First of all i disagree with everybody who said JP had bad characters, and use Lost World as a good counter reference for how a movie can still have great dinosaurs and be absolute shit. I love the kids in the movie and Dr. Grant is good with them.
I hated Lost World for lots of reasons. The characters are all presented as moronic because it’s take morons to do what they’re doing and it ends with a T Rex rampaging a US city out of sheer lunacy.
I don’t mind JP III and I thought Jurassic World was okay (I really liked the parts of it that had nothing to do with a character ranting against dinosaur genetic modification and using raptors as weapons). Lost World 2 though looks doomed to being shitty again.

The Temple of Doom is looked at as a sophmore slump. They tried to make it more kid-friendly which made it goofier and like a lot of sequels, the characters weren't as fleshed out as the original. It still feels like an Indiana Jones movie, but it deviates from the original enough to distinguish itself. Last Crusade is a return to basics, but with more of everything shoved in. Usually it can be a recipe for disaster, but I feel the movie is so polished it gets away with it's lack of imagination. The Red Letter Media review of Crystal Skull is more entertaining than the movie. Even then, it wasn't the worst movie I saw in 2008...that distinction belongs to Hancock. I disagree, Temple of Doom was the "dark" part 2 of a trilogy a'la Empire Strikes Back. It was also the first movie with a PG-13 rating. It is still rated as the worst of the three and I don't disagree but overall all three are very well done. According to my "feel" of the trilogy (Crystal what?): 1. Raiders 2. Crusade 3. Temple

The action is darker, but the comic-relief love interest and Short Round dumb down the movie.
