Would it blow your mind even more if I was to tell you it was actually released in '93?
I used to make the same mistake all the time. For whatever reason, I couldn't fathom the movie being released any earlier.

I've been on this complete old school action movie itch (with some other old-school movies gonna be thrown in, obviously) since I never really grew up on that stuff and haven't seen most, and it makes me sad I didn't.
I've now watched the first three Die Hard movies, Rambo, Predator, and They Live so, and I've had a blast.. Die Hard, Die Hard 3, Predator, and They Live are now definite movies I could easily watch over again, especially Die Hard and Predator. Rambo and Die Hard 2 I liked, but not that much.

FAT: Loved it. The lead character whoever he is was great. He just feels like he's playing himself. A very genuine look at an obese man and his struggles with food addiction. It's funny but also jars you into some dark and depressing moments. Fantastic film. If I had seen it back in 2013 I'm sure it would have been on a top 10 list.

I've rewatched a lot of these over the past few months(for the first time on my 4K rig), so much fun, They Live is like the greatest 80's movie ever!

I watched Trumbo today. It isn’t exactly a nuanced take on the black list or the Hollywood ten, but I didn’t know much of the story and it was interesting. An easy way to spend two hours.

Went and watched Ant Man and Wasp last night , and yet again they prove they really don't make bad movies. It was really fucking good , the action set pieces were up there with anything I've seen from Marvel yet with the shrinking and expanding and of course Paul Rudd is forever charming. I loved the first one and this one is right up there with it.
Also that post credits , or mid credits scene - fuuuuuuckkkkk.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington It's a shame that many people refuse to watch old films, because they are missing out on some true greatness. You can think of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington as the political version of It's a Wonderful Life. There are clear similarities in the plots. The most common link, however, is James Stewart. He is the ultimate babyface; you can't help but root for him. In both films he has a heart of gold, an unwavering moral code, and is honest to a fault, but in this film he's also a common man thrust into the US senate, where corrupt senators surround him, hoping to exploit his political naivety. His journey is a fascinating one, I fell in love with the character at exactly the same pace as his lone supporter did. Not only does the film succeed as an effective demonstration of political corruption (probably more relevant now than it was in 1939), but it's also a heartwarming character film. In fact my favourite scenes are where James Stewart's character, being mentally broken by the system, is propped up by his lone supporter, the initially skeptic but good-hearted secretary.

Yeah, got to Ant-Man and the Wasp myself, funny, great action, well paced, Rudd's Ruddiness...easily the best second feature not named Winter Soldier.

Are all second movies (aside from WS) just meant to be shittier filler while biding time for a dope third installment (except in IM's case)? IM2, Thor 2, and Avengers 2 all seem like steep drops IMO from the first installments and third installments (again, minus IM... as bad as IM2 was, IM3 was imcalcuably worse).

I think the MCU having awesome third movies is uncharted territory. Most of the time the sequel is awesome and the third part sucks.

I was/am sort of on board with the 2nd movie thing , but GOTG 2 was great as well - so I think they are batting like 50/50 maybe.
Winter Soldier , GOTG and Ant Man and Wasp are all great though.

So Wife's out at a girl's night, and stemming from my rage over Empire Strikes Back making the Top 10 80s Action Movies, I decided to rage watch The Last Jedi. Fully expected to hate it, was a little disappointed that I didn't. I didn't see the previous "Episode", but that didn't really seem to matter. Plot was easy enough to follow. Some dazzling, graphic visuals throughout. Think my favorite might've been the aftermath of the lightspeed kamikaze finishing move on the Dreadnaught. Biggest gripes how long it was, some pacing issues (which might've been due to how long it was), and some stuff that didn't really need to be in there IMO (which contributed to how long it was). Surprising favorite elements included those baby seal owl things, and especially Chewy's interactions with them; appearances by Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro; and the overall feeling that this was just a big homage to the original trilogy. Not sure it's worth going back now to check out Episode VII though. Someone convince me. Did see Rogue One though... Enjoyed how bleak that one was, felt like a bit of a unique departure from what one is used to with Star Wars.

Episode VII is good and doesn’t feel nearly as overlong as VIII (which I liked too). Plus Han Solo! (I don’t really like any of the first six Star Wars movies, but new trilogy fun)

I don’t trust anyone that likes The Last Jedi 👀. They aren’t numbered either.
Saw Skyscraper, you know that scene in Deadpool 2 where the girl has luck as a “super power” ? That’s basically the film.

Were there bigger flaws that I overlooked or was being too generous too? It's not like any of the Star Wars movies are masterpieces, so I think I was watching it with a relative perspective to it's peers. If pressed to rank them, I think I'd go like this for Star Wars movies I've seen: 1. New Hope 2. Empire Strikes Back 3. Return of Jedi 4. Rogue One 5. Last Jedi 6. Phantom Menace (sucker for podracing) 7. Attack of the Clones 8. Revenge of the Sith (haven't seen all the way through ever... but Hayden Christiansen is a MISERABLE actor) Haven't seen Solo or whatever Episode VII was called, but my gut feeling is they'd slot in around Rogue One and Last Jedi.

