The Addams Family (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1991)No essay today. This is the first time I've seen The Addams Family at any length. I thought they would be right up my alley since it's got that goth/occult/morbid appeal, but didn't really work for me. Roger Ebert summed it up best. "There are a lot of little smiles in "The Addams Family," and many chuckles and grins, but they don’t add up to much. I was mildly entertained, but I was hoping for big laughs and with one exception I didn’t find them." Mildly entertained is the perfect way to describe my experience. Besides it not being particularly funny, the story wasn't much to write home about either. Some nice set pieces and pretty good acting, but nothing special. Addams Family Values was definitely the superior movie, first was decent enough, mostly just for the brilliant casting all around. Raul Julia alone was worth the watch. 100% agreed. Values surpasses the original in much the same way Judgment Day arguably surpasses Terminator. Or maybe Sister Act 2 to Sister Act is the better analogy here? Anyway, they fine-tuned everything that worked well from the first to make an overall better complete picture. Watched Addams Family Values last night, I agree that it is the superior movie, although it's still a one-and-done kinda movie. The kids, especially the summer camp scenes, were the clear highlights, while the main storyline with Uncle Fester and Joan Cusack was less consistent.

The Suicide Squad: I went and saw this last night with the fiancee, we both liked it and I thought the movie was better than the first one. Margot Robbie as always is fun to watch as Harley Quinn, and King Shark (Nanaue), was a big hit with the fiancee, as well. It’s one of my favorite movies of 2021 so far, so glad I got to experience this on the big screen. Jolt: I gave this a watch, simply because I saw Kate Beckinsale was in it. Outside of Beckinsale, the film also features Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale and Jai Courtney (whose in the aforementioned Suicide Squad movie as Captain Boomerang). It’s a decent enough watch and not a bad way to kill an hour and a half, the ending sets up a potential sequel as well. Like most movies these days, both Jolt and Suicide Squad have post credit scenes in them. 2021 Movie Rankings 18. Locked Down 17. The Marksman 16. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway 15. Cruella 14. Thunder Force 13. Luca 12. Wrath of Man 11. Jolt 10. The Tomorrow War 9. Tom and Jerry 8. Godzilla vs. Kong 7. Space Jam: A New Legacy 6. Jungle Cruise 5. F9: The Fast Saga 4. Black Widow 3. The Suicide Squad 2. Raya and the Last Dragon 1. Mortal Kombat

Went to theater last week to catch Jungle Cruise. Enjoyed the first half, then we learn a key backstory to one of the characters and it mucks up everything I was enjoying. But it was a Disney kids movie, so I don’t want to judge it too harshly.

Watched John Wick 1&2 the last two nights. I really liked the first, but I’m not sure how much I like the second one digging in deeper into the mythology of the world hes operating in.
I’ll watch the third tonight or tomorrow, see where I land.

I hated 1, though 2 was ok, but loved the third one. The third films fleshes out the mythology that was introduced in the second film, so no clue if you will like it or not, but I thought it was awesome stuff.

Had to leave this morning about 20 minutes shy of finishing John Wick 3 (I generally know how it ends). The political structure of the high table and some of its cornier elements are distractions that i don’t love, but there’s still enough fun stuff (horses as weapons!) to give it a milder thumbs up. I prefer in the first two movies the clear direction for Wick’s mission, this one feels like a two hour setup for his next mission.

