Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)Finally, Emperor has watched PW's undisputed* favourite movie ever** and c's not favourite film ever. I think it's excellent. The animation is sublime, the story is tremendous, as is the voice acting. What a thrill ride. Action sequences that would be cliché in live action have a whole new dimension in animated style. That final action sequence in the supercollider was a true Marvel. There was a line right at the end of the film where Miles says "anyone can wear a mask." That line after two hours of every single Spiderman introduction starting with "I am blah. I was bitten by a radioactive spider." That's a very particular entry requirement. Apart from that, I have one question. How did Kingpin get so freakin' big? Bitten by a radioactive...blue whale? His backstory was explained in a 30-second flashback and that's all it took to give him a rock solid villain foundation. * disputed
** thanks to The Dark Knight I’m not sure anyone has ever given a proper explanation for it. Like he’s not meta or mutant… supposedly it’s all muscle too. At least at one time that was the case in main comics continuity. And of course you’ll see lots of variations of him too due to artistic interpretation and what not. Also glad you dug it.

I just assumed Kingpin's size was done simply because of the animation style. Turned everything up to 11.

Kingpin just be thicc. He is based on a sumo wrestler but with pure muscle. I assume his full backstory was he was raised dirt poor then discovered lifting, and just lifted nonstop for decades while downing protean.

Watched a teen zombie flick called Unhuman, it's pretty boilerplate stuff, but really sets itself apart in the 3rd act. Ended up being rather enjoyable. Not sure I'd return to it, but a decent watch if you have an hour and a half to kill.

Bank of Dave
This was great, I only checked it out because I had a free ticket to use and was plenty surprised. Really cool feel good movie,
Sweet As A character study with minimal character development and plot points resolve themselves off screen.
EG the main character’s mother is an alcoholic, she goes off on this safari. Comes back and her mother is sober with no explanation as to why and it tries to play it off like her daughter going on the safari fixed it??
Counsellors were absolute useless and shocked when at risks kids with difficult behaviour acted difficult.
The Black Demon
This could have been a dumb fun shark film but it’s almost all about the oil man and his interactions with his family and people on the rig. Shark is barely in it and the less is more approach doesn’t work at all for this. The water not moving despite this shark being megaldon shark being ridicously large is amusing.

Black Demon was so damn bad. Also Book of Dave or Bank of Dave System ? As Bank of Dave did not get a lot of press but did get a lot of acclaim from those who did see it. Also based on a true story of a man trying to open a freaking bank to support his local community, which is simply not done.

Saw new Spooder film. Was great animation and well done design, but just did not really get into it. Story was all over the place at times, some scenes felt like they just went on and on and felt like they went more form than function. Looks great, characters were great, but like the story just did not work for me. It had some good moments, but overall felt like a mess. Feel they went for quantity over quality and would have been a far better film if cut to a solid 90 minutes focused on a tight main story with some of the longer sequences being streamlined and then releasing this full version as a director's cut.
Overall just not a film for me. Animation was fixed though so did not get sick which was nice. Also will still watch the third one despite not really liking this one.

No nausea this time. They did not use that smudge animation effect much this time around. Found a handful of other non-epileptic people had the same issues with the first movie in scenes using the using the 12 fps smudge animation style. Same people are the ones who will puke with the mix of motion blur and low fps in gaming or bad VR.

Just rewatched Apoc Now, with the Final Cut. Still one of my absolute favorite films. Never gonna be a film like this ever again due to the absolute gross excess and pure chaos that went into making it.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Theives was a decent time, wasn't anything deep, but the cast had great chemistry, and it was mostly fun. Pity its performance likely precludes it from a sequel. I'd watch it again.
Babylon: Too long, too indulgent, good performances all around, but is a bit too meandering. It's not a bad movie per se, but not good enough to justify the run time. I enjoyed the build but it all just kind of unravels in the latter part of the film.
3000 Years of Longing: I enjoyed the trip through history, but another that slips off in the final act. Hinging on Swinton and Elba was a smart choice, as their performances carry the movie well enough.
Avatar: the Way of Water was an amazing spectacle (though there's an odd dissonance with the movement of large creatures and machines, I'd have to rewatch the original, I don't remember that issue before), probably better than the first, but still short of greatness. I'm not sure if their building up a redemption arc for that certain character, but I don't think it'd fit with the character, committed to many unforgivable acts. Either way, it carried its runtime better than Babylon, but still a bit too long for its own good. I could give or take a rewatch...it sure is pretty.

