I think I've seen Carlito's Way , I can't recall pretty much anything of the movie but I do remember seeing some certain scenes - maybe I fell asleep for it and never went back. Needless to say it didn't make my list but I do want to put it on the list of movies to watch in the near future.

I didn't make it to a full Carlito's Way viewing on the tails of Scarface to test out Shin's theory, and coincidentally CW didn't make my list.
I was partly hoping Simone would've made a surprise appearance here, nabbing the ten spot.

Simone didn't get a single vote. Not even close to nabbing the tenth spot , though that would have been fun.

No idea what Simone is.
Carlito's Way is one of the Pacino movies I need to rewatch, but I recall it being very very good.

No idea what Simone is. Carlito's Way is one of the Pacino movies I need to rewatch, but I recall it being very very good. It's this fun premise where Al is a Hollywood producer or something like that and he goes all in on this AI-generated new movie star Simone (Sim1) played by Hillary Swank. I can't remember if it was a comedy or more serious, but even as relatively young as I was when I saw it, I remember being engrossed by the concept. All that Philip K. Dick/Isaac Asimov type shit gets me.

Shin's posts on both Scarface/ Carlito's Way and the Devil's Advocate were great.
I've only seen 8 Pacino movies and Carlito's Way placed seventh. Still though it is a great movie with Pacino kind of playing a more upscale and classier version of Tony Montana. Pacino is more understated in this one which suits his character who is trying to live straight. It's really a nice change of pace from his more intense roles. That ending is so heartbreaking too.

The top 8 on my list were all movie's I have seen more than once and the 9th and 10th movies were Pacino movies I was pretty sure I'd seen and just kind of slapped them on there to finish my list.
Carlito's Way was #9.

I originally had Carlitos Way at #9 then I rewatched it for the first time in a long time(and for the first time on my 4K set up) and had to redo a list to bump it up to the #5 spot. It is such a great movie. I think there is some smoke the fire of the fan theory I read about, even though there are a ton of differences in Tony Montana and Carlito Brigante, Tony is Cuban, Carlito is Puerto Rican(funny thing about it is Pacino is pretty much playing an African American with the way he talks ). Even though Carlitos Way is set in the 70's(and is based on a book, which was loosely based on real life characters) the theory still totally works. Pacino is even reunited with several of the cast members from Scarface. The only thing missing really is Michelle Pfeiffer
The supporting cast is right on the money, pretty much every role was great right down to the minor bit players. Sean Penn as the lawyer was a great supporting role performance. The movie was also extremely well shot, Depalma did such a masterful job of directing it. I also really really love the story. Great movie for sure, one of my all time favorites.
Carlitos Way: Rise To Power the prequel I haven't seen since it came out but remember digging it, need to rewatch.

So I got to watch Any Given Sunday before this list and it had been awhile - I always LOVED this movie growing up and thought it was one of the greatest things ever. It's still good and there are some great parts to it but ... it's so 90's in the way it was shot. There was so much random quick cuts and editing in such random scenes that it almost gave me a headache. I'm not sure what Stones strategy was with that but it made some of the scenes with dialogue tough to watch.
The movie still made my list , I just docked it a few spots - something I never thought I'd do. I think Pacino is great in this movie as D'Amato and while he does go full Pacino quite a bit ... he does know when to tone it back and give a good performance.
And then there is the greatest speech in movie history.
The bit players are still pretty fun and awesome. Diaz was on another planet as the owner , this is my favorite James Woods ever as a complete slimeball and Dennis Quaid will always be the perfect aging quarterback. Not too mention the swag that Foxx brought to the Beamen role - even if he's hard to buy at quarterback.

The AGS speech is right up there with Pullman's Independence Day speech.
Honestly, it's on the strength of that speech alone that AGS made my list, and made it as high as it did. I otherwise kinda really disliked the movie.
This has me thinking we need to do a top ten more speeches countdown.

I had Any Given Sunday at #6. One of my favorite football movies ever with memorable performances from so many players.
My personal favorite scene is when Shark (Lawrence Taylor) saws Beamon's truck in half.

