What these people do not seem to get is it is not trans people harassing them. Most trans people just want nothing to do with this as they do not want more toxicity. The people attacking streamers want people to think trans people are awful. That is goal, to get people to hate trans people.

Do you think all these boycotting has just given the game lowkey publicity? I swear if not for this I probably wouldn't have even heard of it.

How can you discuss the controversy over this game without mentioning JK & trans stuff? I’m not even into Harry Potter and I’m tempted to buy this again after all the incessant bitching about it. Streamers are just e-beggars so they don’t have morals to begin with anyway. I wanted to more so discuss the gaming stuff pertaining to this game rather than falling into a rabbit hole of this being another USA Politics Thread but after seeing a page of this, the convo has been good. I was more so interested in making the thread because it's caused such a civil war amongst gamers. I disagree with c that there's a good portion of LGTBQ+ people who are going after streamers. Lately, people have been trying to spoil the game for streamers as revenge which is so petty. Game is selling like hotcakes and is a massive boon on Twitch so as @ness said, the boycott has sort of ignited more of this game to sell well as people have gone on record of buying the game out of sheer spite for the boycott cries. I follow a few Transexual gamers like TheSphereHunter(She never posted anything about Hogwarts until sort of mentioning today on twitter, she is a huge horror Youtube person who does retrospectives on horror games) and you are right that there's a fair bit of very responsible & mature streamers who know it isn't worth the aggravation and will do their own thing away from everything. But there have been a fair amount of people who are letting it be known that they will not stream the game and that they judge people terribly if they buy the game as some form of virtue signaling which is a major problem. Ultimately, no one should be judged for what they consume and buy. Dipping into either extreme is no good but I feel almost like the people who are being obnoxious in favor of streaming Hogwarts Legacy are only doing this because of the uproar that the "left" or 'Anti JK Rowling' people have been trying to do.

What I will say is that going under the wayside is the terrible practice WB is doing by charging $10 dollars extra to get the game 3 days soon via digital.....which gives further fuel to gaming companies to continue this terrible practice. Game is ready to go but lets get a little more money to allow gamers to play via digital a few days sooner and help market our game for us.
This practice is shit and sadly it didn't backfire on WB here, they aren't the first(And sure won't be the last) to do this but this is such a shit practice that got rewarded per the numbers.
I guess you get a little bit of cosmetic goodies I guess but yeah everyone who bought this game and played Tuesday vs the release date of today did it to get ahead of the game since streaming is "Kill or be killed" sort of mantra. Any shortcut you can get for the views and exposure, you take.
Right behind the shitty microtransaction system that Blizzard was notoriously trying to pull from Overwatch 2 to Diablo Immortal. Right behind it.

Dipping into either extreme is no good but I feel almost like the people who are being obnoxious in favor of streaming Hogwarts Legacy are only doing this because of the uproar that the "left" or 'Anti JK Rowling' people have been trying to do. All I see from trans people were some of them on their own social media spoiling the game in some cases, and saying people should not support it. Most just wants nothing to do with the game or the hate because no matter what happens, they will be hated and blamed. In streams I seen people who claim to be trans attacking the streamers, but they are not people who normally seem to be in chats for trans gamers. I am thinking they are simply trolls. Same for the dogpiling on social media. Seems people that do not normally associate with the trans gaming community, suddenly appearing on accounts with almost no prior activity. All reeks of a 4chan stunt to rile up trans hate. Now, what I have seen, is allies of the LBGT community going fucking ham on people who opt to play this claiming they will not be friends with people who play it, or stream it. And many streamers looking at all the toxicity and just opting to avoid it. So these people are giving the trans community a bad name, by claiming to be allies. I also seen trans people ask not to do this as all it will do is bring them hate. The boycott was doomed to fail, as when it started preorders were insane. Like this was one of the fastest selling games on steam six weeks ago. As soon as preorders went live, they skyrocketed. There was no stopping the game. Then the glowing reviews just reinforced that this was going to be a huge hit. So yeah, it is a fucking shit show of toxicity within the online gaming community, that really only effects them. For normal gamers, this is just a fun game they can enjoy, or decide they do not want to support with little drama. Few really are going to give a shit if you play this in private or not. Streamers and content creators act like they care, but they are wrapped up themselves in the parasocial stuff, and it really does not matter what they think since they are not your friends.

They paid for early access. And this is where I think they are on to something. The average fan can wait three days. Streamers and what not however need to be on this day 1, so why not charge them for it? I would push it back to a week and make reviewers buy it too. They would be more honest if they had skin in the game anyway, rather than face an agreement that they return a score of 7+ or risk not getting anymore review copies.