I'm not a huge Star Wars geek either. I can appreciate the charm of the originals, but my exposure to the series was through the prequels which were mostly terrible summer blockbusters. Personally I'm a 3 --> 1 --> 2 in that race, but I haven't had the nerve to go back and watch any of them since I saw them in cinemas.
Similar day with Episode VII which I actually enjoyed when I watched it. I thought the first half of the movie was great and appreciated a lot of the choices the film made. The movie kind of lost me around the time they introduced Leia as the older characters and newer characters didn't mesh well together, but otherwise it was a solid blockbuster.
I've yet to see The Last Jedi but from what I gather, the biggest disappointment is that Episode VII left a lot of things seemingly open for future explanation. A lot of these explanations were either anti-climatic or just poor. Also that scene with Leia seems to piss a lot of people off. I still want to watch it, if only to see Rian Johnson's latest flick. I'm a big fan of Brick, enjoyed Looper and thought his episodes of Breaking Bad were some of the best television of the modern era. If nothing else, the movie should look fantastic.

Always thought the general consensus was Revenge was the best of that trilogy. Guess PI never got to that Nic Cage post credit scene. He was supposed to be Snoke in the current timeline. But he backed out so they killed him off...

A Quiet Place
Only like 10 minutes of dialogue in the film. Very suspenseful. Loved the ending.

Went to the drive in theater:
Hotel Transylvania 3 is officially my favorite of the series. More adult and still, very funny. The dance scene on the ship is my favorite.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was very good. I still liked the first one a tiny bit more. Oh and screw that little girl, Maisie. It's all her fault!!!

The Fountain: I enjoy most of the directors work but this one just didn't grab me at all. I was bored and just kind of drifted in and out and fell asleep at one point. I can at least respect the acting of Jackman in it but the movie just didn't move the needle for me.
Submission: A decent drama starring Stanley Tucci and the lovely Addison Timlin who of course is going to show those breasts which I enjoyed. It's a good one time watch but it does feel like it lacks something to push it past an ok movie into a good movie.
The Houses October Built: I like the premise and I think the found footage style worked in it's favor which usually isn't the case with found footage but all the actors worked really well together and all their conversations felt realistic and off the cuff, which I later found out was because it was largly improved. With all that said though, I think the movie starts to tinker out before you get to the reveal and by that point I just didn't care as much. It's a long journey and doesn't pack the sense of dread that a movie like this needs to really hit a home run.
Very Dark Times: Caught this on Netflix and I really really liked it. Performances so good. Story so good. The brutality in the ending is tragic as your seeing the death of a friendship play out between these two pals and things just go off the rails so horribly. I loved it.

Finally caught The Quiet Place last night , after much anticipation and man was that movie worth the wait , just an awesome idea and premise and damn near flawless execution of it. I really can't say enough about the direction and acting behind that movie - it's too bad that a 90 minute horror/monster movie will never get love from the academy but once again this year I think there is a movie that warrants it.
I told my wife going in that there is supposedly only maybe 10 minutes of dialogue , which made her skeptical and the movie totally flipped her - she loved it as much as I did and was shaken at the end.

Ok no internet all weekend no problem, i got dvds. The 80s action countdown got me in a Bruce Willis mood, i watched The Jackal from 1998 with Richard Greir, damn good movie with Willis spectacular as the heel, hes always just really great with facial expressions. This was just a really well made movie that holds up really well 20 years later.
Then i watched Death Becomes Her stoned this morning, first time watching this in a while and oh my god it gets funnier to me the older i get. Absolutely hilarious even though they tried too hard with some of the over the top slapstick scenes, Bruce is excellent in this as are Goldie and Streep, whole thing reminds me of Tales From The Crypt.
And i watched Last Man Standing for the first time, this was from 1996 with Christopher Walken and Christopher from The Sopranos, action shootem up movie set in the 1930's, story wasnt good at all and the Noir style just kinda came off corny in a boring way. I didnt like it at all, bummer i had high hopes.

Three Billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri -per Wife's raving recommendation- turned out to be a really pleasant surprise. Dug the performances. I get why Frances gets her praise, but man... the more and more I see of Sam Rockwell, the more I be digging me that guy.

Went and seen Equalizer 2 last night , and I don't really have a bad thing to say about it. I mean it's Denzel back and kicking ass - it wasn't revolutionary or groundbreaking but it was a really fun two hours and I can't wait to rewatch 1 & 2 again back to back. I do love how it's one of the few action movies brave enough to barely ever show their hero vulnerable. It's a nice take on it.
