WOW, just watched You Cannot Kill David Arquette, what a wild movie. Crazy scene with him getting a K injection and freaking out. Really wish I could afford that treatment. But great movie about David fighting through depression as Hollywood considers him a joke actor for getting involved in wrestling and his career went nowhere. So he becomes obsessed with this idea that if he only could prove himself as a wrestler he will gain the respect he desperately wants. And everyone in wrestling pretty much decides to "smarten him up," and treat him like shit.
Dude is a weird guy, but unbelievably relatable and lovable.
Really good look at the lowest level of wrestling, the tiny gyms, and of the people DIYing shows and working for gas out of just a love for wrestling. Unlike most docs though, Arquette brought an A plus camera crew with him so it is all shot professionally.

Got 30 minutes into The Power of The Dog and shut it off. What a snooze fest.
Can’t wait until it wins Best Picture so I can complain about it.

The Adam Project was alright but very derivative. Ryan Reynolds is exactly the same in every movie, and the GOTG trend of playing classic rock during fight scenes already feels overdone.

Got 30 minutes into The Power of The Dog and shut it off. What a snooze fest. Can’t wait until it wins Best Picture so I can complain about it. Easily in the top 10 most boring films I’ve ever watched. The ending is cool but the journey to get there isn’t worth it at all

Agree with RT and System that Power of the Dog is a snoozer until the end (but then they just kind of rushed right through that so that was surprising). But I’m becoming less sure it’s going to win the Oscar. Coda won the producers guild award last week so now it’s won two of the big guild awards and has gained significant momentum. It’d be pretty surprising to me for the Oscars to pick something so formulaic, but I’m starting to move my bets that way.

Finally got to see Dog, super cute doggo movie. I was expecting a bit more comedy in it based on the trailer, and I feel like some parts could’ve been cut out (eg. Channing trying to get a threesome/chat up women). I guess they are trying to show that he is more lost than he thinks. But it just didn’t feel super necessary.
It tugged at my feels like most doggo movies do, and it’s definitely worth seeing if you enjoy animal/dog movies, or are a Channing Tatum fan.

Bad Times At The El Royale (Drew Goddard, 2018)
Gotta say, that's one intriguing title. Say it with me. Bad Times At The El Royale. What is the El Royale? What are these Bad Times? These are things I want to know. More films should be titled like this. Silence of the Lambs? What the fuck does that mean? I don't want to watch a film about sheep not making any noise. Bad Times With Hannibal Lecter. Now there's a film title. Jurassic Park - Scary Times At The Dinosaur Factory.. I should be a millionaire in Hollywood.
We find out fairly quickly that El Royale is a hotel. The sign says so. Like The Shining, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and classic British sitcom Fawlty Towers, this film is set at a hotel. Except it isn't really a hotel. El Royale is one of those American stopovers where the rooms are set apart from the main building. In my mind, that is a motel. Big difference. It's also a motel with nine rooms. The world's smallest motel. No wonder the place is dead.
Except for the fateful evening where four strangers show up at almost exactly the same time. Already we're on rocky ground because the entire premise of the film rests on an enormous coincidence. And no, it's not revealed that all of these people have something in common. It's literally just an enormous coincidence.
The film itself is a thriller, but more like a mishmash of narrative devices and filmmaking techniques that sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. There's Quentin Tarantino, some Coen Brothers, film noir, and a large dash of that irritating "forced soundtrack" style that I hate (thanks Guardians of the Galaxy). One of the principal characters is a singer, who came to the hotel to rehearse on her way to a concert, and so we hear her singing. Some of these scenes are dragged out a bit too long for my liking, but they make sense. She's a singer, and she sings. Some of the other characters want to hear her sing, and rightfully so, because she's good. But then there are other scenes where some slow, dragged out, largely inconsequential event happens just so the director can flex his amazing 60s soundtrack and shove it all in our faces. Dislike.
The singer, played wonderfully by Cynthia Erivo, is the most interesting character. She's the only honest character in the story; she weaves in and out of the action of all these villains and criminals, but she's jaded, having lived a life full of being exploited by white males. She has a heart of gold and calls it like she sees it.
While there is a central narrative there are so many twists and turns and mini-flashbacks that expert craftmanship is required. Tarantino and the Coen Brothers are able to bash out this kind of script in their sleep and execute it flawlessly, but Goddard is not quite up to the task. The film is never boring, but a few of the surprises did not elicit a "Holy shit!" reaction as intended, more like an "Oh. That happened" response. There is at least one interesting subplot that just ends without a real conclusion, and other plot points are dragged out too long. Chris Hemsworth's character Billy, who is front and centre on the poster, shows up more than halfway through the film. His bit is very long and dragged out, could have been trimmed a little. It ends with a chaotic Tarantino-style shootout, which is fine, but again has been done better many times before.
When I discuss a film's drawbacks I always sound overly critical. It's not a bad film. I enjoyed it more than I didn't. But it has its flaws, it lost a lot of momentum in the third act, the execution did not live up to the ambition, so it's not something I'd ever return to. 6/10.