They would be more honest if they had skin in the game anyway, rather than face an agreement that they return a score of 7+ or risk not getting anymore review copies. Never been a fan of giving out early review copies because it's a system that can be exploited in so many different ways. Like guys get blacklisted from companies because they didn't put a glowing review on a game given to them early. So many companies like EasyAllies or Kinda Funny also get caught in a tug of war where do they play consumer and be truthful/honest to the audience or do they play buddy-buddy with developers/companies for interviews or insider info to give them a leg up. I didn't see it from your POV that companies might as well invite the content creator to get in on playing the game sooner. It's why I respect Nintendo doing Day 1 universal releases(Minus leaks or people breaking street date which is unavoidable), it felt like a true gaming experience everyone got at once. Metroid Prime Remake getting shadowdropped and everyone playing this game(And it's really good according to reviews) at the same time makes so much sense. Same with a game I just beat, Hi-Fi Rush which also got very good reviews that everyone got to experience together. Not a fan of buying early access in games. EA did this for games like Madden in the past. Seems like trying to penny pinch your loyal fanbase even more dollars. Especially for multiplayer where people have to go in to not fall behind. Hopefully Street Fighter VI/Capcom has the good sense to not try this.

The Prime shadow drop is really wild. Almost never happens these days. Hi-Fi Rush did have early access to streamers. Seen a couple play it early.
Competitive games should never be pay for early access, but single player ones I do not mind if they charge content creators and reviewers to get it early, and give fans the same option, which they usually lack. But streamers still get these games early right now.
Like all you need is 100 average viewers on twitch and you can get just about anything a few days early if you agree to play it for an hour. And get paid several hundred dollars to do it.

I'm sure there's some instances of that but I doubt it's the majority of cases and trans are perfectly capable of acting toxic or abusive towards something as trivial as a video game.

Most trans people I follow in the gaming sphere want nothing to do with this game, as a lot of people are also using this game to bash trans people, as they see streamers playing it as an indication they agree that trans people are horrible. Like streaming chats with this game are fucking toxic as fuck if you read the shit the mods are nuking. People modding on channels playing this game are saying they never had to delete more shit, both anti-trans and anti-game.
I know people want to make this out to be a trans people are so angry and hateful, but most still just want to be left the fuck alone and not talked about. They are not going out to get attention.
Like I said, this is mostly people who claim to be allies going nutty, or people just trying to stir the pot and troll. And from what I been hearing, a lot of the accounts are new accounts, that instant follow and attack, which implies trolls not trans people or allies.

That's a very limited scope to pull from and obviously you can't speak on behalf of every trans person or every account of abuse.
What is clear is that the game is immensely popular, there's segments of the trans community who aren't handling it well and maybe they'll need to find a different tact if they want to cancel an IP created by an author who doesn't agree with all their ideologies.

What I can speak about is twitch, given I do mod there, and talk with people who mod for the larger variety streamers regularly given we all watch some of the same smaller old school streamers. What people are seeing is a lot of these attack accounts are new accounts, that follow and attack, just like the racist attacks. We know you can get rid of 99% of the hate enacting shield mode. And they come in waves. These are not trans people on their accounts, these are likely organized groups on discord, using the website to see who plays the game. We also know that LGBT streamers are getting attacked a lot than people without the tag. And some removed the tag. This does not feel to the people who are modding to be trans people, but trolls.
Things are different on twitter where it is allies attacking streamers, but on twitch in general the mods think trolls. Shield mode stopping the attacks is very, very telling.
Basically, a modern matrix raid for those that were on the old site back in the day.

So trans people aren't capable of making these alt accounts and going on crusades? Only the transphobes and you can speak for every instance of abuse because you mod or have modded for streamers in the past?

I think it's one of those things where the trans streamers aren't saying "Leave those people alone" and are just going about their business here. Again I am sure there are tons of LGBTQ+ people trying to stir things up but I do agree with c that it's the allies who are trying to virtue signal who are trying to spoil this game for streamers and to be nasty in chats. Saw someone outright say they had to make a slow mode/follower mode for 10 minutes to try and limit the spoilers, practically a mod lockdown. Going into someone's stream and spoiling the highpoints of the game is as scummy as it gets, especially if streamer has 'Blind' or 'First Playthrough' on their stream, should get your systems revoked for doing that. I can see a bunch of Chris Chans just trying to do that. Been tons of childish attitudes from both parties but ultimately, the "gamer" is always going to stay with a game not being watered down or censored because of a viral outroar. I would be upset if a game/series I was looking forward to had to be massively be censored to appease others. Might as well not make the game then at that point.

