Are the people complaining about Apocalypse Now's pacing talking about Redux? Theatrical Cut > Final Cut > Redux I think so, I've only seen the theatrical cut once myself. I just go to the Redux version now since that was the selling point of the DVDs and Blu-Rays and what's shown on TV.

Halloween was my #1 and it wasn't ever going to be that close , I love this movie with a passion and it's up there with my favorite movies of all time. Not only is it IMO the best horror movie of the 70's it's on the short list in the conversation for best horror movie of all time.
Someone mentioned in a previous thread about Carpenters ability to work on a small budget and make a masterpiece and Halloween is no different , it's the case and point in that sense. The movie also relies so little on blood and gore like the horror tag would suggest and instead relies on a great score , good acting and a great yet simply told story and all done under the lens of some great shots on camera (beginning with the opening tracking shot). It goes to show you that you don't need a tons of bells and whistles to scare people but instead just need to know what you are aiming for and absolutely fucking nail it like Carpenter did. There are very few movies that I would put in the conversation with Halloween when it comes to being not only a great horror but great overall movie , especially when it comes to the teen slasher genre.

Carpenter knocks tons of movies out of the park. The Thing is awesome and They Live was #1 for me on the last list.

I think so, I've only seen the theatrical cut once myself. I just go to the Redux version now since that was the selling point of the DVDs and Blu-Rays and what's shown on TV. You should give the theatrical cut a rewatch. The Final Cut was great and got rid of the needless scene from Redux where they meet the bunnies again, while also reducing the plantation scene. But it did still include the stealing of the surf board with Willard being seen smiling, which doesn't work for me. The plantation scene does work storywise. After they've embraced violence (Kilgore), lost innocence (Playboy bunnies) and lost purpose (bridge scene), it can be seen as Willard's purgatory before he truly descends into the heart of darkness (Kurtz). Or just as an obvious nod to the colonialism that is an overt theme of the source material. But tonally, it just really doesn't work with the rest of the film and Coppola used to know that. If it had been filmed and presented differently, it may have been an enhancer, but even in the reduced Final Cut form, it still stands out as a negative to the whole.

I had Halloween at number 11 (I see pw agrees as well.) It definitely made the slasher a box office draw and got the ball rolling for imitators which for the most part I am a bigger fan of. Plus the 70's just has too much depth which dropped it out of my top 10. Nice to see others have it ranked so high though.

Booo! Hate this movie. Don't get it at all. Terrible shit. I got the movie but I still didn't like it much. It features a VERY unlikeable protagonist basically being mind raped as a form of rehabilitation. The movie basically asks you to empathize with him, which for me was impossible. Far as I was concerned, Alex got what he deserved and then some. The overall statement was supposed to be along the lines of how we treat the lowest among us defines us as a society, but I wasn't moved one bit.

Given that everyone who has commented so far strongly dislikes the movie, an opinion I am glad to share, which people voted for this film in order for it to reach #10? Show yourselves.

I personally love a Clockwork Orange, not for empathizing with the villain or anything, just think it's an entertaining watch...however, I did not vote it as one of my top movies of the 70's, so, t'wernt me.

It was me but I couldn’t have done it alone.
Several others must have voted for it.
This was my #1 movie for a long time but it was tied with North By Northwest at that #1 slot the whole time. It’s probably still in my top 10 but I haven’t updated that in a while.
I would discuss its merits and call you all fools but I am far too busy for that at the moment.

Didn't make my list either. Probably the biggest letdown from Kubrick after hearing so much hype about it through the years.

Hey, that movie is way better than Psycho.
Also, you people are really buying into the hype. There’s almost zero violence in the movie whatsoever. It doesn’t really show any rape at all. It’s a lighthearted comedy piece.
Geez, you mention rape and suddenly everyone is disgusted!
How bad could it be considering the mastermind that is Kubrick made it? You all love The Shining don’t you?
Sure, it’s weird, like 2001 but in a different way. I don’t like 2001 much but at least people respect it for what it is. This one is no different. Just maybe not for everyone, but it’s really well made.
Also, it literally is a pseudo-intellectual parody. It is making fun of pseudo-intellectual movies. That’s the whole point.
It’s hilarious.

I'm actually surprised Chinatown didn't make it even higher given PW's love of it and how many countdowns it topped in the past. Still though #9 in such a loaded decade speaks to the movies greatness - I think it's a deserving enough spot though and won't complain too much. I like Nicholson in this movie and LOVE Dunaway in the movie after going back and seeing it again. If you've been following us for 70 countdowns and still haven't been convinced to watch Chinatown than it's definitely you're loss and you suck.

I think Chinatown is fantastic, but just below the top tier films of the 70s - so this placing feels about right.

It was me but I couldn’t have done it alone. Pseudo intellectuals unite! I had Clockwork Orange at #4. Alex is a deranged sociopath. You're not supposed to like him. You're not supposed to like most of the characters in this movie. It's dark and nihilistic (is there a more pseudo intellectual term out there than "nihilistic?"). Alex is bad. The Ludovico Treatment to cure him? Also bad. There are no easy answers. Maybe there are no answers at all? There is only nihilism. The world of Clockwork Orange is a crapsack one. Everything is a little "off." Great aesthetics though. I totally get why some people don't like this movie. It's difficult. There is nobody to root for. Kubrick is not for everybody (I love Clockwork, but 2001 can fuck off, and The Shining is whatever). But this is a film which resonated with me when I first saw it back in the mid-late 90s and I've come back to it a few times since then.
