You have to be fucking kidding me. EVERY SINGLE movie on this list is better than BFG. Even Close Encounters. You sure this isn't a typo?

Not seen BFG. I know it's based on a Roald Dahl book though. I can see it being a good film. You know what? Now that April Fool's been mentioned, I think UT is playing a little trick on us.

Damn, UT got us.
I hear it was a solid adaptation as well, just it didn't attract a huge audience and it didn't bomb either, so it didn't grab any headlines. I'm a Dahl fan, but for whatever reason, I never bothered with the book or any of the animated adaptations.

Schindler's List was just too essential to Spielberg's filmography and to the man personally to leave out of the top 5. He put his heart and soul into telling that story which is quite the feat of endurance since he was also doing post production on Jurassic Park at the same time.
I have kind of drifted away from ET over the years since it is rarely on TV and I rarely have the urge to watch it. That being said it still holds up as one of the best examples of Spielberg's movie magic coupled with a strong message, number 7 on my list.

I've said my feeling on Raiders in the past , I don't think it holds up at all and is actually a chore to watch in 2018. I respect it far more than I enjoy it but it's one of those movie IMO that is better off left to memories and not revisited. The only things that REALLY hold up is Fords charisma and Williams score but that ain't enough to get me through the movie.
I also decided to watch Last Crusade for this and while I think it's better because of the Ford/Connery interaction - I don't find it to be near the classic it's made out to be either.
Overall just not a great movie anymore - an important movie in the history of cinema but one of the handful of ones that simply don't hold up to what it eventually helped inspire.
Having said all that , I'm okay with it at #4 - I thought it would be higher so I'm happy it didn't take a spot in the top two.

Decided to put an extra one up today for a few reasons. I didn't put up an actual one yesterday and because Saving Private Ryan has shown up on more lists than any other movie at this point and I didn't feel like wasting an entire day on it. Not much more to say at this point - great opening 45 minutes ... solid after that and clearly one of PW's favorite movies. Deserving of being in the top three for the Normandy stuff alone.

Raiders was my #2 and until Schindler's List came along was my easy #1 Spielberg movie. It is by far the most influential movie Spielberg has ever made, spawning dozens of imitators and even films outside of it's genre have imitated many of it's tropes. The film is based on those old pulp adventure serials from the 20's and 30's and Raiders captures that vibe PERFECTLY.
I find the idea that Raiders doesn't hold up to be absolutely laughable. It's still an amazing looking film to this day and the action of the film is still first rate. You want to talk a film that doesn't hold up, look no further than ET. That film SCREAMS dated.
Saving Private Ryan was the #3 film on my list. I simply cannot say enough good things about it. In terms of overall quality it's probably Spielberg's second best overall movie.

So to me ET is a perfect film. One of two Spielberg has made, and I'm glad to see the other should make it into the top two. It's funny, it's sincere, it's nostalgic, it's emotional, it's inquisitive - it's just perfect to me. And guaranteed to make me cry.
Raiders is still great fun to me even if I understand why some feel like it doesn't stand up. I think that's wrong, and I can watch it over and over no problem.
Still haven't seen SPR.

ET was my #3. I love it so much!
Raiders was my #2 and hopefully my #1 comes in at #1!
Saving Private Ryan just missed my top 5.
All of these are Spielberg at the top of his game!

I find the idea that it holds up to be even more laughable , it's a movie based on a 1930's type of entertainment and while it may have been effective in the early 80's - it only adds the the idea of it being dated in 2018. The comedy is the absolute worst and adventure movies might have borrowed or even stolen from it but they also expanded and made it better. Like I said , a movie to be respected but not a movie that isn't incredibly dated. And then to compare it to ET's ability to hold up is even more laughable. Indy is rooted in site gags and effects that have no chance of holding up , ET is a timeless story rooted in heart and childlike wonder - to premises that will never grow old for any movie. The story stands the test of time and very few movies , much less live action movies have been able to capture that same emotion. I've witnessed children watching both of these for the first time in the past 6 weeks and it's no contest - ET wins in a landslide. You could released ET today and it would be successful - you release Raiders today and people would shit all over it , I promise you.

