Finally watched One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest yesterday. What a great cast of cooky oddball actors, Jack Nicholas, Christopher Loyd, Danny Devito, Brad Dourif, Vincent Shiavelli. I've only recently realized just how underrated Brad Dourif is, his claim to fame is being the voice of Chucky(which is five star work) but man he should have won some type of an award for his guest performance on the X-Files episode "Beyond The Sea"(season 1), also he was great in a guest role on an episode of Tales From The Crypt. I was marking out for Vincent Shiavelli appearing though, just like Dourif he was phenomenal in a guest appearance in X-Files, the carnival freak episode from season 2(I forget the name, probably the GOAT episode of X-Files though). Shiavelli was also a guest star in an episode of Tales From The Crypt(the one about the homeless being eaten by Ghouls, co-starring that one dude from Wings). I guess Shiavelli's claim to fame would be his performance in the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore movie Ghost but to me I'll always love him for his role as the mad scientist in the Sega CD FMV light gun shooter game "Corpse Killer". So yeah, good luck ever remaking this movie and putting together a cast as perfect as this one(I'm sure they will try one day). As far as the movie itself though I thought it was very good but not great. I enjoyed it but probably wouldn't put it in my top 100(which I plan on making one day). Also Friday I picked up a set of all 4 Rambo movies at Wal Mart for $7 so I binged watched the first 3 movies yesterday on my 4K rig. I have never actually sat down and properly watched the first Rambo movie First Blood until yesterday. I've seen parts of it on TV but it's like I always catch it in the middle or towards the end, it's very different than the second and third movies and honestly I've always thought it was not worth watching because it wasn't as over the top, from the parts I seen it seemed kinda boring. But watching it yesterday I actually really enjoyed it, maybe even more than 2 and 3. Part 2 and 3 are a lot of fun but I don't know, I don't think I would put them on the level of the GOAT action movies like Terminator 2, The Rock, Bloodsport, Out For Justice, etc. Still excellent 80's action nonetheless, I remember as a kid I could never sit still through these whole movies, they would get me so jacked up I would have to go outside and play rambo running around jumping off trees using sticks for bazookas and pine cone grenade launchers. I never liked the 2007 Rambo though and have no plans on rewatching it anytime soon, pretty much encapsulated all that I disliked about 2000's action movies compared to 80's-90's, just lacked all of the charm and just felt really bland and heartless, in trying too hard to be cool and bad ass they lost the fun factor that comes along with being cheesy.

Just watched Coco. Fucking great. As always.
It makes me wonder... Can Pixar really do no wrong? Should I finally go back and check out Cars?

Then again I don't think Pixar pictures are all masterpieces since they are essentially just Toy Story redone every time (two opposites who have to learn to work together to get back home).

Cars 1 and 3 aren't terrible (still at the bottom of the list as far as major Pixar films go)...2 is though.

I too just watched Coco , and while it was far from bad because Pixar doesn't make bad movies at all , I didn't find it nearly as great as some of their best works either. It was fun and cute but didn't really connect with me like so many others. I don't think it would make my top ten.

Just saw Solo. I liked it more than Rogue One in all honesty. And that cameo...

As much as we liked Coco, I'm not sure it cracks my or Wife's Top 10 either.

