Wealth. Fame. Power. The man who had everything in this world... The Pirate King, Gold Roger. The great treasure he left behind, One Piece has opened the curtain on a grand era! It is a time when eager pirates set sail, battle, and become great! The Great Age of Pirates! Words he spoke drove countless men out to sea. And so men set sights on the Grand Line, in pursuit of their dreams. The world has truly entered a Great Pirate Era! sandylea would have people ask for One Piece stuff at her old work and she’d always pronounce it “Luffy” like “Buffy”. We watched the first episode together and when his name was uttered: Are you fan of the series? With the live adaptation on Netflix as well as a animated remake of the long-running series in the works titled “The One Piece” what better time to jump aboard the ship and see what this series has to offer? (Please put major spoilers in spoiler tags) Only 1093 episodes (as of writing) to catch up on then I’ll be ready to set sail and join the hunt for the one piece. I don’t know about the US but all episodes are currently on Crunchyroll in the US for any PW’ers that wants to join my crew in this utterly futile idea. G/B jokingly estimates it will take me 5 years. I work full time and have the minimum requirements of a social life so let’s see  Will system walk the plank or find the treasure? Episodes are roughly 20 minutes skipping the intro/outro each time. If I watch 10 episodes a day, 7 days a week it will take me 14 weeks to get to 980 episodes. Then only 113 episodes (as of writing) to go! Smooth sailing.

Yes but I'm growing more over it. It might be the greatest work of fiction EVER but it has such a cost. I'm about 50+ behind and growing. I hope we see an ending in the next decade but if Oda making bank on his stuff like GRRM what incentive does he have to finish?

Yes, I like One Piece a lot. It has great characters and gets more and more bonkers as the series progresses.
I binged it pre-COVID and got to the end of the Doflamingo arc (#746). I haven't watched past that as I'm letting them build up for a long time, possibly until the end.
We watched the live action and liked it a lot. It does a good job with the flavor of One Piece.

I enjoyed the Netflix show, but I’m not dedicating that much time to the anime until it’s finished.

I haven't gotten around to the live-action series, although it's on the list of shows to watch.
The anime series, I was very much into back in the day, but I have no idea where I stopped watching, if I wanted to get back into it, I would need to start over from the beginning.

Ya-yo! Ya-yo!
I'm going to start One Piece one day is practically an old meme at this point, and frankly I just don't have the time or the patience. The me a decade ago where I caught up to Naruto and Bleach in like two months, so I could discuss thing in those spoiler threads. Turns out years later, I backed the wrong horse. Mistakes. Were. Made.
Reading One Piece in the Shounen Jump magazines was at least the highlight for me when they were featured and the story and characters are written well. the Impel Down Arc is still something I remember well and fondly.

Ha, I made the same mistake with Luffy as well.
I collected the manga all throughout high school before moving on from the hobby altogether. All told, I had the first 17 volumes, which covers the first 2 seasons of the anime and the start of season 3.
I can't really speak for the anime. The 4Kids dub was notoriously bad and the bootleg DVD pack I owned had some of the worst translations I've ever come across. It was like they ran the script through google translate and said good enough. They change a few things around, like certain characters are introduced earlier but I don't think it changes anything drastically and just fits the TV format. I couldn't speak to any filler content, I believe it's pretty faithful in the opening 30 or so episodes.
I'm curious to see how you and sandy take to it.

The main thing that has put me off One Piece up until now is comments like, it gets really good after episode 30... I am not up to a slow burn like that, it would have to grab me by the short and curlies or I am out.

I recommend watching the subbed version. Some of the characters have a lot of verbal tics that give a lot of flavor to the dialog.

I think outright starting with episode 1 is probably not an option for most. I'd almost suggest the manga cycled through the netflix show and whatever their version of Kai ends up being.

East Blue Saga (Ep 1-61) One of the things I loved about the book Atlas Shrugged was the main conflict at the start of the book to do with the railroads seems like it is going to be the main issue of the book, it isn’t but kept me invested going later into the book. Considering I could see how long the book was I knew how to set my expectations. It’s the same with this. Had I just watched this on a whim and not know it’s 1000+ episodes long I may have been frustrated on the slow build but not the case here. While this seemed like the tutorial level by gaming standards they still did a great job of building each character and putting together a good balance for the crew. I thought they were going to pull a GoT with Zoro and while it would have been shocking I’m glad he’s still alive as of writing. (Again please avoid spoiling anything major for me). Probably my favourite character so far, that and I really enjoyed the Gold Roger stuff. I’ve also heard several comparison made between One Piece and Don Quixote (I know there’s even a character with that name later) and having read the latter I definitely see the comparison. Fantastic book if you only read the first part, the second part that gets tacked on with a lot of copies is pointless. Or if you aren’t about reading, this is as close of an adaption as you’ll get: Luffy can get a bit grating at times (seemed less abrasive in the sub but sticking with the dub but it’s easy to forget he’s supposed to be a kid around adults from what I gather. I admire his ambition, of course I can sail the grand line and find the one piece. I see what @ness means about the jobbers of the week, that dragonite villain guy was awful and I’m glad he got nonchalantly kicked off the boat. Really enjoying it so far my only real gripes are the new theme song sucks and EVERY TIME I close CrunchyRoll it turns the close captions back off. My hearing ain’t what she used to be, I need the captions! So for those sane enough not to watch all episodes: So after 60+ episodes Luffy has got a crew together and only now started to sail the treacherous grand line to find the legendary one piece , I’m sure there won’t be a massive interruption to that as soon as they sail the mountain 😒

