How did you pick the team you support?
One of the reasons I’ve never really got into team sports. Other than the default of going for the team that’s closest to your hometown what is your criteria?
Watch a lot more of the NFL than I usually do last season, still at a lost as to who to follow

I grew up a Jets and Giants fan since they were always on my television. I remember my 4th grade teacher was a massive Jets fan and HOT. So I liked the Jets more.
One year in class, my friends and I were picking who would win the Super Bowl as the playoffs were about to start. I randomly predicted the Titans because I liked their jerseys and loved Eddie George. Since I was so young, I took that prediction to heart. I had to be right. So I locked in on the Titans. Miracle win over Buffalo had me thinking I was that guy. That I was HIM. Boom, another win. Another win. The Titans are going to the Super Bowl. At this point I am in love with the Titans and Eddie George is my favorite player in the world. Then we lose by one yard.
Sports heartbreak. I cried for the first time because of a sport team.
The McNair/George era comes to an end but wait! Here comes Vince Young. I am now obsessed with him and well, they never quite did it. Then the Titans did Vince Young dirty, went to white QBs and never won me back.
For years I started focusing my attention on fantasy football and loving players more than teams. Sure I cheered for the Sanchez Jets and those two years were fucking great. Still, I never quite fell in love. Then came the Patrick Mahomes era and it coincided with my gambling era. Mahomes as an underdog?! PAY ME!
Mahomes against the unstoppable 49ers in the SB as underdogs? Am I the only one watching how amazing this dude is? Are they crazy? Have you seen this playoff run with the comebacks?! This guy is too good. Fuck it. HUGE BET!
Then watching that 4th quarter comeback in the Super Bowl and I was no longer just attracted to this legend. I was in love and I loved his big Kansas City team too. Kelce is a dog. Andy Reid is adorable. The cheetah!
Then the Cheetah left and everyone counted my guy out. Not me. I never did. First season without the Cheetah, we become Super Bowl champions AGAIN!
I love excellency. I love when I pick the right horse. (Titans/Chiefs) I love winning money.
And when it comes to PW….
I AM THE TRIBAL ‘CHIEF’ OF THE RED KINGDOM!

It would be great to see you in the NFL threads this season System! A quick way of cutting down your potential teams would be those that have an Aussie on the roster, that would leave you with San Francisco, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Seattle, New Orleans and Denver. The first four are all probably playoff teams if that's important to you, the Lions are the most likeable.

MLB: Yankees- Dad grew up as a Yank fan and I grew up around the dynasty era of the late 90s. Stood loyal to NYY even through the 2004 choke and post 2009 blunders. This despite me living in Queens(Mets country). NHL: Rangers- Stepdad was a big Rangers fan so naturally I root for them. They are 4th in the pecking order of the major 4 sports and due to my next team I don't get to watch them as much as the others NBA: Knicks- They were(And IMO still are) New York's lone team, #OneTeamOneNewYork. True New Yorkers wear the orange and blue in basketball. Lots of suffering with this team has hardened me, arguably rivals the next team I will highlight but it's close. Great team they got on paper this year though, not used to good management. NFL: NY Jets- My favorite team of the 4. Since the pandemic my Yankee passion has taken a bit of a hit but the Jets fandom never died. This despite a North American leading drought of 13 non-playoff years and so many fails at QB/HC/GMs throughout the years. I believe in this team though this year, not sure how far they go but knock on wood they do good this year. A lot of long suffering Jets fans since 1969 maybe I don't have the wear & tear but I was 6 when they went 1-15 and still wore my Jets jacket as a kid during the shitty Rich Kotite era. I've seen a lot of shit. Happy Jets team=Happy Blindy. New PW has not seen happy Blindy yet.
The OGs know how much a cocky Blindy can transform the forum. Maybe he's gone due to the years of suffering or me getting older, who knows. NCAAB: St John's Red Storm- I live in Queens so naturally this is the team I root for. They probably won't ever win a title but winning an NCAA Tourney game would be big, in Rick Pitino we trust baby. Haven't won a NCAA tourney game in over 20 years, they're due. NCAAF: Notre Dame Fighting Irish- The lone non-NY team, my stepdad grew me into this team again. NY doesn't really have a NYC based college even though Rutgers is the closest as the NJ team and Syracuse is in the state of NY I guess for the power conferences. Again ND has seen better days but they're still a good collegiate side just not a powerhouse like they used to be. They're also on TV weekly via NBC or ABC or CBS or whoever so I can watch their games weekly without struggling, that's a big coup. USA for everything international because uhh duh. I root for Poland as my 2nd side as a Polish American.