Over the weekend I watched two movies that totally did not help my mental well-being (not that I'm having problems, I just shouldn't have watched these back-to-back, maybe...)
These are both movies my wife wasn't really interested in watching so they sat in my Netflix queue forever. But she's still a few weeks away from joining me out in BC so I can watch all the Netflix I want! I ain't scared!
Snowpiercer I've been meaning to watch this movie for about 2 years. I finally got around to it and holy shit. What a good film. You don't feel like you just sat through a 2 hour movie because it just grabs you and doesn't let go. It's one of those movies that just gets right into it. There isn't some 20-minute build to something, then more building and talking and character development, then something else happens, then they build to the climax...nah. This movie starts and if you're not ready, well, sorry. It's literally "here's the characters, here's what they're doing, OK IT'S HAPPENING WE'LL FIGURE OUT THE REST LATER." And then after a bunch of crazy action and some downright zany/weird characters and scenes, Chris Evans rips your goddamn heart out with his final monologue. It's seriously horrific and one of the best monologues I've ever seen in a movie.
Sicario When this movie hit Netflix a friend recommended I watch it, then I forgot about it until recently when I saw an ad for the sequel. So I spent my Sunday night watching the horrors of a drug cartel and the sadistic things some men must do to stop them. Super great fun. I'm not going to say much about the movie because I really can't without giving away some amazing details, but you should watch it. It's done by Denis Villeneuve, the French-Canadian director of such light-hearted comedies as Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Prisoners and Polytechnique (a really good Canadian film about the Montreal Massacre). It's seriously great.
Both movies get a hundred stars.

I loved it and thought while not quite as up there with Prisoners and not quite packing the emotional punch of Arrival, it was very entertaining just trying to figure out just what the hell is happening. My appreciation for it was amplified when I watch Chris Stuckmann break down the film on his youtube channel and he connected a lot of dots that really make the film come together more and it was better on a second viewing. It's just such a unique movie the way it's shot. It sometimes has that David Lynch type of vibe to it which I really like. Anyways if you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out. Anyways I'm feeling lazy as shit tonight so think I'll finally get around to watching Thor: Ragnarock.

Saw Upgrade...fun little sci-fi flick, doesn't linger too long on anything, once it really gets going, it keeps going. It's nothing deep or revolutionary, but entertaining start to finish, great show case for Logan Marshall Green. His reactions to all the things he was doing, but purely as a spectator, were pretty great. Solid finish, strong recommend.

Thor: Ragnarock I had put this movie off for awhile because I was just never that into Thor but I heard so much praise for this one in particular that I had to check it out and yeah...Fucking AWESOME! Loved it. It never hit a lull, all the characters were entertaining, battle scenes felt epic, and it was funny as hell to boot. This is just a great stand alone movie and it felt like that. My issue with the other Thor movies were they just felt like a set up for the eventual avengers movies but this was good to hang it's hat on just as it's own thing much like Winter Soldier was for Captain America even though this was far better than Winter Soldier. Anyways it was a very fun time and definitely one that has some rewatch value.

Hereditary
Great film, a different take on what actually was a by the numbers horror film. My partner wanted to see it, asked me see it with her.,, I did, and now she’s upset with me because I liked it 😂. She thought it was one of the worst films she’s ever seen so not for everyone.

Watched Hereditary tonight. I’m not the horror fan in the house so going to a movie with the kind of reviews Hereditary is getting (scariest movie ever~!) wasn’t top of my list but I went ahead and went and... was not scared much at all.
It’s a perfectly fine movie, but it’s a slow burn that just didn’t hold up to the weight of expectations well.
I gave it a 5/10 to my wife earlier.

Oceans 8, other half wanted to see it. I feel asleep during the opening (Not films fault) but from what I saw it seemed like a pretty basic plan.
I’ve only seen one scene from the Ocean’s films (was on at work) but I assumed the planning was much more elaborate in past films?

Caught Incredibles 2, while I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the first, that's just a testament to how much I enjoyed the first, because this still has as much charm as you could hope for. It's predictable, and the villain is no Syndrome, but enjoying start to finish, good laughs, good heart, can't really think of any time I felt like it was dragging. Quality flick.

Finally got around to watching Wonder Woman this afternoon. Solid flick , I enjoyed it enough but mostly because Gal Gadot had such a great command of the screen. Her charisma really carried me through it. Along with the fact she's easy on the eyes.

Wood Shock: Boring. I didn't even know what this was supposed to be.
Delirium: I liked it. I thought Topher Grace did well and they did enough disguising to make you wonder what was really going on.

