Watched From Dusk Till Dawn, I have this weird memory of teen friends showing me at least the Salma Hayek scene. It's really my only memory and thought it was HOT AF as a loser kid. Obviously after 2 decades of high speed on demand 4k porn it isn't as great as I remember it. Movie was good overall though. Just LOL @ QT getting his rocks off for NO REASON.

Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings. Another fine entry in the MCU.
{Spoiler} The big draw of the movie is Chinese-American representation and to achieve this they made Shang-Chi as plain as humanly possible.
He's just an unassuming millenial stuck as a valet driver paying off his college debt and wasting time at kareoke bars with Awkwafina who he treats as a friend despite them obviously being right for one another.
They did make sense of this by having him try to run from his past where he was a 14 year old assassin who had been trained for years to avenge his mother but the choice makes the movie feel very safe. Like the whole Chinese-American diversity stuff was such a big stretch that everything else had to be overly-Marvel to the point where they snuck in four cameos.
In fact, they tried to address the criticism fans had with Iron Man 3 by retconning the Mandarin and making him Shang Chi's father who is the main antagonist of the movie. It's kind of a throw-away detail that doesn't add much other than give Ben Kingsley an excuse to rock up. Remember Tropic Thunder and how they had Ben Stiller re-enact Simple Jack? It's a similar deal here.
It's a relatively safe movie but I'll say the action sequences were really well put together and wouldn't look out of place in something like the Raid. The scene that sets the entire movie in motion on the bus was great and felt really violent for a Marvel movie.
While I thought the characters were under-developed I thought the actors did a good job of bringing them to life with Tony Leung as Shang Chi's father really standing out. He carries the weight of being this evil force but at the same time he's a grief stricken husband who lost his wife and just wants things to return to what they were.
As an MCU movie I'd say it's above par but it's not challenging the status quo nor does it have that auteur touch that something like Guardians or Ragnarok has.
Free Guy
It was a solid enough popcorn flick. I feel like this tried as hard as possible to appeal to a wider audience so it wasn't as creative as it could have been and it took a few liberties in terms of Guy becoming a cult figure. Does mainstream media really cover the nitty gritty of GTA V or Fortnite? A lot of that stuff rang false but really it wasn't looking to be high art or even the Truman Show so as a simple popcorn movie it was an easy way to spend time. I was worried at one point Ryan Reynolds was going to get the girl which I thought would have been a horrible moral so I liked that they took the direction they did even though Steve's character kind of felt under-written. If he wasn't Steve from Stranger Things and I knew he was like UT aka the bad boy with the heart of gold it would have fallen flat with me.
Also I may have to start watching Killing Eve - Jodie Comer's rocked that Bayonetta cosplay.
Iron Man 3
Why do people hate this again? I have to 100% agree with Peebs that it was interesting to see an MCU character show some actual character development and I thought Guy Pierce played a compelling villain. The final sequence was really good too, it felt like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with an actual budget. Was it because Happy was sidelined for half the movie?

The Hunt was awesome. I love dark comedy in general and Betty Gilpin from GLOW is a straight up badass as the main character. Plenty of genuine laughs to be had with some surprisingly nice allegory at times. Great supporting cast too, as Glenn Howerton from Sunny and Ethan Suplee from My Name Is Earl make appearances. Hillary Swank also nailed the main antagonist role in my opinion. She wouldn't have been my first choice had I been casting it, but she certainly leaned into it way better than I thought she would.

Malignant:
Glad I went into this blind, absolutely chaotic film. Recommended if you love gory films and don’t mind if they get a little cheesy.

I was considering watching Malignant. Is it a pure gorefest or is there a psychological element to it? There’s definitely a psychological element to it, whether you’re happy to go along with it is another story. Have seen people say it’s a masterpiece others say they thought it was atrocious, so very mixed response.

