I'm just in awe there's someone who could have avoided it for damn near 30 years. The younger me wasn't that into RPGs. Up until about 10 years ago, the only RPG I played was Super Mario RPG.

Mario Party 3 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online (via the N64 app), on October 27th. In other Nintendo news, the latest Switch game free trial starts tomorrow... that game, of course, is Cult of the Lamb, which is fantastic, as I've been wanting to play this one for a while now.

To be honest, that was just my round-a-bout way of asking what Switch games should I keep an eye out for. 126?! That's 15-20 more than I would have expected. With the Pokemon DLC due around the holidays, Wonder, RPG and Superstars would be an awesome way to get into the holiday vibes. When was the last time you played Mario RPG? Getting back to this, the last time I played Super Mario RPG, was when the SNES Classic came out. Also, I stand corrected, I currently only have one hundred and twenty-four Switch games, not one hundred and twenty-six games. Every Switch game I got this year... 2023 Game Releases AEW Fight Forever Contra Anniversary Collection Detective Pikachu Returns Disney Illusion Island Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragon Final Fantasy I - VI Collection Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe Metroid Prime Remastered Nuclear Blaze Sonic Origins Plus Super Bomberman R 2 Super Mario Bros. Wonder The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Released Prior to 2023 A Boy and His Blob (2021) Evergate (2020) G-Darius HD (2021) Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (2019) Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (2021) Pac-Man World Re-Pac (2022) Pocky & Rocky: Reshrined (2022) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2021) Skul: The Hero Slayer (2021) The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (2021) Tiny Barbarian DX (2017) Tunic (2022) Games in bold, I would absolutely recommend checking out. Although, I didn't bold TOTK (as I know you have it), or Super Mario Bros. Wonder (as I haven't played through it all yet). Honestly, out of all the Switch games I picked up this year, AEW Fight Forever was the biggest disappointment so far, I mean it's not bad but definitely my least favorite pickup. Also, I'm gonna quote you, from Emperor 's, thread... And say that both Kirby and the Forgotten Land, as well as Luigi's Mansion 3, are worth picking up. ARMS is a decent enough fighter, and I would totally pick up a sequel, but I don't know if it's something I would pick up in 2023. Now if we're talking upcoming games, I'm interested in... Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy Cat Quest III Contra: Operation Galuga Gex Trilogy Luigi's Mansion 2 HD Mario vs. Donkey Kong Metroid Prime 4 Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Penny's Big Breakaway Princess Peach: Showtime! Hollow Knight: Silksong Super Mario RPG Good stuff mate.
Was Mario RPG the first game you played through on the SNES Classic? That was a huge draw for me and I used to be so jealous that classics like FF3 and Earthbound were NTSC exclusive. Still think it holds up nicely and didn't realise how many easter eggs were in the game until CyberShell released his video.
I'm surprised you didn't jump on the Pikmin 4 hype train. Not a huge fan?
ARMS (and Mario + Rabbids) are two games that have been on the pile for years. I'm working on this side project where I try to play as many 2017 releases as possible. I'm still slowly working my way through that list, but ARMS is right up there, since it was a new IP and Edge gave it a big score. Plus, it was a brand new Nintendo IP so I always feel like I ought to at least own one game they pushed heavily.
Prime 4 and TTYD are the big ones for me. I just thought after Echoes the series needed a break, I'm just surprised it's taken THIS long and I'm curious to see what they churn out. TTYD is a money where my mouth is situation - I've been saying for years if Nintendo wanted a lazy million sales, just re-release TTYD and here we are.
In some good news, it sounds like the next Switch model will support physical releases, which with some luck, should include back catalogue support.

Big Pete, in regards to the SNES Classic, the first game I played on it was Super Mario World. I mean, how could I break in the mini console, without playing my favorite video game of all time first? With that said, Super Mario RPG was definitely one of the first handful of games I played on it. As for Pikmin 4 (as well as Pikmin 1 + 2), I definitely want to get it, hell I planned on making it a day-one purchase. Unfortunately, though, the game came out at the same time the boys needed to get dental work done, and as much as I enjoy video games, that was a far bigger priority. I plan on picking up both games, early next year, as I really enjoyed Pikmin 3 (aka the only game in the series that I've actually played).

Also Big Pete, I get it... I just completed my 2017 want list, when I picked up Tiny Barbarian DX, earlier in the year. 2017 Switch Games Arms Fire Emblem Warriors Lego City Undercover Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 Lego Worlds Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Monopoly For Nintendo Switch Pokken Tournament DX Rayman Legends Definitive Edition Rocket League Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove Sonic Forces Splatoon 2 Super Bomberman R Super Mario Odyssey (2017 Game of the Year) The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Tiny Barbarion DX Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap
Man, 2017 was such a great first year, for the Nintendo Switch. Honestly, I think next year, I'll complete my want list/check list for 2018 (Hollow Knight) and 2019 (Psyvariar Delta). Hollow Knight will be the easier of the two games to get, Psyvariar Delta will most likely be hard to track down and expensive to buy. Also, yes I keep track of this stuff, on Google Docs. I have two lists just for the games I own (one that is alphabetical order, and another one based off of release year), plus another two for upcoming releases and just an overall want list by year. That's not counting, keeping a list together for have and want games, on NintendoLife.

