It's not like there are a glut of particularly well received Netflix movies so I'm not sure where that's come from. The popularity seems much more linked to the meme rather than the idea that it's some sort of cinematic masterpiece. I thought it was a fun movie for what it's worth. Yeah exactly. It was unique so the internet took off with it. And you know a million people are going to wear blindfolds next halloween. It wasn’t the Godfather or horror movies but it was still a fun as hell couple hours. I thought it was great

UT, it was on Netflix, so for a lot of people, it's like NJPW in the Tokyo Dome for Big Dave. ******* That’s literally not true. Tons of stuff on Netflix sucks and everyone knows it. You’re being ridiculous. Bird Box could have been released by anyone and I wold have liked it. We just watched it and Bird Box was dope. I’m super picky with horror movies and this one did it for me. Acting was great, story was great, overall it was great. 8/10. I don’t know about you, but any time there’s a remotely edgy or entertaining thing on Netflix, my entire fb blows up. Whether it’s friends or pages I subscribe to, it feels like anything new on Netflix is a cultural revolution.

Well, when you consider a certain segment of the population lists netflix as a hobby... it kinda is a big deal to them.

I don’t have the same experience. Most people I know don’t have cable and just pay for Netflix, CraveTV, or use some kind of streaming device like an android box, or they just download what they want to watch. Cable is a thing of the past in my bubble, and when it comes to Netflix Originals in particular some people like some stuff and some people like other stuff. :dunno:
I know people that hate Black Mirror, I know people that hated House of Cards, I know people that have never watched any of the Marvel shows...is what it is.

I thought Bird Box was fine, not great but not bad. The ending kinda sucked, but the build to it was good.
(Also I think House of Cards sucks, and have never been remotely interested in Black Mirror or the Marvel shows, just to fit into RT’s demo)

So I finally got around, to watching the last two big "nerd" movies from 2018, that I still needed to see.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom: Five movies into the franchise, one should know what to expect going into this. In that respect, it's good for what it is, but there is nothing groundbreaking either with this instalment in the series.
Bumblebee: About 95% less explosions than one would expect from a Transformers movie. As for people who weren't a fan of the Michael Bay directed Transformers films, this just might be the one you've been waiting for.

Murder on the Orient Express (remake): I personally loved it while it seems largely lambasted, but reading reviews, it seems it's more of a note for note remake, which seems to be the thing it's most disliked for. So, I get that. Having never seen the original, enjoyed it start to finish.
The Ladykillers (original): Much in the same boat, the remake of the Ladykillers get lots of flack, but I personally love it. Finally got a chance to watch the original, and really, still prefer the remake. Just thought the characters had more personality, while otherwise being mostly similar. Still, original was a solid watch to see where it all came from.

I thought Bird Box was fine, not great but not bad. The ending kinda sucked, but the build to it was good. Wife and I watched this on the plane to Vegas yesterday and generally agree. We had this below Quiet Place. Enjoyed it enough though overall. We've also recently watched or had one or the other rewatch: Black Swan Annihilation A Knight's Tale Black Swan was a fucking intense ride, which Wife convinced me to watch after I took her to the ballet for Christmas. The movie was surprisingly awesome. I enjoyed it way more than I ever would've guessed. Annihilation had me wondering if we'd somehow stumbled onto a Natalie Portman kick. Overall, the movie had a lot of promise but it's flaws were too many and ultimately held the movie back from being good. I think the all female casting for the overt purpose of all female casting (was this released around the time of the Ghostbusters reboot?), some logic inconsistencies, and a poorly executed twist ending were the negatives that stood out to be. The seed of the idea had so much potential though, which makes this extra disappointing. A Knight's Tale was great fun and rekindled my Olsen twin hatred for how they killed Heath Ledger, taking him away from us way to soon.

Venom.
It's good but not great by any means, similarly to Deadpool. It won't change your life the way Marvel's best and brightest will. Hardy is great fun in, as the down and out Eddie Brock and would suggest, has enough charisma to carry a franchise. But whether it was a lack of a decent villain, I don't know, but at no point did I feel Venom wasn't going to win here. But it's certainly a fun movie.

