post). Pokémon Scarlet will be getting a reptilian Pokémon named Koraidon, meanwhile, the Violet version of the game will be getting a robotic snake-like creature named Miraidon.

Outside of the starters and legendary Pokémon, we've also seen the reveals of Lechonk the stout Pokémon, Pawmi the rodent-like Pokémon and Smoliv a Pokémon resembling an olive.

The characters in the game include your rival Nemona and the Pokémon Professor(s). The two versions of the game feature different professors, with Professor Sada appearing in Pokémon Scarlet and Professor Turo appearing in Pokémon Violet. Given their outfits as well as the legendary Pokémon for each game, there has been a lot of speculation about a past vs. future story arc.

Returning Pokémon

The following returning Pokémon have been seen in promotional material (not including unseen evolutionary relatives, although it stands to reason, every stage for a Pokémon would be in the game): Pikachu, Venonat, Meowth, Psyduck, Magnemite, Shellder, Gengar, Flaaffy, Hoppip, Blissey, Larvitar, Pelipper, Swablu, Seviper, Bagon, Starly, Combee, Drifloon, Lucario, Petilil, Hisuian Zoroark, Cryogonal, Fletchling, Talonflame, Flabébé, Clauncher, Toxapex, Lurantis, Bounsweet, Chewtle, Coalossal, and Stonjourner.

While we haven't seen Eevee shown for this game (as of yet), the last Eeveelution we got was almost a decade ago in Sylveon. Honestly, it was a wasted opportunity to not introduce a steel and dragon type Eeveelutions in Sword and Shield, so I'm hoping that will be rectified in the new Scarlet and Violet games.

Not that I probably will play it but hopefully you can get different clothes in game because short sleeve shirt and tee doesn't look good.

I can't wait, this is going to be the first generation where I'm really going to dive into it from ground zero and get into the competitive scene. Typically I play off and on until I complete the Pokedex, this time I'm basically going to live on Smogon.

4 Player Co-Op sounds sweet, we'll have to have a PW session.

Otherwise there isn't a ton to go on. It's been a fairly typical build-up with the starters and box legendaries being revealed. I don't think there's much to discuss until the next Direct.

I'm curious if the remaining 63 Pokemon from previous generations will appear. We still have a situation where if you want to play as Greninja you're going to have to play an entirely different series which is really odd.

I am ready for this. I wanted to go Violet due to the legendary but I really prefer the female professor who seems to be Scarlet exclusive. I think I am going fire starter just because I didn't do one in a while, since I wanna say Fennekin of Gen VI.

More things change more they stay the same. And I love it either way.

They finally added coop? Been saying they should have done that ages ago.

Yeah it's the first time in a mainline entry.

They did have co-op with Let's Go which was one of the big draws for the game.

I spose Sword and Shield had co-op as well, albeit it was limited to raids.

Nice, I'll definitely have to tune in and give that a watch.

Biggest takeaways out of this for Pokemon Violet/Scarlet........


1) Fidough looks like a boss, this is gotta be the dog pokemon of this gen.
2) This crystal form thing looks cool just from a graphical standpoint. Curious how much this plays into competitiveness.
3) The return of the gym battles which is great........two other major storypoints as well so it isn't just battling gyms to get to Victory Road
4) Different pokemon exclusive to the region like Wooper/Quagsire
5) They are giving you the legendaries to use as a means to transport. I have no idea if they are a means to actually battle because if so, that's kinda broken   The Violet legendary exclusive is actually using his body to transport you such as jetpack or wheels, the Scarlet one seems extremely old school ....almost prehistoric like.

It seems like a lot of leaks online were true and they revealed Terastal form changes, Paldea, Cetitan, Fidough and Paldean Wooper etc. before the Press Conference.

Terastal changes appear to be similar to Dynamax changes, except you can also change typing depending on the Terra type of the Pokemon, giving the trainer more coverage on a need to know basis.

Arcanine, Sawsbuck, Houndoom, Snorunt, Hunchkrow, Gogoat, Cufant, Slaking, Sunflora, Cacturne, Donphan, Dragonite, Pineco, Mismagius, Beartic, Pachirisu, Pyukumuku, Sylveon, Elektross, Scizor, Hatterene, Noivern, Esicue, Hydreigon, Hariyama, Azumarill, Poltageist, Hippowdon, Rotom, Luxio, Mudbray, Gardevoir and some of their pre-evos were all confirmed to be returning as well.

By my count that's 148 returning Pokemon you can just about confirm given pre-evos and other evos.

The Worlds Trailer revealed the pre-evolution of the box legendaries who has a sick ability that automatically summons substitute and switches Pokemon. The trailer showcased a couple of moves and held items, with the only other confirmation being Shroomish and Breloom to make it 150 returning Pokemon.

What the heck is this thing?

Smeargle finally getting some competition when it comes to the fine arts.

The latest trailer goes into more detail about the choose your own adventure mode. You're free to take on the three main objectives of the game which is take on Team Star (this game's Team Rocket), hunt mythical/legendary/titan Pokemon and complete Victory Road. The game showed off a few new Pokemon, but the only one that was referenced by name was Klawf a titanic crab Pokemon. A new gym leader was revealed in the trailer, Brassius the grass gym leader. He has a Smoliv and a Sudowoodo that Terestal transforms into a grass type. Sudowoodo, Komala and Hypno were both revealed as available in the game.

We are just days away from Scarlet and Violet dropping.

The place where Wife and I pre-ordered the double pack is doing a midnight release, I'm tempted to show up for it but I doubt my old ass could handle it, especially with work the next day. Which versions is everyone getting? I'm going Scarlet while the Wife is getting Violet. What about starters, who are you going with? As for me, I'm going with the crocodilian fire-type Pokémon known as Fuecoco.

Hopefully, Larvitar will be available sooner rather than later, so I can get Tyranitar ASAP.

Bought Pokemon Scarlet, can't wait for it to come tomorrow.

I'm picking up both versions and I'll be playing Scarlet first. A friend of mine reached out about version exclusives so I told him I'd have him covered. If I had a preference, Violet has the better version exclusives but I don't think it's as pronounced as Sword/Shield where Sword had far and away the best Pokemon.

This is the first time I've mapped my team out as well. I didn't go ridiculously deep with it, but I can't wait to play through and share what I came up with.

For sure Big Pete, and the Wife will say the same thing, but we love the fact both of us are big into the Pokemon franchise. I know it is a simple thing and not really a big deal compared to other things in life, however, being able to experience the games with her, as well as trading the version exclusives with her (Sword/Shield, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, and now Scarlet/Violet), just adds to the fun.

I've ordered Violet. I'll probably pick Sprigatito as my starter!

So the Wife talked me in to going for the midnight release... the line up is fucking insane.

2022 I thought Saints Row would have won this but nope, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet  

Yeah game has so many bugs and is framey as fuck at times. Like stop motion bad. Still looks like a ton of fun to play if you do not mind the jank.

It's really not well made. The framerate feels like it's about 7fps at times, the popup is N64-era stuff and there are all kinds of random graphical glitches.

I keep seeing people trying to blame the Switch hardware, but like...Xenoblade Chronicles 2 came out five years ago and is absolutely in another league presentation-wise.

The MC's mom is really hot though.

I just had a battle against a totally invisible Lechonk.

The battle after that started with the ground totally glitching away and turning into a solid block of blue.

It's a mess!

How did you know it was a Lechonk if you couldn't see it?

My guess, is cause it still showed the Pikemons name as well as its ho, etc. Although, I'm not @aaron so I obviously don't k ow for sure.

Yeah, battles always show the name (and level and gender and whatever) of your Pokemon and the opponent!