Watched the rebooted Suicide Squad in prep for starting Peacemaker. It was definitely better than the first, but ultimately only OK, and a long way off IMO from either GOTG. Not sure how optimistic to feel about the Peacemaker TV show now...

Peacemaker redid Cena's character quite a bit. Cena also was given a larger creative role in it it sounded like. It clearly shows too. See some of the same things that made him so good in WWE come out there as well.
Also the story is more James Gunn. He had beats he needed to hit in Suicide Squad passed down from the studio, but here he had almost unlimited freedom.

Man, kind of a huge red flag not to get my hopes up if Soda did not like this. Ti West is more miss than hit for me as it is. I will watch it sooner or later but if it is a miss from me will be the last time I watch him.
Prequel film Pearl should be out for Halloween. Filmed at the same time as this, and is in post production now.

PW's #1 Power Bottom UT, you know Wife's tastes and were a proponent for Peacemaker. What say you? Weigh in please. As it stands, after Suicide Squad, she doesn't want to bother wasting time with Peacemaker.

It really has nothing to do with Suicide Squad and c is actually right in that it’s more of Gunns vision. I’d almost consider it more of an R Rated GOTG than continuation of Suicide Squad. I was lukewarm on Suicide Squad and had similar reservations but give it a few episodes. I haven’t met anyone yet who disliked it.

Horror is not really my thing either so I don't know if I'll be seeking this one out, but I love Jenna Ortega too. She is so good in The Fallout - can't remember if I posted about that previously.

Watched Gamestop: Rise of the Players today. Very cool movie about the person who started the GME run and the early group that formed around Roaring Kitty and the person who first did the research on GME and published the gamestop thesis on WSB. It was basically a bet that the modern console cycle would have disc drives still, and would create a small boast in the stock price which given how low the price was, could be a lot of money. Was really fun and captured the movement well, including WSB originally banning everyone who posted about GME going up until DeepfuckingValue went all in.

The Lost City: I went to see this for date night, the movie has a nice balance of comedy and action. I enjoyed the chemistry between both Channing Tatum’s and Sandra Bullock’s characters. Actually Tatum’s screentime with Brad Pitt was a lot of fun as well, just a great movie overall. 2022 Movie Rankings 10. Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild 9. Dog 8. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania 7. Marry Me 6. Turning Red 5. Fireheart 4. The 355 3. The Lost City 2. The Batman 1. Scream
Okay, yinz were def right. Peacemaker is fucking amazeballs. Glad you're enjoying Peacemaker 🤯

Okay, yinz were def right. Peacemaker is fucking amazeballs. More importantly , what does Wife think? Same. Agreed almost instantly after (or honestly during) that first interaction in the hospital that Peacemaker was already so good and so much better than Suicide Squad. We're in this for all 8.