Copshop (Joe Carnahan, 2021)
I didn't have particularly high expectations for Copshop, based on the brief description I read. Thought it would be a fun way to spend the evening, a fairly mindless action thriller that I could enjoy and forget about.
Not only did I enjoy it a lot, but I won't be forgetting about it for a while.
The basic premise is that a man gets himself deliberately arrested to avoid a hitman. The hitman does the same thing, he gets put in a different cell, and the film takes place in this middle-of-nowhere prison. Frank Grillo is the man. Wikipedia says he is in the MCU as a character called Brock Rumlow. Fair enough. Don't know him. Gerard Butler is the hitman. He's the "star". The only one I have heard of. The rest of the small cast, not a clue. But the standard of acting is very high.
From the basic premise, fuelled by a few simmering subplots, emerges chaos and carnage. It's really fun, and everything fits together like a glove. There's no wasted motion, or wasted dialogue. A good amount of set up and pay offs. Where suspense and tension is required, it's done really well. A barrage of unexpected, but exciting twists and turns.
The man being pursued is a mystery at first, but we soon find out that the man is no saint. Of course he's not, hitmen aren't hired to kill good guys. A second hitman enters the picture. Toby Huss plays him as a very unhinged, quirky psychopath, in one of those brilliant performances that only takes up a few minutes of screentime in total yet steals the show. Well, almost steals the show. I'll get to the real showstealer shortly. There's also a corrupt cop. Everyone is the villain. Nobody wins. I found myself trying to figure out who the least bad guy is, because the audience has to pick someone to root for, right? In that sense it resembles The Hateful Eight, but in a more modern setting. And yes, there is a least bad guy.
The clever script slowly peels back the layers through thought-provoking dialogue. Who do we support, if anyone? What decisions do we want the characters to make? It's all very fascinating, a rollercoaster ride of action.
I've left out the undisputed star of the show. The only pure good character in the film, the unexpected protagonist, who has no business with these bad people yet forces herself into the centre of it because it's her job. She's a young rookie police officer, played by Alexis Louder. Nope, I don't know her either, but if she keeps putting on performances like this she'll be a star in no time. She's clever, she's resourceful, and she's fair. She can be harsh and tough and mean, but that's because she has to be. The film acknowledges her nervousness, and also shows how effectively she deals with her nerves. As the young actor is able to effortlessly hang with much more experienced actors Butler and Grillo, her character is able to hang tough with these unflinching veteran criminals, so much so that she earns their respect. It's a commanding performance, the film puts her in the spotlight and she takes it.
The only negative remark I can make about the film is the final scene. No it's not a bad ending. The ending already happened, and it was awesome. This is more like an epilogue, so it doesn't leave a bad taste in the mouth. I just didn't like it, because it was self-indulgence from director Joe Carnahan. But hey, I'm not complaining, Carnahan earned the right to have two minutes of self-indulgence, because Copshop is phenomenal.

I enjoyed Malignant well enough, though I do think they telegraph the "twist" from pretty much right away (not quite as quickly as Us), but I had a good time, and some solid kills to behold.
Candyman was...serviceable. It wasn't bad by any stretch, and not a single lackluster performance to be found, I just can't say it really left a lasting impression, other than the one major disappointment. But it was entirely watchable, did what it was trying to do well, it's not a hallmark horror, but it mostly worked.

My love of going to the movies beat out my general disinterest for Marvel movies so I saw Shang-Chi tonight and it was… not bad. The last thirty minutes, like all Marvel movies, were largely boring set pieces that are graphically impressive but dramatically lacking, but I enjoyed the touches of humor through the first ninety minutes enough to give it a very weak thumbs up. Maybe my top 5 Marvel movies mountain (it might beat out Ant Man and the Wasp even for top 4!)

Malignant (James Wan, 2021)
What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than watching a horror film at the cinema?
James Wan's latest movie is a mixed bag. The first half is tremendous. It's very chaotic and random, but it's never clear whether this is a supernatural horror or something more real. I enjoyed the ambiguity and the mystery. The foreshadowing is all there for the big twist. I didn't anticipate it correctly, but when it hit, it was delivered well and made sense. It stretches reality a little, but not really supernatural.
Unfortunately after that point the film goes full retard. The villain, who is fundamentally an unremarkable human, slaughters an entire police station with a level of martial arts technique that would make Bruce Lee envious. Nightmare on Elm Street meets John Wick. The change in tone is striking andstupid. Not really sure what Wan was thinking. Surprisingly from that they manage to reach a happy, "everything is OK" ending, despite the fact that a dozen innocent cops just died a few minutes prior.
I was entertained, but a bit of a letdown.

Kicking and Screaming - One of the weaker Ferrel movies, but it got a handful of chuckles. Plus I've always found Rachel Harris cosmetically pleasing.
American History X - The ending tricked me. I knew it was 50/50 and I picked wrong. Damn Two Face double coin. First viewing and amazing.
Will try and watch Point Break before HBO takes it down. Though it'll probably go back up eventually if I don't get time this week.

If you watch point break I would like you to confirm something to me or tell me I'm crazy. I believe the first Fast and Furious movie was a direct rip off of point break, they just swapped surfing for cars. I don't want to spoil it for you but there were a lot of common points.

Let There Be Carnage was alright, this one really felt like it needed to be R, as everything was rather timid for what was supposed to be happening. Really slow on the first half. Think I enjoyed the first more. Hell of a post (well, mid) credits stinger though, Venom landing in the MCU.

I just got back, from seeing Venom: Let There Be Carnage with the fiancee myself. I liked it, honestly thought it was better then the first one, and had quite a few laughs. Having said that, an R rating probably would have worked better with a character like Carnage. {Spoiler}the post credit scene, with J. Johan Jameson on the TV, and tying it into the Spider-Man movies, might just make this my favorite Marvel Post/mid credit scene ever.
Also I can apparently add Venom, to the list of comic book characters that the fiancee likes, the other being King Shark (so maybe just the characters that like to eat people). 2021 Movie Rankings{Spoiler}24. Locked Down 23. The Marksman 22. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway 21. Sweet Girl 20. Cruella 19. Thunder Force 18. Luca 17. Wrath of Man 16. Jolt 15. The Tomorrow War 14. Tom and Jerry 13. Godzilla vs. Kong 12. Space Jam: A New Legacy 11. Vacation Friends 10. Jungle Cruise 9. The Protege 8. F9: The Fast Saga 7. Snake Eyes 6. Black Widow 5. Venom: Let There Be Carnage 4. Many Saints of Newark was solid enough, it's not gonna set the world on fire, but was a decent story, well told. Dude who did young Silvio had it down, Young Pauly Walnuts...not so much. Fits nicely with the series as a backstory for Dickie.