I mean growing up in Wisconsin you don’t choose the Packers , they choose you. It’s a way of life here.
Most of my secondary teams I follow in all sports come down to favorite player(s). I love the Bucks but loved the Lakers when Kobe was there. Will never watch baseball but root for the Brewers though I grew up rooting for Griffey.
The Chargers were my favorite AFC team for the longest time because of LT and then it was Houston for Watt. Was even the Chiefs in younger years because I went to their training camp and the Bengals had the coolest helmets. Now it’s probably back to the Bengals.
Just don’t choose the Vikings or Bears in the NFL. Bad teams , bad organizations and worse fan bases.

Outside of local sports teams that you automatically cheer for because you get to watch them in person -
NFL - enjoyed cheering for the Niners legacy of the late 80s and early 90s when I first started watching NFL as a 8-10 year old. Kinda fell out of favour with NFL for a bit as a teenager as other interests took over (girls, video games, drugs). Fast forward to late 90s, early 2000s, started watching again and got involved with fantasy football in 2002. Then I just cheered for players I drafted on my team. Then finally in 2004 I was watching Troy Polamalu and said - this guy is fun to watch! Been a Steeler fan since.

I do enjoy the commercials with Mahomes and Polamalu in them together KING KID. Minneapolis is the closest NFL city to me, so there's a ton of Viking fans around. Made it easy for me not to want to cheer for the Vikes.

There are a variety of factors. Sometimes I'll root for a team that's an underdog, which could either mean it's a team that's being counted out this year, or one that, moreover, hasn't won f*ck all of sh*t in a long time (e.g., Miami Dolphins). On the hand, sometimes it's hard to root against legends. I was never a big Tom Brady fan until late in his career; the fact that he was becoming an "old man" defying the forces of entropy made him a lot more likable, to me. His quest to win became bigger than football. I was a lot more invested in Bucs Brady than I ever was in Pats Brady.
There are also just individual players that draw me to a team. I was always, like John Madden, a big Brett Favre mark. His gutsy style of play, being really fun to watch, and unique personification of the term "iron man" made him seem like he was a more special player than his contemporaries. When LeClair and Recchi left the Flyers for the Penguins, and then Recchi for the Bruins later, all those teams became easier to root for ... Those are hometown players that made me want to follow them elsewhere. I would throw Andy Reid in there, similarly, as a head coach; it's easy to root for the Chiefs because Andy was "our guy" in Philly for so long.

I've always wondered how people in New York end up as either Jets or Giants fans or if maybe they root for both. It's an area thing mainly, Jets fans are predominantly from Long Island and Queens while Giants fans are Manhattan and North Jersey. There's a correlation across sports too. It's usually Giants-Yankees-Knicks-Rangers and Jets-Mets-Nets-Islanders.