Fear Street 1994/1978/1666 My wife and I watched the first two over the weekend then the last one last night. Overall I enjoyed them, but this was definitely a trilogy aimed at teenagers that they wouldn't have been allowed to go to theatres to watch. Pretty smooth move by Netflix to release something like this and I'm curious if more will follow. My daughter would absolutely love these movies but there's no way in hell I'm letting her watch them until she's quite a bit older. Stranger Things is the cut off for now.
1994 was a good opener, and I admit at first I only really cared about the soundtrack, but the movie was actually alright and I was happy enough with it to sit down and watch the next two. I thought it was going to be too corny or immature to be able to sit through 3 movies but it was a pretty darn good horror flick. And the lore wasn't super campy or ridiculous either. I mean, it was, but they sold it well.
I enjoyed 1978 a bit less, although it was probably the most horrific of the trilogy. Mindless axe murder running loose at a summer camp for kids. You can imagine where it goes from there. Pretty brutal stuff, even for me. Although, the death I had the most trouble watching came at the end of 1994 just because of how she struggled and how she went (actress sold it really well), this movie was the hardest to get through.
1666 was the best of the 3 imo. I'm a sucker for curses and witches and satanic rituals and all that imagery and whatnot, so this one was right up my alley. I really liked it, and was actually impressed with the range of the actors on the show, playing multiple parts across different movies. It was really good.
I can't see myself ever watching it again unless my daughter wants to sit down and watch them sometime down the road, but they were definitely worth the time. Kinda wish we waited until a little closer to Halloween to watch them but whatever. Still fun.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins: A great origin story for G.I. Joe's most popular character. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, hands down the best live action G.I. Joe movie to date, which granted isn’t saying much, but still. Sweet Girl: I gave this a watch on Netflix, it’s an alright movie with a nice little plot twist near the end (especially since it plays out as a standard revenge flick up until that point). I thought Jason Momoa was good in this, and the actress playing his daughter wasn’t bad either. 2021 Movie Rankings 20. Locked Down 19. The Marksman 18. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway 17. Sweet Girl 16. Cruella 15. Thunder Force 14. Luca 13. Wrath of Man 12. Jolt 11. The Tomorrow War 10. Tom and Jerry 9. Godzilla vs. Kong 8. Space Jam: A New Legacy 7. Jungle Cruise 6. F9: The Fast Saga 5. Free Guy (Shawn Levy, 2021)On the one hand, a video game-themed movie starring Ryan Reynolds sounds awesome. On the other hand, it kinda smells like one of those films I hate, the type with an intelligence-insulting plot that can't follow its own internal logic. Fortunately, my fears were unfounded and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The basic story is that Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a non-playable character in a Grand Theft Auto-style open world game called Free City. Every day is the same routine, he goes to the bank, which gets robbed by a playable character. He reacts in the same way, getting down on the floor and letting the robbers do their thing, along with all the other NPCs. Things happen and Guy gets the abilities of a playable character, and the movie kicks in. So it's part Truman Show mixed in with a bit of The Matrix and a lot of video game references. This is a good thing, and the movie delivered. The action takes place primarily inside Free City but there's also an interconnected plot in the real world. I thought the depiction of a video game industry was pretty good. Lionheart works for one of these money-hungry AAA game companies, and I imagine he's had conversations with his boss similar to Joe Kerry's character's (Steve from Strange Things!) first interaction with his boss (Taika Waititi). The only difference being that I'm sure Lionheart's boss is not a OTT overacted flamboyant personality. I thought he was the main weakness of the movie, but he also generated some laughs. Free Guy is both fun and funny, and the plot makes sense for the most part. There's two fairly big romance arcs, because every movie has to have some love. As expected it all gets a bit ridiculous in the third act, and while I could pick holes everywhere, the reality is I was enjoying the movie so much that I simply didn't care. It had earned its right to over-indulge. Many laughs and smiles in the last 20 minutes, including an amazing cameo from CAPTAIN AMERICA that had the whole crowd laughing. Very fun movie, would recommend.

Very fun movie, would recommend. On the same page as Captain America - the light saber was terrific. My wife has a movie group thing on Fridays so I went to the movies alone for second straight week. This week it was Stillwater, a Matt Damon as a fish out of water in France movie. On the whole I liked it. It had some incredibly anxious moments for me and I found myself invested in the characters enough to be deeply disappointed in some of their choices. Probably won’t be my favorite movie of the year, but willl possibly be the best one.