FAR more people shit on ET than Raiders. 72% audience rating compared to 95% for Raiders.
And as much as I love The Neverending Story, it is a movie that is absolutely dated with 80's cheese. ET is dated in the exact same manner except it's far more boring.

I get that Saving Private Ryan is a good movie and a technical marvel... but man I hated watching it. I’m not a war guy. I don’t care for war movies, war history, etc. So watching a movie with a shit ton of brutal deaths in a place and time I have no attachment to I just can’t do. And the first forty five minutes are the absolute worst of it. I’ll take the guys wandering through Europe over any action set piece in the movie.
Ugh.
I still had it tenth, which is a statement about two things. 1) I really hate Hook and The Lost World and 2) the last lines really hit me.

Raiders was also my number 2. It's seemingly "dated" comedy actually adds a great deal of charm to the film and complements the action perfectly. I've always loved the idea of the Nazis trying to gain religious artifacts to tap into unspeakable power. It's so "supervilliany" but grounded in the reality of World War II. I still find this to be more of a George Lucas project however because of his desire to recapture the feel for those old adventure serials. He really set the template for the franchise but Spielberg was brilliant in executing it.
Saving Private Ryan was my number 4. Spielberg added more of his flair to the follow-up to his last drama Schindler's List. As many have stated perhaps the most intense opening to a mover ever. It set a new standard that also had many copycats trying to recapture the manic nature of war.

ET is dated in the exact same manner except it's far more boring. Based on what they seen and connections to it and what it meant to movies of its ilk going forward. It's not really a timeless story , the special effects at the time were groundbreaking but since have been surpassed in about 5 different variations and waves and the comedy is absolute shite. Not to mention the obvious flaws of the story - you take Indy out of Raiders and nothing changes. You take ET out of ET and you don't have a fucking movie. And comparing it to Neverending Story is hyperbole - ET doesn't rely on nearly as much cheese or special effects as Neverending Story and when it does use them it has the power of Spielberg behind it and it's used to full effect and ALL the effects are greater than that of Indy. Match that with a timeless story , Spielbergs ability to work wonders with children and come across to them and check all the boxes and you have a magical movie that is damn near perfection. And there really is never a boring moment.

1. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 2. 3. E.T. 4. 5. Hook 6. Saving Private Ryan 7. Raiders of the Lost Ark 8. 9. Catch Me If You Can 10. Schindler's List
I was given E.T. as a Christmas present by my grandparents when I was really young, like 4 or 5 years old. We watched it as a family that night and it is A) one of my earliest memories and B) one of my most cherished memories. I also had nightmares that night.
I love that movie very much.
Of the 3 movies left on my list I knew that 2 would be very high up, and it appears they're fighting for the top spot. My #8 is likely not one of them and I'm curious to see if anyone else voted for it. I thought it was a very underrated film.

SPR is my favorite movie maybe of all time. So I'd clearly want it to come in #1 overall, but can't fault folks for #3, especially with Jaws and Park yet to come. Guessing Jaws @#2 and Park @#1?

Just watched Jurassic Park the other night for the first time in awhile and unlike some other movies , it actually does hold up quite well. I kept it down on my list because it takes too long (for me) to get to the actual dinosaurs and the exposition and set up isn't that fun - but once the ride starts the movie is an absolute blast and I would stay and watch any part after the T-Rex gets out if I were flipping through the channels.
As much as I get bored by certain parts in the beginning , it still also shows the magic of Spielberg and your anticipation , but then the dinosaurs show up and you really get what makes Spielberg movies special - he just makes you feel like you are there going through everything the characters are and again - he uses kids to perfection to really seal that connection. Love it.
Also interesting to note , and to continue blowing Spielbergs greatness: This came out the same year as Schindler's List. Just bananas.

Jurassic Park was #6 on my list. I remember seeing it the theater when I was in high school and I was blown away. I was a huge fan of dinosaurs as a kid and Jurassic Park made my inner 8 year old squeal with joy.
One small downside of the movie was that I could have gave two fucks about any of the human characters. No investment in them whatsoever. This is the main reason I couldn't quite rank it within my top 5.

Didn't submit a list because when I was going through the wiki I realized I had hardly seen enough of Spielberg's work. Like up until now I have yet to see a single one on the list. If I had JP would've been my #1 for sure. So I'm kinda disappointed it's the runner up.
