Yeah, that was an eye roller. Perhaps the biggest eye roller of the movie. I mean, the fact that Arnie's character knew how to fly that plane in the first place destroys what little suspension of disbelief there was left. What!? You're a fickle feckle.

Hooray! True Lies is the first one in a while that I have seen. Originally saw it in the theater while on vacation. Probably opening week judging by its release date. I don't recall a ton of specifics beyond the plane scene Shootist mentioned, Jamie Lee Curtis' dancing striptease, and vague storyline stuff involving both Arnold's & Jamie Lee. But I do remember thinking it was fun popcorn movie. It was under consideration for my #10 spot and would have made a Top 20. You're 2/4 aren't you? Wasn't The Fugitive on your list - that's not bad at all. Especially towards the bottom of the list. The only egregious one being Point Break , as it should be right up your (and 🤯's) alley. I understand not seeing Leon , I didn't even see it until this countdown and I watch far too many movies.

Wow, easily a top 5 countdown fail ever. Ranked horrifically low, True Lies was #3 on my list. You will NEVER convince me or anyone else that actually has eyeballs that there were 6 action films in the 90's better than True Lies. You have the GOAT action star, a smoking hot Jamie Lee Curtis in the skimpiest black miniskirt ever, Tia Carrere as one of the bad guys, action pieces that are both dynamic and hilarious, fantastic comedic timing from Arnold and Tom Arnold and it's all directed by James Cameron being FRIGGIN James Cameron.
Only thing left to say about this.

He.....is......a...... SPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spies knowing how to do everything is a trope as old as film itself. Sure, I'd be willing to accept that in other films, but by that point True Lies had already jumped the shark in my eyes, so I was much less willing to give it a free pass on stupid shit. Now that the striptease is mentioned I remember struggling to figure out what was going on with the plot. I never had a clue why Arnie was pretending to be a client for his wife, who was pretending to be a stripper, for some reason. And I guess I'm the only one who thinks Jamie Lee Curtis is the opposite of hot.

Absolutely not. If Matilda ends up picking up the gun it would completely invalidate the ending of he first movie. Just leave well enough alone.

True Lies was ok. It was definitely on the list of movies I considered, but I deleted my list so I’m not sure if it made it in. I remember my dad loving Tom Arnold more than anything else about it. I don’t like Arnold Schwarzenegger generally sonit would’ve been in the bottom if it made it.

I don’t like Arnold Schwarzenegger generally sonit would’ve been in the bottom if it made it. Honestly, after the lady eye candy, Tom Arnold was probably my next favorite part. And then the special effects/action scenes. Then Bill Paxton's character. (Just realizing that James Cameron seems to love Bill Paxton as much as Quentin Tarantino loves Smauel L. Jackson or Tim Burton loves Johnny Depp.) Arnold admittedly is only like my fourth or fifth favorite aspect of True Lies.

I was a little surprised to see ID make it this high , I don't know why as it got a ton of love in the Will Smith countdown. I just figured with such a wider pool to choose from that ID would be towards the bottom or on the bubble - guess I was wrong. That all probably stems from the fact that I'm not a big fan of ID ... only one Will Smith movie made my list and it surely wasn't this.
That speech is still awesome though. I haven't seen the movie in forever but clips of that speech are constantly brought up or played.

I didn't vote for Independence Day mostly because it had just recently topped a countdown (or should have) and so had its moment in the discussion sun. No problem with it ranking. IMO it is to Will Smith what The Rock was to Nicolas Cage. And yeah, that speech.

Because damn it it's worth posting again. Greatest movie speech ever.
I couldn't put Independence Day on my list though. It felt more like a disaster movie to me than an action flick.

Speed ended up being my #1 , though it was impossible to choose between it and my eventual #2. Subjectively they were like dead equal and I couldn't pick one over the other so I went objectively and decided that Speed was the better all around movie - better overall cast and acting. Equal villains but Speed's biggest advantage was definitely Sandra Bullock. Thankfully my #2 is the next movie up. I was also shocked to see the critics agree with me , no way in HELL would I have predicted a rating of 93% for Speed.
As you can obviously tell by it's ranking though , I fucking love Speed. It's got to be a top five cable movie of all time , where as you can just come into it at anytime , know exactly what part you're at and finish it from there and not miss a beat. Keanu is a great protagonist and makes his 2nd mark of the decade on the claim of being the greatest action star of the nineties and one of the best of all time.
Dennis Hopper though is an incredible villain and elevates the movie from just being another popcorn filler flick , his performance gets an A+ and the character he plays is the perfect type of madmen for these kind of movies. And the best part is that he seems impossible to beat and always seems a step ahead. Just fucking awesome stuff.
Last but not least you got Sandy B. making her big screen splash and setting up her star for the rest of the career. Remarkable how she was able to step right in to a big production like this and go toe to toe with everyone else. It's got to be one of the biggest breakout roles of all time and the movie doesn't work without it.
The gimmick is fun , Jeff Daniels is great , the action is non stop and the stunts albeit a little insane are exactly what you look for in a 1994 action movie. I think it should be higher on the list but at least it made top five. Y'all are definitely sleeping on Speed though.