What do you need the translation for anyway? Gomu Gomu Pistol is the attack, Zoro is gonna be lost and Nami is a cutie.

Captain’s Log (22/2/24)
- 70 episodes in as of 2:33am Thursday as a new crew member has joined Luffy on his quest.
- Heavy sailing delays expected due to travelling to Botany Bay on the weekend, could make time up with some fast sailing on other days but unlikely.

I know it's an insane ask, but if you can get to episode ~500... that arc (Paramount War) and the following flash back are as good as it gets with OP.

100 episodes in! Which is (to be expected) behind schedule and not even 10% of the way but need to celebrate the milestones to keep me going Congratulations! What took you weeks, took me five years to reach. You're ahead of me now, so these are some uncharted waters up ahead.
I followed Oda's advice and skipped straight to the final season as well. Without spoiling anything, I can say one episode in, it was extremely easy to follow what was happening since it was basically a recap and a roll-call for all the major characters in the game. I think you'd be able to skip there and get what's going on.
Second and third episode? It felt like I was watching GI Joe where they were just making up powers and rules on the spot with a bunch of characters that didn't even seem to belong in One Piece.

What do you think of all the melodrama? They cry more than a Flair family reunion. Didn’t bother me, those episodes with the two giants and that annoying laugh though… When they said it would take a year to reset the log or whatever it was and it seemed like there was going to be a whole saga dedicated to it I was considering throwing in the towel  I haven’t had any problems with the show itself but I’m glad I chose Dubbed because the captions for most of the Chopper/Snow episodes were wrong or from other episodes. Every time I close the app I have to put the captions back on in the settings + the skip intro button finally comes up but it only works 20% of the time nor will it let me manually skip most of the time.

System you're either gonna need to learn to love it or no sell the laughs because every villain (and others I'm sure) has their own special one. Dunno if its something they used in the dub.

Captains Log (1/3/24) Despite heavy setbacks due to trip to Botany Bay only 5 episodes behind due to strong sailing to make up for lost time. Storm heading into the last 5 episodes so unable to set sail for some time. Currently on episode 135. Will give thoughts on the Alabastar Arc at sunrise.

Update, despite the setbacks I’m now up to date as planned after some serious binging . The subtitles are either minutes delayed or from a different episode every few episodes. By far the worst streaming app I’ve used. There’s a highly emotional Reindeer-man-doctor as well as political unrest in Alabasta which constantly changes pronunciation from STA to STER and there’s no rain. Also Luffy has a brother he has never mentioned before. Closest comparison I can maybe make is to Game of Thrones, one thing I think really gives to the adventure setting is eating & drinking is actually focused on somewhat regularly which is a nice touch compared to stuff that skips over it. Some cool fights & battles. Vivi the princess has joined and left the crew pertaining to the situation in Alabasta during this arc. Took awhile for me to get into this saga but was a nice change up from the seafaring. Though Zorro touches it it’s odd that there’s so many side quests with Luffy happy to go on considering how determine he is to find the One Piece. Like I don’t even get the sense after getting on the grand line he has an idea where to look? Then again there’s a reason this is 1000+ episodes and still going

Sky Island SagaI was quite sick for the past two weeks so very behind on this. Nonetheless I wasn’t a huge fan of this arc, I think I just like the show more between the arcs when they set sail. It just feels like one of those films where it’s a clear point A to point B storyline and there’s constant side quests to pad out a simple mission. I’ve finally made it to widescreen and better animation at least! Only 890 episodes to go as of writing!

I last watched episode 1048. They must be right @ the manga because these episodes later on get painfully slow moving. Like I'm borderline eyeing reading the manga instead.

Throwing in the towel.
I’m only on episode 270 so not even a 1/4 of the way yet and I don’t love the show. I don’t dislike but not enough to continue especially with the how loud the characters are.
Will decide a punishment for abandoning my quest of the One Piece