Just finished Heat for the first time.
Aside from being long, it was pretty awesome.
Might have to go in the running for whenever we do a Top 10 90s Action Movies countdown.

I developed a irresistible urge to watch Vertigo after it's placement on UT's countdown. The first time I watched this movie was around this time 10 years ago for my university degree which complimented the themes of infatuation and reliving the past. It's amazing what time can do. When I first watched the movie, John Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) came across as a sympathetic pawn in a sadistic plot. I felt he was blameless for the situation and shouldn't have been so naive. Having watched the film for the half-dozen time, I found his relationship with Midge to be fascinating. Ferguson has a wonderful friend who clearly adores him and has things figured out, but his desires prevent him from making the right moves. He chases after Madeline, not out of duty, but because of the thoughts he projects onto her. She's the elegant, curvacious, blonde bombshell with a troubled past who could overcome those shortcomings if only she had a strong man to show her the way. He's less concerned about the interests of the husband who wants Ferguson to protect his wife, and more concerned about his role in the relationship. When he fails to fulfill that role, it breaks him, even though there's clear signs that something is amiss. Madeline acts strangely even for somebody who is supposedly possessed by her great grandmother. Her dialogue doesn't feel natural and she appears to struggle to recall simple details or give easy explanations. She isn't a real person, and unfortunately for Scotty, that's exactly the type of girl he lusts for. There's a pivotal scene I initially shrugged off as Midge being jealous and explaining the nature of their relationship, but it actually explains Scotty's problem. When Midge shows Ferguson a painting of her face super-imposed on Carlotta (the supposed ghost possessing Madeline) it infuriates John, as his idealised vision has been tarnished by the features of his friend. In that scene, Ferguson is the selfish jerk who fails to acknowledge Midge's gesture and doesn't make time for the only friend who truly cares for him.
The second half of the film is the highlight of the film and still makes me feel uncomfortable all these years later.
It's easily a Top 5 favourite film.

Unsane: For some reason I thought Ellen Page was in this movie but turned out not to be the case and the person doesn't even really look like her on closer inspection, it was just the movie poster made it look like her. So that was a surprise seeing the credits roll at the top of the film and her name not be on it. Anyways I thought it was ok. I think they probably should have disguised what was going on a little bit longer because I did feel the reveal just sort of happens where it felt that it shouldn't and that just kind of lets the steam out of this one a little bit. So it's just ok. Not one I'd bother to rewatch.
Jackie Boy: This felt like a very unfinished movie. Lots of unlikeable characters just doing unlikeable things. They try and slop this redemption story together to make you feel something for the lead but you just don't. His turn is so flat, there is no journey to really make you sympathize with him. The end is out of nowhere brutal and feels like a whole other movie entirely. Also lots of dong shots. Just not my cup of tea. It had the premise to be good but the execution was lacking.
Braven: Jason Momoa is a fun bad ass as usual. I thought the action was fun, casting was good, and premise while simple and straight forward was well done. It was good.

Saw Incredibles 2 last night. It's the one Pixar sequel that people have actually wanted. Maybe it would've been better to leave it as a "dream match"...

Game Night: Loved it. So funny. Jessie Plemmons had me rolling hard with every scene he was in. Great comedy.
Gemini: Yuck. What the fuck was that? Dull murder mystery with an atrocious ending. This movie just felt unfinished and slapped together at the last minute. Bleh. Terrible.

Upgrade: Fantastic, one of the best films I’ve seen all year.
Sicario Day of the Soldado: I thought this was going to be a cash grab sequel and be awful. Best film I’ve seen all year.
Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom: I’ve seen Jurassic Park as a kid but I really don’t remember it. I assume they are less dumbed down than the World films are? I always assumed the franchise wasn’t just mindless popcorn stuff until I saw the two World films.

I haven't seen the newest one but the first in the reboot series was decent but lacked the magic of the first. It's really incredible that a movie made back in 1994 can still look visually better than something made now.

I’ll have to check it out soon.