Split - TBH when I first saw previews for Glass I thought it was standalone. Much like the 2nd Sicario I had no idea it was a sequel until I did my wikiresearch. I liked this, but it was kinda disappointing we didn't even get to see half of the personalities. But at a 2 hour movie that's not likely to work. It was cool we did get a "post-credit" tying both movies together. I wonder if that was just a whim for the hell of it or if it was planned all along. Whatever I'm ready.

A Knight's Tale is a really underrated flick for me, great cast, ton of fun, well paced, just not much to dislike for my money.

It had a good soundtrack too. I remember watching it in my American History class.
For some reason?

Glass:
Loved it, A perfect response to the over saturation of comic book films and their tropes. Ironic that most critics are panning this after eating up every by the numbers comic film that comes out.
The marketing really hurt this, a few walk outs in my theatre from people who thought it would be an action packed superhero film to take children to. The children that remained looked bored AF.

If you've watched Unbreakable you should know what you're in for. But I guess most people haven't seen Unbreakable and had no clue Glass was a sequel to that. I certainly didn't know until I did some research after seeing the what-the-fuck ending of Split. Speaking of Split, that was a pure psychological thriller, so people's expectations may have been set for that. Glass is a sequel of Split as well, I believe.

It’s school holidays and summer in Australia, I feel like the parents just saw a colourful poster/action style trailer and thought it would be a fun blockbuster for their kids & to stay out of the heat. I know it’s a sequel etc, but your average dumb ass moviegoer won’t necessarily. I mean “Coke Zero” changed to “Coke No Sugar” because Coca-Cola said people didn’t realise Zero had no sugar in it, despite being its Tagline 🤦🏻♀️.

Like Stars on Earth
It was...good. I wanted to shut it off the first half hour or so. It wasn't that bad but it was annoying. Just people calling a dyslexic kid an idiot repeatedly. It got a lot better when the teacher showed up with a musical number. Ended up being a pretty film and decent story. It was very unrealistic and had an overbearing message though with way overkill dramatic music at all times. And it kind of shoved the message down your throat. Even the teacher had this whole better than you attitude and kind of acted like a dick but then people still liked him which made no sense.
Anyway, I'm glad I watched it.

Father Figures: Decent comedy, not hilarious, but a good bit of heart with some decent chuckles. Completely inoffensive, run of the mill, but the cast and chemistry made it an easy watch.
Hellfest: Okay enough, solid kills, but never quite goes anywhere and fizzles out at the end. Better than a lot of schlock horror these days, but nothing memorable.

Man, Super Mario was such a huge disappointment when it came to turning something I loved as a kid into a movie.
At least Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were so bad they were good in a way, and at least those two stayed truer to their source material.

Mary, Queen of Scots: More like Queen of Boredom 😮😮🔥🔥🤦🏻♀️
Imagine if the most boring episode of GoT was directed by Lena Dunham and had it’s run time doubled.
This makes Blade Runner 2049 seem fast in comparison (I like 2049 but we can all agree it’s slow)

Halloween (2018) - I thought it was good but not great. I like the way they went with it being a direct sequel and not acknowledging the sequels - even if I love the sequels. I thought the the ending was actually really well done and it sort of swerved me. I was screaming at the stupidity of JLC shooting at him through the floor and giving up their hiding spot until the ending revealed the long term plan.
My main gripe was the gore , the original Halloween relied so little on the actual gore and killings and that's what makes it remain special IMO. It was as true of horror as you're going to find and I do wish the remake would have stayed more true to that instead of going with the gross out factor too much. That's enough to knock it down a peg or two for me and I'm not even someone who hates gore but it bothered me that they shoehorned it into this movie.

The Cured. Interesting premise, the first 50 minutes is really great with story telling but it just plummets hard afterwards. The last 40 minutes feels like forever. Very disappointing.

Stuber
I probably shouldn’t talk about this too much since I signed an NDA to see it, but Stuber was a strong candidate for the funniest movie I have ever seen. Batista somehow remains a fairly good actor throughout and Kumail Nanjiani has genius comedic timing.
Definitely be looking forward to this one, guys.
It elimimated all heat Kumail generated with me from when I tried to watch Big Sick and almost made me want to give it another try.