Been a while now, curious if they changed up the format at all.

Rockstar usually delivers games not far from their announcement honestly, Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in a matter of months upon the reveal of the game. I can see a situation where GTAVI single player comes out Q3 2024 and the multiplayer/online comes out late 2024 or early 2025, they're practically like 2 games in itself.

Going to be REALLY tough to beat that Persona 3 OST but the new stuff has had some snippets drop and they're not bad. I am feeling the 2 new songs. Still prefer the older songs of Changing Seasons & Mass Destruction. Still holding Unavoidable Battle and The Battle for Everyone's Souls. How they handle the latter makes or breaks this soundtrack, that is the type of song you tread real lightly if you're altering it. It's like trying to change Dancing Mad from FFVI. It's a long, draining battle so the music HAS TO be good.

Steph is a fucking savage. Funny people are raging this game got zero nominations for game awards in major things as if it is on the same level of Alan Wake 2, Spider-Man 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Zelda or Sea of Stars.

I do think Hogwarts was worthy of Best Art Direction as the game does look pretty good. I never played it though but I don't think it deserved to be completely snubbed and def. think there is merit that Keighley didn't want to shake the left by putting Hogwarts Legacy in there.
I assume since James Stephanie Sterling is non-binary herself that is why she is taking the stance of "Down with Hogwarts Legacy!" despite the game selling like hotcakes and garnering much of FEB-MAR when it came out. Sucks she let her personal vendetta against the game sort of stir the pot of the video as the old Sterling didn't exactly take the popular stances always. Haven't watch much of Sterling these days, think the last video I saw was her countdown for best/worst games of 2022 which I assume Hogwarts Legacy will be on the 2023 edition despite never playing it.
I know Sterling gave Alan Wake 2 a 4/10 IIRC then again.

Just finished the Final Fantasy VII Remake. And holy shit, what an experience that was. I can see why many call it the greatest game ever.
Three months can't come soon enough. I am beyond hyped for Rebirth now.

It also appears a lot of people are buying it, but not playing it based on sales vs play numbers. The game is good, was not great. And it was propped up by people owning the libs by buying it without playing it for some reason. Like sales are spiking but play counts not increasing. Steph def is not a traditional reviewer either. Frankly, Alan Wake 2 is game of the year for me. But part of what makes Steph great is they give no fucks whatsoever what anyone else thinks. They rate games on their enjoyment, with no cares for if it how others would commonly rate it. I think for all of her reviews, you have to see them through this lens, this is what one person thinks of a game that gives no fucks what anyone else thinks of it. As for Best Art Direction, Hogwarts was not better than any of the games on there. And other games that were not included were better. Franky World of Horror took a huge snub here. The 1-bit pixel art style is truly original and what this category should have been made for.

Just finished the Final Fantasy VII Remake. And holy shit, what an experience that was. I can see why many call it the greatest game ever. Three months can't come soon enough. I am beyond hyped for Rebirth now. Do people call the remake that? I heard the original called that, but the remake lost a lot of the style and made some non-positive changes to the story. If you never played FVII this is a decent way to experience it, but the original game was really special. This is doubly so given the two FF remakes will not be connected the same way. Like in the original you came out of Midgar at like level 12 or so and just entered the wide world. Your characters here will just start to get direction. Rebirth will make you start all over with a blank slate. Frankly they also robbed new players of the single greatest moment of the game, when you realize just how vast the world is. Like you spend hours and hours playing through Midgar only to realize that is just one zone in the game. If they plan to do the story in two equally sized games too, about half of FFVII needs to be cut. I really suspect them to make Sephiroth the villain alone, and write out mosts of the Jenona backstory, and streamline the story the game takes by removing entire areas, and free exploration.

Personally, I think Square should just called the first game Final Fantasy VII Part One. Then call the second one Part Two: Rebirth.
My brain initially thought that the Remake was the whole game, and that Rebirth was its sequel.

The 1-bit pixel art style is truly original and what this category should have been made for. Seems very bloated and falls under a lot of the same issues that open world games had like the open world fatigue so it isn't for me but I know it was a heavily streamed game when it came out. Regardless of the reason, it got tons of sales and buzz when it came out and it deserves some credit for that alone. I bought World of Horror, I agree with you. Game looks really good, and it was done by 1 person IIRC which is incredible. I only played it briefly, it's like Oregon Trail meets 1980's Japanese horror. But it came out less than a month ago and it isn't a known game so I get why it got snubbed.