Love and a .45: Honestly kind of baffled how this was ever decently received, it was trying its damnedest to be Natural Born Killers, but was stillborn. Bad writing, bad directing, bad acting, not even a worthwhile soundtrack (ending on Johnny Cash is a cheap ploy to make you forget how mostly bland it was). But it did have a young Renee Zellweger in shorts as short as shorts short, so, highly recommend.

"Can't Stop the Music" is an absolute abomination of a film. From making the creator of the Village People's songs, a gay French man, into a straight American man and trying to recontextualize the Village People's identity into something painfully heterosexual, it's just awful. And I know most of the Village People were straight, but they catered to a gay audience, their music was written by a gay man, and 90% of their discography was about men having gay sex. For fuck's sake, Felipe is one of two gay men in the actual group and the movie makes him straight. I blame the disco backlash (which was rooted in homophobia and racism) and Reagan. Everyone involved in this movie should be ashamed. Especially Caitlyn Jenner, but she should be ashamed about lots of things.

Candyman still very much in my head. Gonna rewatch it later I think. A lot to unpack in this film. Talked about it in the remake thread, but favorite horror film in a long time, since 1408.
Also while I hated Captain Marvel, this sold me on the sequel. Hate Brie but will support whatever Nia DaCosta does next. Real sad she was hate raided off twitter basically.

Watched Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed tonight. Man this is a dark film. Bob Ross Inc was Ross, his second wife and the Kowalskis, the couple that helped manage him. The Kowalskis were focused on using his fame for profit, particularly to sell a art supplies. When Ross's wife died, they took control of Bob Ross Inc. Right before his death they tried to take full control over everything he had done. In the end his son convinced him to write them out of the will before he died, so they do not own his likeness and did not get his estate. However they kept producing stuff with his name and sued for the rights to the name claiming everything Ross did was work for hire, so they own his name. To stop lawsuits against him Steve Ross and the others sign off rights to the Bob Ross name. So now all profits from anything related to Bob Ross do not actually go to his family, but to the Kowalskis who own him basically against both Bob Ross's wishes and the wishes of his family. The family does not have the money the Kowalskis do, so they cannot challenge them in court as the cost will be in the millions.
What a dark fucking story this is.

Into the Spider verse. Holy shit this was good. Gorgeous animation and art style, top notch story, and having ALL the Spidermen in one film (including SPIDER-HAM!!!) was enough to make any Spiderman fan(really any comic book fan) squee with joy. It helps that Miles Morales is just about the only new generation superhero I like, and this is largely about his growth as a hero and person. Honestly the very best Spiderman film to come out, and that includes ANY of the live action movies. I honestly get why pi and several posters were geeking so hard for this movie.

Miles is like the only next generation hero to really work. He is just such a good character. I REALLY want a Miles live action film.
Gave Candyman a second watch tonight. Yeah this is def one of my favorite horror films of all time. Picked up on a lot I missed the first time. Such a damn good story on it's own, made even better with the Candyman lore being used to tell it.

Film is getting pretty good mainstream reviews. I can see people who are against social messages in movies hating it, but most people seem to think it was at least decent. It is a tighter story than the original one, but lacks the novelty that the first one had. I mean, going into this one we know what the Candyman is. Not sure how enjoyable this will be if you were just not into the original Candyman.
That said, if at all interested in it, Shang-Chi is getting rave reviews as well.

The Protege: A pretty good action movie, with a great cast to boot. Watching Maggie Q as a badass killing machine always puts a smile on my face (It also makes me want to rewatch Nikita as well). “Make up your mind, kill me or fuck me” from Micheal Keaton’s character, might just be the best piece of dialog in the film. Vacation Friends: I gave this a watch on Disney+, I thought for the most part that the movie was pretty hilarious. I thought John Cena was great in this (the rest of the cast wasn’t bad either), though that seems to be a running theme this year for the man (three of his films are in my top ten 2021 releases as of this post). 2021 Movie Rankings 22. Locked Down 21. The Marksman 20. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway 19. Sweet Girl 18. Cruella 17. Thunder Force 16. Luca 15. Wrath of Man 14. Jolt 13. The Tomorrow War 12. Tom and Jerry 11.