I've always wondered how people in New York end up as either Jets or Giants fans or if maybe they root for both. HR has the correct teams but everyone's different in all honesty. Long Island reps the Isles and Jets because they played or practice over there. Most of Queens loves Mets, Bronx loves Yanks because they play there. Rangers and Knicks are considered the top tier teams regardless. I think all New York fans are Knicks fans since they are New York's first original team. Nets come from New Jersey and tried to invade the 5 boroughs with traitor Jay Z as a co-owner but much like with the Clippers vs Lakers, they're 2nd. I don't hate the Mets or Giants because they play in a different division, just their fanbases are ridiculously obnoxious and try to rub it in. Giants have a big brother complex where they love the need to belittle a team not even in their crossfire where even schmucks like Strahan after the SB win(BTW any true Jets fan was rooting for NYG>NE in those super bowls) had to pat down Jet fans and say the Giants run this city. Mets as someone who lives in Queens are arguably even worse. The Mets can lose really bad one day but if the Yanks lost too, the day isn't fully ruined. The Mets have a "Misery loves company" mentality. As shown this year, the Mets treated the Subway Series like it's their world series with the 4 game sweep but will gladly lay down vs a division rival like Miami. It goes back to new owner Steve Cohen being obsessed with trying to make the Mets the marquee baseball team. Taking talents like Luis Severino and a Yank coach in Mendoza was pretty much the tell this offseason for NYM. Met fans want Juan Soto not just because he's great but as a flex move over the Yanks to show who has bigger pockets.

I actually chose the 49'ers originally cause my friend on the bus liked them lol. Then I watched Favre/Green Bay massacre the Niners in '96, then they won a Superbowl. Green's my favorite color, Bret was the funnest QB in the league- boom, that's how a kid from Ohio became a Pack fan.
My family are mostly split Bengals/Browns but lean 60/40 Bengals. 90's Bengals were a shitshow but they actually didn't become my team sooner because of local blackouts. A lot of times they weren't even on TV and the Browns didn't exist anymore, so that's the other reason for it. Ocho/Palmer years changed that, and Bengals have been my favorite AFC team since. I love both equally.
I really had no choice in baseball. You're just born a Reds fan in southern Ohio, much like one is with the Buckeyes (though to a lesser extent).
Basketball I hardly follow but I chose the Cavs after Jordan retired because of Shawn Kemp, then LeBron. Least passionate fandom really.
Hockey brings me nothing but pain: Buffalo Sabres when Ohio didn't have a team because my dad's cool boss was from there + I loved Hasik, then I got the shiny new Sabres in CBJ w/no Hasik... *sigh*
FC Cincinnati in soccer because Fuck The Crew.

How did you pick the team you support? Watch a lot more of the NFL than I usually do last season, still at a lost as to who to follow Play style/team culture/history/aesthetics are your go to since you don't have a regional attachment. I struggled with this myself when choosing a Prem team to follow. Here to help though: If you like never satisfying in the bedroom, the Cowboys might be for you... Do you enjoy rolling up your sleeves with snarky condescension? You may love Pittsburgh... An aussie posting on PW? Smells a little like the Giants in here... Becoming numb to life's neverending despair? Blindy might have a green seat saved for you... Or just be like KING KID if you wanna always come out on top. The possibilities are endless... Well, capped at 32 really, but seemingly endless.

Honestly if I were someone with no regional affiliation just getting into the NFL, I’d want a young up and coming team that’s never quite broken through or at least hasn’t for a long time. And they have to be fun to watch…
Detroit seems the logical answer but it seems unfair to jump on them right as they have a chance to be good for awhile after being the worst franchise in sports for a lot of their existence. I think you’d need to pay your dues to be a Lions fan.
Honestly if it were me it’d probably be the Texans.