I'm sure there's trans content creators you and c know/interact with who are just trying to go about their business without being roped in but they aren't representative of an entire community.

You might be right, there's too many people to be accountable for and on the internet, your sexuality is never going to be known. I am not saying that Trans people aren't capable of being jerks but I also think some of the people doing this are also thinking they're helping the cause by spoiling the game or bombarding a streamer with vile tweets/posts. As terrible as it sounds, the internet, especially the gaming part of it can be heartless & ruthless. When the streamer cried as apart of a meltdown on stream, it gave them more ammo to feel like they can break down a streamer for going against what they wanted. It's important to never backdown and give into their demands because the moment you do that, you lose your identity as a content creator.

One of the bigger V-TUBERS(Yes it's a thing) got bullied off and had to end the stream early few days ago over the outroar. Seems like it's someone from Japan who just wanted to play Hogwarts Legacy to play it and had no idea about the cultural divide it has out West. I think for a ton of these people, they have been getting so much love & positivity that as soon as some of those people turn against them because they're doing something they disapprove of, it becomes somewhat of a shock and almost betrayal in a way so I get why some of these content creators are hurt. It's why you play what you want and don't let the actions dictate what you want to enjoy or not. Hope it's a wake up call for Girlfriend Reviews and other people who stay in one lane as far as what they try and provide because the minute you do something remotely controversial, there are people like this who will turn so hard against you. Just heartless.

They tried to go after Shida too, which is where I draw the line!! Just read her twitter comments, yeesh. Wrestling fans shut that down real fast though. Same with Tegan Nox/Nixon Newell. She's actually apart of the LGBTQ+ community and streamed Hogwarts early and I saw some mild disappointment tweets from people. The one thing we missed out on is Chris Chan reacting to Hogwarts and probably wanting to go pepper spray Gamestop employees again. Potential to be an absolute goldmine to see their reaction videos to want to boycott Hogwarts Legacy. Damn shame they ruined it with the evil shit they did to their mother, fucking clown. Missed out on that and Sonic Frontiers.

Jessamyn Duke been streaming the game with little drama. Or little drama after her mods deal with things.
I know other streamers I seen on youtube or twitch streamed with no problems. Maybe one or two comments but that is normal for any game. Just ban and move on.

Game took the top 4 steam spot this week with each of it's four different versions topping the charts. On par to be one of the top selling games of all time. Not even fully ported yet.
Meanwhile during the flurry of trans rage in the media a trans girl was killed in the UK. UK police claim it is not a hate crime but the girl was bullied relentlessly for being trans by kids like the ones who killed her. And this ultimately is the problem. Some people were harassed for playing a video game. That girl was slaughtered. These are not the same. And JKR is the loudest anti-trans voice in the UK.
Drama around the game pretty much cleared up on twitch. A lot of streamers finally started to use shield mode which was designed to shut down the hate. Shield mode blocks you from commenting unless you commented before in the chat, which blocks people chat surfacing to hate raid from interacting. Also twitter is getting better at flagging hate raider, so blocking suspicious chatters is helping. Basically if you are banned from one stream, others can see, and even block you before you post. Tiktok chat's is aggressively modded by AI so hate is hard there. Youtube still had hate problems, but youtube always has hate problems.
So rapidly the controversy is dying, and the game is standing on it's merits. Award time gonna be interesting as this could be a game of the year candidate. Also may be interesting to see what happens to the groups reviewing this game with awful scores due to the drama. Pissing of WB is not a smart idea if they want review copies of future games.
I did get the most hilarious rant in a channel I mod about how it is unforgivable that this game forces you to play a Brit.

Curious what Geoff Keighley will do for his awards, he gave a lukewarm at best condemning of Activision Blizzard at the time of their controversial height like 2 years ago. Does he go PC and just not put Hogwarts up for any awards, especially GOTY or will this be water under the bridge 9-10 months later and this will go on.
Means not enough great games came out this year if Hogwarts is a nominee. FF XVI, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Street Fighter VI, LoZ: Tears of the Kingdom, maybe Spider Man 2 & Starfield, there are some heavy hitters coming out this year on paper. If most if not all of these games are very good to great, Geoff can breathe a sigh of relief.

Pretty long bow to try and connect a murder to the game, let alone blame Rowling who simply believes there's a difference between women and trans women.
Awful news somebody lost their lives so young, RIP.
