I still don’t get your hate for Matthews. He’s the leader in sacks in franchise history. He gave a lot to that franchise. It’s not his fault Rodgers (insert diss to piss you off). Seriously though. I don’t understand. Clay was just as big a part of the 2010 Champion Packers as Rodgers was. A lot of Packers fans seem to forget that. I don’t think we forget that at all , sorry I don’t like to hold onto the past though and continue to think players are good when they just aren’t. See where that got the Giants and Eli.

Not too mention that defense had a lot of good - great players on it. Namely DPOY Charles Woodson , Nick Collins and Raji.
Collins injury and Rajis retirement are seriously overlooked aspects of the Packers defense sucking forever now.

I don’t understand. I'm pretty sure I'm on record of saying it 100 times before , but he epitomized the stupidity and lack of discipline of the Packers defense for years. And it was fine when he was making splash plays and making up for some of the huge plays he was responsible for but when the splash plays stop coming as much , you are just left with a shell of the player he once was - overpursuing , falling for ever single action , missing sacks and missing tackles because he has no control - than its just become enough. Also on top of that , he was always injured - and not just missing games - but there were stretches in ALOT of games where he would have to sit out. Probably because of the steroid use. I used to love Clay , his motor is great and his selflessness as a teammate is admirable - but he became more of a detriment to this defense than an asset and made some of the worst plays every game. Not just the roughing plays either. If the Rams solely use him as a pass rusher on obvious passing downs he should contribute some , but he's also going to whiff a bunch of sacks. Funny thing is about Preston Smith and Z. Smith is that people act like they are a downgrade from Matthews because of name value and "sack" numbers - but in reality both pretty much doubled up Clay and every other Packer in QB pressures.

I could never actually hate on Eli, nor did I ever hate on Jacobs, Bradshaw, Osi, or Tuck when their times were up.

Clay with the Rams AND Bad Man Burfict is going to the Raiders. Geez. The Raiders are going all in, too. I'm not really sure signing one of the worst players in their position last season really counts as being all in but whatever. Raiders still trash but I'll give them some credit for the coolest signing picture I've ever seen:

The other part of it is that Clay's game was based a lot off of intimidation, and that really doesn't work in today's game, as you're not allowed to make serious contact with QB's anymore.

Justin Houston looks like a great signing for the Colts. Pass rush was one of the areas they still needed to improve on and they got the best edge FA on a very reasonable contract. If Ballard can hit on another draft like he did last year and find a playmaker they're going to be really cooking.

Rob Gronkowski is retiring. Basically the only Patriot who it was impossible to hate, I think he's the best tight end of all time. Gonzalez, Gates and Witten might have him beat for longevity and counting stats but Gronk was a true gamechanger. Even playing well below 100% for basically the whole of this last season he came up with the biggest play of the Super Bowl - a fitting way to go out. First eligible season HOF entry for sure.

Happy from a Texans standpoint to see the back of him, he killed us over the middle whenever I've seen him line up opposite the Texans, but sad for the NFL. One of the most talismanic offensive players I've seen. As HR says, just found ways to change games time and time again. Unbelievable player

Honestly I am shocked. I really thought he would stay for another year or two but I guess he saw the picture on the wall. He’s retiring a champ and definitely the most unstoppable TE of all time. The NFL will honestly not be the same without him.

Gronk is a weird case , he is probably the GOAT at the position for me and certainly is the most dominant down to down , game to game tight end I've ever seen play. However durability should count for something (not everything) and his awesome badassery style cost him some games. Still a great argument to be made for him though.
Regardless he's a 100% first ballot hall of famer.

I like at it as a dude who put his body on the line in field and was somehow, someway able to be a party goof off the field that you couldn’t hate. He revived the spike and was so hard to hate, even as a New Yorker. Dude was a bad ass.

Gronk could easily pull a Witten though. I’m sure he knew Evil Bill wanted him on the field less or wanted to replace (or trade like last year) him so he retired. He could easily come back after a year off.

I'll easily take Gronk over Gates and Witten. Gates is completely one-dimensional. Witten is great all-around TE like Gronk is but has far less big play ability. I'd have to think about Gronk vs. Gonzalez though. Tony's durability and reliability are unmatched. About the only minor gripe I had about Tony's game was that he was much better pass blocker than blocking against the run. Ideally you don't want to keep your TE's in to pass block, especially a TE the caliber of Tony Gonzalez.

As a player, Gronk is the single most dominant TE of all time. Brady may never get past 3 rings without him, as he was a match up nightmare like no other. As a person, always found him kind of a knob, the very personification of a meathead. Trying to justify his sideline attack just sealed that opinion.

Id have Gronk at 3 behind Gonzalez and Winslow but just by a hair. Definitely my TE for 2010s all decade though.

Behind Winslow? No way.
Only one who comes close is Tony Gonzalez.
Anyways, NFL just announced that it will not follow tradition by allowing the Super Bowl champions to host opening night of the season on Thursday night Football. The Patriots will get to host SNF however against an opponent not yet determined. I say, give them the Jets. Let Le’Veon start his NY life on primetime.
Anyways, the season opens up on TNF with the Chicago Bears facing the Green Bay Packers in Soldier Field. Is it too early to shout that I can’t wait for the NFL season!

Gronk is my No. 1 simply because was the most well-rounded TE I ever had the pleasure to play. He wasn't just a super big WR. He could outrun defenses, his YPC is bananas, his physicality was unmatched and he'd bury your ass in the ground blocking if needed.
The lone knock is longevity, but given he played nearly a decade (with a body that was always a ticking time bomb), I can overlook that.

There's a reason why Packers/Bears is kicking off the season. This is the National Football League's 100th season. And what better matchup to kickoff this milestone season, than with two of its flagship teams, not to mention top rivals.

I thought it was a hidden punishment to Kraft, but he does get to host SNF which is just as big of a deal.

Got to say I'm disappointed that the 4th and 15 onside kick replacement didn't get passed at the owners meeting, I wanted both that and the change to the OT rules.

Same for me, I favor it in the notion of the coaches still only getting 2 challenges. But then within 2 minutes it gets really complicated. Like, do they have an amount of flagrance for the review? Or are they gonna buzz every ticky tack contact? (Non-factors like Haden's in the Saints game.)

I get it but I fear it’s going to dictate a bunch of huge games late. Aren't PI decisions dictating games late now as it is? I'd rather have debatable calls decided by someone who gets to look at all the replays we do rather than an official who only gets to see it live, in full speed and from one angle. They'll never be able to make things completely uncontroversial but I think this can only help.

You're not wrong at all and they obviously are , I just mainly mean that I don't want to see the last five minutes of games turn into a challenge mania (if coaches have them left) when they are just throwing one out there on a random 3rd or 4th down hoping the refs see something. I haven't read the full rules but I really hope the challenging coach has to name a player the committed the PI and on whom as part of his challenge - not just make the refs go watch the full play again and see if something happened and saving their ass.
I also hope I never see it called on a Hail Mary. Which is traditionally every man for himself and has been for years.
Overall PI is such a huge spot foul that something should have been done , but I just don't want to see it abused - and more less saved for the egregious non calls in the Saints game.
Also whats going to happen the first time a coach challenges that there was PI and the ref realizes is was far more offensive PI than defensive? That would be hilarious.
