I watched Leon: The Professional for this countdown , it was after I made my list so I didn't find room for it but I think I would have had to make a spot had I watched it earlier. What an awesome fucking movie all around , has some great action , incredible heart and drama and moments where you definitely get choked up - that's something you rarely get out of a 90's action movie ... this is probably a cut above the genre.
Portman gives one of the best , if not the best child performance I've ever seen. She is perfect as Mathilda from beginning to end and plays the vengeful yet naive and vulnerable little girl so well. I was a little taken back by how much Besson decided to sexualize her , given her age in the movie but she plays it like a champ and doesn't make it seem as awkward as it should while you're watching it. Still a little awkward though.
Jean Reno is also great as Leon , a quiet badass who ends up with a heart of gold. I wasn't as big of a fan of Oldmans performance but whatever - it is what is is.
Overall the selling point of this movie is the relationship with Leon and Mathilda , I do wish they would have spent a bit more time on him training her but it's not that big of a deal. They have a great bond and great chemistry and that ending is a punch straight to the gut. Happy it made the list so I could be motivated to watch it... one of the better movies I've seen as a result of these countdowns.

Ripon, Thirsk, and Harrogate aren't in Happy Valley but other British shows I've watched over the years, with Thirsk & Harrogate being depicted under pseudonyms. Of course I have heard of Bradford. Isn't that one of the bigger cities in England/Yorkshire? Which British shows are set in those locations? Bradford is quite a large city, in fact the third largest in the county, but it sits right next to the biggest city in Yorkshire: Leeds. I've had countless interactions with people not from Yorkshire who have no idea what Bradford is, and I say "it's right next to Leeds" and they at least understand where it is. I should just say I'm from Leeds.

León: The Professional is awesome. It's an action film with a heart, and great characters. I really need to rewatch it, it's been a long time. UT hit upon most of the strengths of the movie but forgot to mention Gary Oldman's fantastic villainous performance. Everyone should watch León.

I fucking loved this movie. Haven't rewatched in ages. Shame on me. I like to imagine that Natalie's character from this grew up and went on to become her character in V for Vendetta. Meanwhile, I like to imagine Leon survived all the shenanigans and escaped to Fiji for a quiet life as that spiritual guru in Couples Retreat.

I love how you refer to 8 grenades strapped to his chess and blowing up all at once as shenanigans. Lol They do need an actual sequel with Mathilda though.

See, this is why I usually stay out of voting in UT countdowns. I just bring it down with my film rube ways. Stick with what you know, Baker. I never even heard of Leon The Professional before today. Unless I noticed it on Shin's big list. If so, I would have just assumed it was some straight to video B movie. Nope. Look at all those stars! 29th highest rated movie of all time on IMDB! I know nothing. Emperor I'm going to PM you so as not to clutter up this thread with my trademark off topic rambling.

So far these movies were one watch (the watching being at least 20 years ago) and done for me. The Fugitive was closest to making my list.

Leon: The Professional is a great movie, but didn't quite make my list. Once again this reflects more on the depths of 90's action than the film's quality. It's a damn good movie, there were just 10 movies I liked better. It's still very countdown worthy though.

Leon sat at #9 and eventually #10 on my list for a long time, but eventually fell off. Great movie, glad it got lots of love.

I never seen The Professional until I got my 4K curve, it was one of the first movies I watched on it and I was completely blown away by it, it looks PHENOMENAL for a 1994 movie. Some great performances too but I really didn't like how over the top they went with the girl the dude who directed this is a weirdo and this movie is probably like a big favorite for pedos the same way Death Becomes Her is like a cult favorite for trannys. But man Gary Oldman was awesome and it was an otherwise spectacular movie.

Leon: the Professional is one of my absolute favorite movies, for my money, Stansfield is just the best crooked cop in all of film. Oldman has a long history of amazing performances, and that one's still the best to me. One of my favorite moments is when he's talking to Matilda's father about Beethoven, he talks about how he can get a little boring, there's just this great subtle thing, where a person knows they're about to hit a punchline, and laugh to themselves in amusement...such a perfect reaction to the whole scenario from a clear narcissist. Great action, great performances, great heart, just a great movie.

I guess I am clearly in the minority when it comes to Oldman , I liked Portman and Reno better and Oldman came off more annoying than menacing to me at times. To each their own I guess and I'm probably wrong because it is one of the more heralded villain performances ever.

True Lies is one I haven't seen , I've said in the past that I'm not a big AHNULD fan so I don't go out of my way to watch a ton of his movies. However given the comedic aspect to this one I think it's the most likely to get a watch in the near future.
Sucks that it's almost 2 1/2 hours though. Fuck you James Cameron. Christ.

I expected True Lies to be higher as it placed at 4 on my list. Those aerial shots with the Harrier jet were stunning and Arnie churns out another memorable performance.

I'll try and find time soon. I don't know how , he just isn't my type of cheese and I guess I prefer more of the 'every-man' hero as opposed to the roided up monster with a bunch of one liners. Give me guys who can act like Willis , Smith even Cage and have an everyman type quality as opposed to the Arnold types. I just relate to them more. It's not that far fetched really. It's the same reason one could argue liking someone like Stone Cold over Hulk Hogan. I've said before that if/when we do an AHNULD list that Kindergarten Cop and Jingle All the Way would be my top two , non ironically , as I love them both.

I remember True Lies being good but I haven't watched it since the first time I saw it. I think it was on the list I sent Shinobi way back when but it would have been pretty low.

I do love the ludicrous nature of Arnie films, but True Lies was a step too far. Or maybe it was ludicrous in the wrong ways. The fact of the matter is, I spent more time rolling my eyes at the plot, or just being bored, than marvelling in the ridiculousness of it all as I did for Commando or the two 90s Arnie films that did make my list.

Yeah, that was an eye roller. Perhaps the biggest eye roller of the movie. I mean, the fact that Arnie's character knew how to fly that plane in the first place destroys what little suspension of disbelief there was left.

Hooray! True Lies is the first one in a while that I have seen. Originally saw it in the theater while on vacation. Probably opening week judging by its release date. I don't recall a ton of specifics beyond the plane scene Shootist mentioned, Jamie Lee Curtis' dancing striptease, and vague storyline stuff involving both Arnold's & Jamie Lee. But I do remember thinking it was fun popcorn movie. It was under consideration for my #10 spot and would have made a Top 20.