Quickie version is you want to pick a team that's good so you can still care come playoff time, but not so good/trendy that you'd be seen as a front runner. So no Chiefs! And since I've never been known for quickie versions...
MLB: Baltimore Orioles- The Orioles were everything growing up in Baltimore and surrounding suburbs during the period in between the Colts leaving and Ravens arriving. Didn't matter if the O's were good or bad. I bled Oriole orange. Cal Ripken Jr. was my hero. I had a ton of merch. Still have some. Went to at least 50 games between 1986 and 2014. Got out of baseball a little bit in the early 2000s as I moved onto other interests before coming back strong for another decade from the mid 2000s-mid 2010s. Haven't cared since 2015 tho.
Pirates were my NL team for 25 mostly painful years. Started as a tossup between them and the exotic San Diego Padres to be my NL team and the Pirates got good first in the early 90s. I was into the Texas Rangers for a few years in the mid 90s when they became Baltimore South with a bunch of popular Oriole castoffs. And while it brings me only great shame now, I'd root for the Boston Red Sox going all the way back to the 1986 playoffs as the lesser evil over the Blue Jays and Yankees whenever the O's were out of it as we usually were. Then the Red Sox became the very thing they had once fought against so they could go kick rocks too. Red Sox awesome 2004 postseason run brought me back to baseball and by April-May 2005 I hated them every bit as much as the Yankees lol.
Professional Football Denver Broncos were my first NFL love. Can't remember if because of The Drive or whether The Drive solidified it, but I was a Broncos/Elway guy beginning in 1986.
In 1987 I fell in love with a New Orleans Saints team finally having a winning season after 20 years of futility.
So I had the Broncos in the AFC and Saints in NFC flip flopping at 1-2 in the NFL* until 1999. It was mostly Saints from 87-93 and all Broncos from 96-99. I had a Saints Starter jacket and the Broncos rewarded me by finally bringing home a pair of Lombardis after 3 brutal fails. Already having two teams to support meant I was never a Ravens fanatic, but did support them in their early years here just because they were local before turning hard on 'em during their 2000 Super Bowl season.
*Specifying because the Baltimore CFL Stallions were my favorite professional football team in 94-95.
By 2000 Elway had retired, I had lost all interest in the Saints and turned hard on the now sickeningly Ravens, so I turned heel to support their rival Pittsburgh Steelers whom I had always respected due to their long tradition of greatness #SuperSunday. I was a big time Steelers fan in the 2000s, peaking with the Super Bowl win over Seattle, before losing interest in football around the mid 2010s and giving away most of my Steelers merch.
After a few years of not watching, even skipping a few Super Bowls, I came back during the 2020 playoffs. Fell in love with Derrick Henry and the Titans because they beat the Ravens lol. I’m super duper casual nowadays but have been rooting for the Bills and now Lions to finally get over the hump because their poor fans have been through so much pain and misery over the past 60 years.
NBA Started out as a fan of the "Bad Boy" Pistons. Actually forgot about this for 30+ years, but the origin of my Pistons fandom was a phantom foul call that cost them the 1988 NBA Finals (first I ever watched) against the stupid Lakers. The injustice of it all really got my goat. It was so unfair! After that the Pistons could do no wrong in my eyes. They were only "Bad Boys" because the corrupt NBA screwed them! They were like a late 80s version of 1997 Bret Hart- the justified "heel."
With all apologies to the very cool Blazers & Jazz, the Phoenix Suns were my team out West. They had a cool color combo, an awesomely named coach in Cotton Fitzsimmons, and their star player Tom Chambers was MVP of the very first basketball game I ever watched (1987 All Star Game). Then they got soon to be MVP Charles Barkley and leapfrogged the declining Pistons in my heart of hearts. I soon got a Suns Starter jacket and was gutted when they lost the Finals to the hated Bulls.
But nothing lasts forever, and I soon switched allegiances to Patrick Ewing's New York Knicks who were basically Bad Boys 2.0. My friend Matt the IRS Fan honestly deserves a lot of credit for converting me. I loved these guys and their feuds with the stupid Bulls, Pacers, Heat, and Hornets. It was NY Knicks vs. The World in the mid-late 90s and Matt and I were so there for it. Then I moved on/lost interest in the NBA during the lockout year of 1999 and can count on one hand the number of NBA games I've watched since then.
Cool to realize my hatred of Jordan and the Bulls was more than just me going against the popular thing. Those jerks ended the Pistons dynasty, kept the Suns from winning a ring, and then spent years keeping the Knicks out of the Finals all in less than a decade. It's no wonder I hated those bastards. Stupid Bulls...
NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs were my team for those few years in the mid 90s when the NHL games on Sega Genesis briefly tricked me into pretending I cared about hockey.
Soccer: 1990s Baltimore Blast/Spirit and I tried getting into the EPL for a year or two when that got hot in the early 2010s. I wasn't a team guy though. I was a Lord Bendtner Guy. He ruled. Played for one of the trendy teams. I forget which one. But those jerks didn't play him much, so they can go kick rocks too. Then all the people I knew who were into this stuff for a minute either had kids or realized outdoor soccer is the sports equivalent of watching paint dry and we all stopped pretending to care.
College Football: Technically Maryland just because they were the local lads. But they also sucked with just 1 bowl appearance (a TIE against noted powerhouse Louisiana Tech (lol) in the lowly Weed Eater Bowl iirc during the decade+ I was really into CFB, so I was forced to look elsewhere. Like....
Florida State from 87-93ish. They had Neon Deion, Sammie Smith, Danny McManus, Bobby Bowden, kick return razzle dazzle, and were most importantly the arch-rival of hated Miami. Rooting for these poor Wide Right boys built character. Then, like the Red Sox, they became the very thing they had been fighting against and I turned on them hardcore in favor of...
Nebraska Cornhuskers- mid 90s. The GOAT. They whipped up on the state of Florida's hated Big 3. Their option offense was art and "Touchdown" Tommie Frazier a master artiste. Bonus points for being unstoppable on Sega Genesis' Bill Walsh College Football.
Then I was really into Tennessee during the Peyton Manning era. Was gutted how they could never get by stupid Florida. Was even more gutted when they robbed Peyton of his Heisman. Oh, I rooted for Peyton/Colts/Broncos in the NFL too. They were my backup act behind the Steelers in the 2000s-10s.
Then I stopped caring about CFB around the turn of the century. Came back a little bit in the mid 2000s as a USC fan mainly just because my brother and cousin had this obnoxiously over the top pathological hatred of the Trojans and then I was really into Hawaii during the Colt Brennan year(s?). Was also a big Navy guy because they were good, local, and most importantly ran the old school Triple Option like it was still the 20th Century. You love to see it. Then I stopped caring again.
College Basketball: Technically Maryland again going all the way back to the Tony Massenburg and Walt Williams years when they sucked. So, like with football, I was forced to look elsewhere if I wanted to care come postseason until the Terps finally got consistently good during the great Joe Smith era. Like...
UNC & Wake Forest on the Red Sox/FSU principle. They were competitive ACC teams (with cool unis!) who were most importantly Not Duke. Then, like the Red Sox & FSU, I turned on UNC hard when they became the very thing they had once stood in opposition to. First March Madness I followed was 1988 with Danny Manning's Kansas Jayhawks winning so that made me a Kansas guy and I in turn gave my friends a whole lot of money by picking those choke artists to win my bracket every year for like a decade. I was into most Cinderellas, rooted for all Maryland teams, and honestly had a team in practically every conference during the peak of my fandom in the 90s. As usual I lost interest around the turn of the century after finding new hobbies unrelated to sports only to come back later for a few years before losing interest again. Last year I remember following March Madness was the Jimmer Fredette season.