Intrusion. New film I just came across on Netflix. It stars Logan Marshall-Green who I just adore, I love the majority of his films so I basically watched it based on that alone. I didn’t watch the trailer beforehand either.
The storyline is super basic, and extremely predictable but it’s a short movie and to the point. It’s a nice filler film when you don’t want something that needs all your brain power or to take up heaps of time.
Worth watching at least once. Not something I would revisit - and DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER. It gives pretty much everything away.

Haven’t sat down and watched it yet but I will soon. David Chase signed a 5 year deal with HBO recently so hopefully that means another movie or a miniseries or something. I wouldn’t mind seeing a time jump to the early 80s when Tony was really coming into his own, and a lot happened to him in that time. The big bust that took down Tony B, Feech, Phil Leotardo, and others, Tony’s father dying, Jackie Aprile moving up to boss, Tony and Carm marrying, and of course when they jacked Feech’s card game that basically got Tony and his crew made.

FREE GUY Was surprised to see this was on Disney+ already. Figured it would suck but the kids would like it, so we all watched it together on Friday.
It actually wasn’t bad. It was too long, and super corny at some parts, but it was essentially a kids movie so it’s forgivable.
Had a few funny moments, action was interesting at times, lots of gaming and pop culture references. Wouldn’t watch it again but my kids liked it and I was able to enjoy it enough that I didn’t want to rip my eyes out.

Watched Spectre again this weekend before going to see No Time to Die on Friday. I was told you are better to have seen it before seeing No Time To Die so wanted to refresh my memory.
I love how it ties in all the Craig Bond films and characters. It's like they are their own universe which I originally didn't care for, but they are likely some of my favorites. While I appreciate the originals for their formulaic charm, I enjoy the Craig films for their deeper storylines and character histories. They were starting to do that near the end of the Brosnan ones, but really take it next level in the Craig films. I find the villain's motives in why he became who he did and how a bit meh, but am interested to see how his relationship with Bond works in this next film.

Pussy looked well enough, but really didn't get much to do, just sort of there. Maybe I'm wrong on Paulie, and it was just because of how long it took me to realize that was Paulie that I didn't really see it. With Silvio, it's ultimately one actor doing an impression of another, as Silvio had very distinct mannerisms. I don't think it could have been done much differently, or better, and still came off as Silvio.

RT, Free Guy was a bit of a sleeper. I hadn't heard or seen anything about it, until it popped up recently and I thought it was a really fun movie. I also subjected myself to Wonder Woman 1984 recently, fell asleep half way through this abomination and based on the first hour, I won't be having a second go at it. Speaking of Cold War era abominations.. Anna. So it's set during the KGB days. I had to google what year the KGB ceased to exist as every character was rocking a late 1990's cell phone and using modern Alienware laptops. One scene saw the main character - a poor crackhead in 1980's Moscow using a laptop to apply for the Navy on the internet. She doesn't have paint on the walls, or food to eat, or shoes, and lives in fear of the secret police - but has what would have been then a $20,000 piece of hardware from the future. I dare say it was written in the wake of Red Sparrow and Atomic Blonde with little regard for the history books.

Oh forgot to mention the best part of Free Guy, my daughter had a fan girl moment when she recognized Jackcepticye as one of the streamers. First time she’s seen a cameo in a movie and been like “haha that’s so and so.”
That was all she wanted to talk about after. I didn’t even know who he was. I know he’s friends with Markiplier but didn’t recognize his voice and had never seen his face before. Now I have a fucking PhD.
Oh and she’s watched Stranger Things all the way through twice and didn’t recognize Steve until I said something. Must have been the glasses. Superman was on to something.

Rewatched Europa Report. Great sci-fi film about a team sent to probe the icesheets of Europa looking for life. Makes me so sad I will not be alive when we do this for real despite us having the technology to send probes under the ice today that we could send for only a few billion dollars. But instead of making contact with the life that exists there, we opt to give us this money to the richest members of society so they can play in low earth orbit.

Fast Five was hilariously good fun. Fast Five is when the franchise really took off for me, went from being Point Break with cars and other mediocre follow ups (and the dog turd that was Tokyo Drift), to an over the top action extravaganza with just as much fun as stupidity. The epitome of the popcorn flick, its purest form, all flash, no substance...but in the best of ways. Caught Promising Young Woman, nice little suspense/thriller, cast all does well, I think it hits the target it was aiming for exactly. While I'm not sure it's something I'd return to with any regularity...well worth a single watch.