That's a good shout LT , also the scene where Julian (LL Cool J) punks him out in the locker room. Beaman throws the first punch and doesn't even affect him and then gets laid the fuck out with one hit back.
God this movie is just pretty much testosterone on screen. 100% testosterone. Even Cameron Diaz.

Football fanboys put this movie here. Like the only Pacino movie I have not seen.
I was going to watch it after the last time it came up on a list, but now that pi has compared it to Independence Day I am thoroughly put off.

AGS is nothing LIKE Independence Day except that both feature compelling movie speeches. In comparing Independence Day to Catcher in the Rye, I've found that they're similar in the sense that they both seem to center around a protagonist. However, I ultimately found that they're different because one is a 90s blockbuster movie and the other is a book I was forced to read in high school. By comparing Independence Day to Catcher in the Rye now, I hope I've put you off CitR as well.

Can you do Independence Day and Psycho? In comparing ID to Psycho, I've found an interesting connection: Psycho was one of Hitchcock's most notable film creations. Meanwhile, Will Smith of ID also had notable roles playing characters named Hitch and Hancock. If you amalgamate those character names, you get Hitchcock. Which leads me to believe the following: that Independence Day is likely a Hitchcock film creation from beyond the grave; that Hitchcock was the most influential force on Will Smith's Hollywood career (even more so than Jada Pinkett Smith, Uncle Phil, or Scientology); and that Hitchcock and Will Smith just might actually be the same person in some sort of weird reverse Michael Jackson/Benjamin Button type way.

I had Any Given Sunday at number 5. Everyone plays their part so well especially Pacino as the old school coach who has overstayed his welcome. I actually love the way the film is put together which is pretty much trademark Oliver Stone. That cut in Pacino's speech at 1:38 just give me chills with how it fits with the music and gives extra weight to what D' Amatto thought about himself.

I had Any Given Sunday at #8(number 7 before I bumped Carlitos Way up). I love it so much. On another forum recently there was a thread asking about top 10 favorite movies released in the last 20 years(1999-2019), I had to include Any Given Sunday in my top 10. It's my favorite football movie by a vast margin and maybe my favorite sports movie. UT has a good point about Oliver Stone's weird quick cut aways during some scenes, reminds me of Natural Born Killers but in that movie it worked to lend to the vibe of the movie, the way he did it in Any Given Sunday was like he was trying too hard. Also the scene where the dude's eyeball pops out was so stupid and unnecessary.
Jamie Fox was always a favorite in my household going back to In Living Color(and the Jamie Fox show!) so him and Pacino hooking it up in a football movie was a big hit with us.
LT and Jim Brown don't get enough love for their performances, they give the movie something that most other football movies just don't have, I can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is. One of my favorite parts is when they are practicing and Jim Brown is freaking out, LT tells him to calm down before he gets a stroke and Jim Brown snaps back at him I DON'T GET STROKES MOTHERFUCKER I GIVE'EM!
I just love all those different sub-plots that interweave through the story and the way all the different characters mesh into it. Also love how the movie is like a gritty realistic portrayal of the behind the scenes drama of pro football, it's not a sugar coated Disney football movie instead it really delves into the dark side of it all from the way concussions and injuries where dealt with back then to the slimy politics involved with team relocation from city to city. Also love the part in the finale where the old man quarterback goes back in and gets the offense moving with that one song playing and the homage to NFL Films with the slow-mo perfect spiral.

I get it in some aspects and parts of the movies , even in the speech it's fine - but there are moments where he could have held back and it would have actually made the dialogue easier to care about and follow. With all the insanity and intensity in this movie there could have been IMO a few moments where your eyes could relax or something - I don't know. It just bothered me in certain scenes that didn't need that kind of jerkiness.

I watched Serpico for this countdown and I ended up ... liking it. It didn't blow me away like other movies I've went back and discovered but it was a really good movie that made me realize I need to check out more of Lumet's career because I really like his approach to directing.
Pacino is great in this movie , it's so interesting watching where he came from after knowing his run later in his career and how eccentric he became on screen. So subdued , even in his moments of anger and frustration he doesn't go full Pacino and it's awesome. I don't know that it hooked me enough to go back and ever watch it again but I am glad I seen it and enjoyed it.