I'll get the novelty one out of the way first since it's the team I'm most passionate about
CFL: Much like the Packers in the NFL the Saskatchewan Roughriders choose you being born in Sask. We are also the lovable losers of the league where there are just 9 teams, we have 4 Grey Cups in 114 years of existence. We also win and lose in spectacular fashion including debacles like "the catch" by Tony Gabriel in 1976 and the still ridiculous "13th Man" in 2009. On the other hand the 1989 Grey Cup is still the best football game I ever saw (35 point second quarter over 1000 yards total offence) , a 43-40 victory over Hamilton on a last second field goal which is now called "the kick". We are also up there with the likes of the Toronto Maple Leafs when it comes to merchandise sales.
NFL: Very complicated, my go to since the west coast offense days is still the 49'ers but have also supported the likes of the Giants, Vikings, Lions, Packers, LA Rams (pre and post but never St.Louis!), Bills, Houston Oilers, Chargers, Colts and Eagles for various reasons mostly due to underdog status or certain players.
NHL: From the early 80's to around 1994 it was the Calgary Flames. I hated those dominate Oilers teams with Gretzky and the Montreal Canadiens so the 1986 Steve Smith own goal and the 1989 Stanley Cup win always have a special place in my sports memories. Yes I did favor the Florida Panthers in this years final, lol. By the mid 90's though the Flames were becoming unwatchable so between a combination of having Detroit TV for American stations and being the new up and coming hot team I went with the Red Wings. I still follow them to this day even though they haven't made the playoffs in awhile. Red Wing legend and current GM Steve Yzerman seems to be trying to improve the team though and they keep getting closer to making it back. Fun times in the mid 90's winning cups and having all out brawl with the Av's.
MLB: Has to be the Blue Jays but beyond that I was a huge Mets fan in the mid to late 80's with Darryl and Doc. Was also a Reds fan due to them beating the hated A's and Rob Dibble/Eric Davis/Chris Sabo. Also loved the "lunch pail" Yankees of the late 90's early 2000's and had a soft spot for the 2004 Red Sox but they instantly became obnoxious. Also liked the 80's and more recent Dodger teams, such great pitching between those 2 eras with Hershiser, Valenzuela, Kershaw etc.
NBA: Real front runner here with Bulls posters plastered on my wall and having all the Jordan tapes. Moved onto the Kobe/Shaq Lakers and later the Cavs until I lost interest in the NBA in the early 2010's. My fandom also strayed to the early 90's Supersonics and Suns. Mid 2000's Suns were fun to watch too with canuck Steve Nash.
College Sports: It begins and ends with the Michigan Wolverines in both football and basketball. We have got their coverage for over 35 years as our American affiliate stations and the Steiners being alumni also help (lol.) I also had a Wolverines starter jacket in high school,