I've never bothered to watch Speed because I know the gimmick of the film and it sounds kinda stupid. Not a great reason to not watch an action film, I know, but that's how it is.

Speed is good. but it's not great. Keanu is a bit dull as the hero and I found Sandra Bullock annoying quite a few times in the movie. The movie for me was carried by Dennis Hopper, who was a fantastic villain, and Jeff Daniels playing the competent but ultimately doomed mentor.
Speed is not even Keanu's best action role of the 90's much less his career. One movie already listed was better and there is another yet to go.

DHWAV was my #2 and as I said earlier , it was really impossible to rank this and Speed and to be honest - either one of them could have been my #1 on any given day. I love them both and both are two of my favorite movies of all time.
I really can't say a bad thing about With a Vengeance , but I was forced to split hairs and like Sandi B. elevated Speed for me , they went a little too hard and too much with Jacksons racial stuff - it's enjoyable but again ... I was splitting hairs. Also Speeds cast is just deeper.
Anyways that's all being too hard on a great action movie , I love this flick. The Simon Says scavenger hunt gimmick makes for a ton of fun with one of the greatest action hero's of all time in John McClane. Despite my nitpicking of Jacksons character earlier - he and Willis have great chemistry and it makes for some classic interactions between the two.
Jeremy Irons is incredible as well , and there's a nice twist with him. I like him better than Hans Gruber. In fact as I've said before I like With a Vengeance better than the original Die Hard - which is no doubt the unpopular take but it's a movie I grew up with and seen probably a dozen times before ever seeing the original.

OK I'm REALLY curious to see the top 3 now. Because there is only ONE movie I see rightfully beating Die Hard with a Vengeance. Die Hard With a Vengeance was my #2 movie. You have the other GOAT action star paired up with Samuel Muthafuckin L Jackson....what's not to love about that? Jeremy Irons also makes for a terrific villain, and there is the thrill of seeing John McClain is on his home turf for the very first time. The action pieces are stellar, and the tension of the movie as McClain and Zeus move from crisis to crisis is terrific. I don't know what crawled up the critics' ass and died, but 52% is utterly laughable for this tour de force. I don't think it's better than the original like many on PW do, but it's certainly breathing the same air.

The top three isn't really a shocking top three - I expected all of them to at least be in the top five before this started. I agree with your take on With a Vengeance though - it helped the franchise rebound after a mediocre 2nd installment and McClane is really back. I so connected to the scavenger hunt gimmick as well - it's also great that like you said ... he's on his home turf and doesn't spend much of the movie confined to a floor of a building or whatever. I'm sure had I been a little older and seen the original first it would be my favorite but growing up on Vengeance and the expanded world kind of makes the first one seem small in comparison. Both are two of the all time greatest though.

The Matrix. Terminator 2. Not sure what the other one would be. Does Jurassic Park count as action? I'm sure there's an obvious one I'm overlooking. Maybe Total Recall.

Die Hard With A Vengeance & Speed were both on the bottom of my list. I've mentioned before how DHWAV is actually my favorite Die Hard movie. Probably just because I saw it first and/or more frequently than all the other Die Hard's. Speed was in contention with a bunch of other "like but don't love" movies for the #10 spot. Ended up choosing that one over the others for the reasons UT mentioned and also because it's an iconic "90s movie." I only saw Independence Day once. Probably a few years after it came out. I must have been in a bad mood that day. Or maybe I was on one of my short-lived pretentiousness kicks. Because I remember not liking it all and even lumping it in with the dreaded Armageddon. I'll have to give it another shot one day. Fwiw it's one of my mom's all time favorite movies.

Whoa, stunned DHwaV is only #4. Figured True Lies might be forgotten about and take #3 or 4, with iconic 90s gimmick action movie Speed taking the other spot, and then #1 and 2 being between DHwaV and T2.
If Rock or any Nic Cage movie does end up in the Top 3, you know I'll be pleased.

Independence Day was my number 9. This was one of the most anticipated releases of the 90's with memorable trailers to build it up. It didn't meet those expectations but was still entertaining. Like thereallt said it was more of a disaster movie which is why it placed near the bottom of my list. Speed was number 2. Dennis Hopper was incredible as the villain and Keanu did have some great moments himself, especially on top of the subway with Hopper. This movie was unrelenting from the get go and I remember being on the edge of my seat the whole time when I saw it in the theater. Die Hard: With A Vengeance was number 3. Like Speed with the bus With A Venegeance went with a great gimmick of "Simon Says." Coming off Pulp Fiction I was really looking forward to Willis and Jackson having more interactions and they didn't disappoint. It was nice to finally see McClain operate in New York and Jeremy Irons was exceptional as Hans Gruber's vengeful brother. They did a nice job of tying it to the first movie in that way. Last but not least you got Sandy B. making her big screen splash and setting up her star for the rest of the career. Remarkable how she was able to step right in to a big production like this and go toe to toe with everyone else. It's got to be one of the biggest breakout roles of all time and the movie doesn't work without it. Bullock did have experience before rubbing elbows with the big action stars. She handled herself well with Stallone and Snipes in Demolition Man which is conspicuous by it's absence.
