I have only seen Beetlejuice as a kid a few times and I always thought it was weird and didn't get it.
I suspect I would enjoy it now, especially since I am a huge Michael Keaton fan, but not sure when I will ever get to it.

Maybe not the first but it’s in conversation for of some of the more popular , especially in hindsight movies. And on the basis of the character and performance of Keaton I certainly think it belongs.

I don't understand how movies like ET and Beetlejuice DON'T come to peoples minds when thinking of 80s movies? I mean, granted, I watched them in the 90s but since they came out in the 80s they're still 80s movies and are both iconic in their own rights. ET top 3. Beetlejuice top 10-15 so I'm not too mad about Beetlejuices placement but it shouldn't be getting disrespected. I can't wait until this ones over just to see what Shootist list looks like.

Beetlejuice top 10-15 so I'm not too mad about Beetlejuices placement but it shouldn't be getting disrespected. I can't wait until this ones over just to see what Shootist list looks like. Yeah, even if I hate both (hate is a strong word) I totally respect their iconic status and place in pop culture as 80s movie behemoths. Beetlejuice was my #10, Beetlejuice let Keaton run free with insanity, an absolutely iconic performance. Definitely one of the most recognized characters/performances from the 80's.

The 80's was stacked, even in 1988 you had Die Hard, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Rain Man, Eight Men Out, A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 4, Friday The 13th Part 7....

I was a huge fan of the Beetlejuice cartoon when I was in pre-school and that version of the character was crystalised in my mind. I do remember watching the movie when I was younger, but had no recollection of it other than having watched the movie. Years later I went through a Burton phase and was really surprised by the movie. Despite being central to the story and being in the title, the movie isn't really about him or Lydia. It's about Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis coming to terms of their own mortality and learning to accept their place. It reminded me of those adaptations like Transformers where they're there but they have to pick their spots around Shia LeBouf. In those movies it's frustrating because you just want to go on an adventure with the characters you recognise, in here it obviously worked becuase the human characters did all the heavy lifting while Beetlejuice could just act as the plot's catalyst and got to be the show-stealer.
It didn't actually make my list, but I can't knock it either since it's the type of 80s movie I can always return to. These movies like Ferris Bueller, Goonies etc. didn't really advance the craft or anything, but they were just fun productions punctuated with some memorable moments.

I'm happy to see this made the list , honestly in the past I've been far too hard on the Nightmare movie and after a recent rewatch I fell in love with it. I think most of my problem is that I lumped all the sequels and mythology and everything together and took it out on the original movie but truth be told the original is a horror masterpiece and Craven at his finest. Scream is one of my favorite movies of all time and rewatching Nightmare a month back it was insane to see how similar the movies are and Craven's vision come through.
The movie , like Scream really relies on the agency they give the kids that is Wes's specialty. Especially in this movie the theme of the perils of helicopter parenting and kids paying for the sins of their parents and that is awesome. That is Scream , that is Nightmare. Also it's interesting that Wes first mirrored Psycho by killing the perceived star of the movie fairly early on. Tina was the lead in the movie for a lot of the first scenes. When Nancy eventually becomes that lead though the movie is at it's best , she is hands down , side by side with Jamie Lee Curtis as one of the best final girls ever. She is strong , she actually has to process the emotion of her friends dying and she decides to take take down Freddy - not being cornered with a knife and fighting her way out. She brings the fight. She is the epitome of heroine in a horror movie.
All in all between the themes , most of the script , the kills , the iconicness and writing of the main villain - this is one of the best singular horror movies ever made and absolutely deserving of being on the list. The sequels are hit and miss and I still love New Nightmare but the original is now atop the list for me for everything it was able to accomplish , for everything it said and for the exposure it brought to the genre.
And before anyone questions the legitimacy of the iconicness of this movie , just stop. Freddy Krueger is as iconic of a character as the 80's has to offer. He was printing New Line money of toys and licensing in no time. There is a reason why New Line is known as "the house the Freddy built" and went on to become a player in movies. #12 is probably an okay ranking for this given the fact it is a genre film but I had it in my top five for being the precursor and laying the ground work for one of my favorite movies ever in Scream. Craven is a master.

A Nightmare On Elm Street placed #6 on my list. My favourite slasher film. The concept of being murdered in your dreams is terrifyingly awesome, and the first instalment delivered the goods. The first death (I think it's the first death) with the dude being slashed in his bedroom is super brutal. Great movie.

I think I had a very different 80's experience than you all.
I think I'm one of the few who thought ET was boring. I saw it once and I am good with that. Looking back on my list I'd probably should have changed places between Goonies and Beetlejuice but hindsight is 20/20.

I had Nightmare at number 13. Really I can't top what UT said, one of the more original and iconic horror movies of all time that spawned a character that was a cornerstone of 80's pop culture. I might have had it higher in hindsight.

While I like Beetlejuice it simply is not a top 20 80's movie. That decade was stacked, and Beetlejuice doesn't quite make the cut
Nightmare on Elm Street was a VERY late cut from my list. It's easily the best horror movie of the decade IMO.

I feel like I need to see Blade Runner a few more times to get a handle on it. It does provide spectacular visuals with an interesting concept. Maybe the script needed some tightening up I don't know.