Ive always been a Houston guy because I grew up there but have to point out that the 1996-97 Seattle Supersonics were so fucking cool that I betrayed my hometown to root for them. I fell in love with that team in the 96 NBA playoff run where they lost the finals to that Bulls super-team. I was even pulling for them in the head to head series against my hometown Rockets in the 97 playoffs, and I loved the Rockets. There was just something about that Sonics team though, Payton and Kemp, plus I always payed as them in NBA Jam. That was an awesome sports team that I think just everybody had a thing for those years.

I loved MJ/Pippen but they were Luger+Sting, goated yes but still a little top-heavy as a team... Kemp/Glove were the damn Road Warriors, what a rush!

I AM THE TRIBAL ‘CHIEF’ OF THE RED KINGDOM!I like picking on ya here about it but this explains a lot actually. Not my style, but at least I understand it more now. Also +1 for Buckeye legend Eddie George fanboy here. Felt like every 90's kid around here owned at least one scarlet 27 at one point lol Most stylish 2000's unis: -Titans' away George, #27 -Chargers' powder blue Tomlinson, #21

I was never a big Tom Brady fan until late in his career; the fact that he was becoming an "old man" defying the forces of entropy made him a lot more likable, to me. His quest to win became bigger than football. I was a lot more invested in Bucs Brady than I ever was in Pats Brady. Same here. I was a Peyton Guy so that naturally made me a Brady hater. Couldn't stand the guy. But came to love old man Brady. It's like in wrestling when everyone, even former haters, start cheering that grizzled veteran making a comeback, or clearly on the last run of his career. LA Rams (pre and post but never St.Louis!) Interesting! What's the story here?