Pity Dungeons and Dragon was a box office failure. Really did want more films.
Rewatched Lord of the Rings saga. Did the uncut versions and enjoyed it far more than I did the original ones when they released. Truly the peak of high fantasy in films. Also makes me wish for a Warhammer classic series. I assume if 40k does well, they will also start to milk classic. Pretty much the largest untapped IP right now.

Vengeance is probably one of the most interesting movies I've watched in a while, it wasn't perfect or anything but was a fresh and interesting idea that tried to accomplish a lot of different things at once. I always found BJ Novak to be one of the worst parts about The Office but he really nailed this mix of black humour with poltical/social commentary.
I also gave Dune a go this weekend and was generally entirely bored. Seemed completely unnecessary to split it into two parts. Part 2 might be a bit more interesting with Zendaya actually in it.

Book is three acts basically. First film covered act 1. Film two will do 2 and 3. Book really gets interesting in act 2 when Paul goes to the desert and learns his destiny. Zendaya will have a strong role in this, and be a major part of film 3, Dune Messiah. Sadly they plan to end at film 3 and not do Children of Dune and fully end the first major arc.
Chani, Zendaya's character, will become a badass most likely in film 2 as well, and will likely be who the film uses to show the Freemen ways and teach Paul.

Adipurush Didn’t want to support Ezra Miller so instead of seeing The Flash we saw this instead. sandylea joked that maybe there is more controversy over this film we don’t know about. Was a fun adventure film save for its bad to inexcusable CGI, it’s bad all around but some shots look worse than some late 90s garbage and should have been cut. Also I wish they had keep the intermission in as they do in eastern countries as the film is 3 hours long. It just flashed up “interval” then didn’t have one . Currently in Auckland,NZ at the moment with quite a large Indian population so cinema was pretty busy. So I had fun awful CGI aside. I look up thoughts on this film and Indians, especially Hindus are outraged at this film with how certain characters are depicted and the language used calling it an insult to Hinduism with people in an uproar. I don’t know anything about the source material but apparently this was a really bad adaption of the Ramayana. But for an ignorant westerner like me I enjoyed it, just felt like Indian World of Warcraft

Fast X: The newest installment in the Fast franchise, brings all the high-octane action one would expect from the series. I liked the additions of the two Aquamen (Alan Ritchson and Jason Mamoa) to the cast, especially Mamoa whose character was pretty eccentric, to say the least. Also dug the cameos, and can’t wait to see them get bigger roles, in the next movie. Flamin’ Hot: This is the story of the guy who invented the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. No idea, how much of this is accurate, but either way, I rather liked this movie for what it was, and thought it was interesting enough. 2023 Films SeenAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham Cocaine Bear Creed III Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Evil Dead Rise Fast X Flamin’ Hot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 John Wick: Chapter 4 Knock at the Cabin M3GAN Missing Murder Mystery 2 Peter Pan & Wendy Plane Scream VI Shazam! Went to Elementals, which is good but not really surprising or touching any new ground. It still got me emotional at the end, but it’s a father daughter film that I watched with my daughter on Fathers Day so that probably was part of it.
Then watched Influencer with the wife and kid on Shudder. Fun little suspense/horror movie set in Thailand.

He started as a janitor and worked his way up is true, but the premise of the movie, him having invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos, seems to be an outright lie. Frito Lay even said at the time there was no evidence to support his involvement in the creation of the brand, but the movie's good publicity, so they don't seem to making a big deal out of it right now, instead just vague platitudes for his contributions to the company. Seems like the one thing he really did invent, is a good story to sell to the public.

Funny but very predictable comedy film but I’m just so happy to see a return to adult comedies even if it wasn’t a home run.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts It’s giant alien robots blowing shit up, what’s not to love. Joking aside though, I enjoy the Transformer movies for what they are, plus growing up as a fan of Beast Wars, it was pretty cool to see the Maximals on the big screen, I can’t even lie about that. Plus near the end there, I got a huge smile on my face when… Noah was being recruited to join the G.I. Joe's. I mean how awesome would that crossover be? I’m all in on that happening.

You Hurt My Feelings (not to be confused with the similarly titled J-Law movie System posted about) is a lovely little film with some very clever (and genuinely funny!) writing backed up by quality acting. There were some beautifully subtle connected threads in the relationships of the different characters, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus is just an icon. See this one!

Transformers Rise of the Beasts There is less humans, a shorter run time and more transformers/maximals so that was a plus but the pacing was jarringly quick and it felt like it was a kids film not a family film at times meaning it was almost insulting how simple it was. But it delivers what was promised and the Tease for the GI Joe crossover
Was cool.

Was cool. Yes, I loved that tease. Unlike with Shazam earlier in the year, there's a chance that that tease actually leads somewhere.
