South African data should not be trusted entirely since many people there still fear Western medicine. What does this mean? Are you suggesting SA hospitalisation figures are fabricated?

No, they are not misunderstood. Hospitals compete with alternative medicine for healthcare in Africa. So a lot of people likely were still going to healers or herbalists when they got sick and not a hospital.

So a lot of people likely were still going to healers or herbalists when they got sick and not a hospital. But if they were doing that (and holy stereotype Batman) then it was already accounted for in the previous figures for cases and hospitalisations. SA always had a wave of hospitalisations and deaths during a big wave of cases. Not this time, not even close.

Is it a stereotype when 80% of the people in South Africa use alternative medicine? This is just part of African healthcare. Unless it changed in very recent years there were more healers in South Africa than doctors.

We don't need injections, pills or dare I say even gummies. We need crystals.

Unless it changed in very recent years there were more healers in South Africa than doctors. But then presumably they also did that during the Alpha and Delta waves. That doesn’t account for the lack of upward movement in deaths and hospitalisations during this wave. Anyway, you’re exhausting, have a good evening.

This is pretty funny. Graphing negative reviews of Yankee Candles that say they have no smell maps out the Delta and Omicron waves. Psych student went all on it and found it holds during a more formal review: www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/12/01/covid-scented-candle-reviews/Kicking myself in the ass, as I should have thought of this. One of my big areas was doing research with readily available data as almost all of the cost in terms of time and money involved in research is running subjects to get data. Did not occur to me to mine amazon though directly. Could have spun this into a pub if I did it right.

Went on my break at work and witnessed local KFC shut in real time due to a positive case, poor kid had to run out in high vis and tell everyone to leave and re-direct traffic.
Went somewhere else and walked passed as my break was ending, completely shut with barricades up and staff standing out the front.
Surely from a business perspective having to suddenly shut your business the second someone tests positive on their second test (if they have no symptoms) as they don’t have to isolate is just as much of a hassle of having them have a day or 2 off until They get results?

They should also be graphing hair loss. Apparently a bunch of acquaintances of mine in the US who have had COVID are reporting massive hair loss. Like chunks of it falling out months later.

That is not actually COVID related perse but telogen effluvium, triggered by the stress of COVID, and primarily effects the unvaccinated, due to the stress of mandates and testing and what not. When triggered, you lose up to 70% of your hair over a few days about two months after the stress inducing event. It will grow back several months later if you are calmer though.

Merck pill authorized in the US for use now. That is two treatments that will start to flood the market. These were what we hoped will end the pandemic here since it is clear vaccination is not an option.

The rules are mostly in place so the gross commoners don't infect the betters on those rare occasions they have to interact.

You spread the virus if you do test positive without symptoms. One of the reasons this new variant spreads so fast is most people spreading it are not aware they have it. If you still seek to do any form of containment, this is what you have to do, as everyone there was now exposed.

Not aware... that's been there since the start. Maybe there is no variant and we're just in groundhog day.

Right wing media in and states and Aus claim you can only transmit the virus if you are like nearly dying of it and having the phlegmatic cough that it was believed spread it during the early days of the pandemic. Now we know it is airborne and not spread by droplets, we know it spreads asymptomatically as well. This is the problem with misinformation, even those who do try to stay informed get told multiple things that contradict. Whole lot of people believe this will be the last wave for instance because the virus is mutating towards harmlessness using Theobald Smith's theory of mutation towards avirulence that gets reinvented under a different name every few decades which essentially says there is a ratio between infectivity and lethality of a virus and the more lethal it is the less infective and the opposite. People believe that since Omicron is spreading faster it must be less lethal overall. Then it mutates again, it will spread even faster and lethality will decrease again to the point where the virus is entirely asymptotic. At this rate it will infect everyone and have nowhere else to spread to and die off. There is no evidence this will happen, and the historic examples that people often cite usually show the virus if you follow it until present day is still around in a more lethal forum. But it is a popular theory that so many cling to. Article showing why COVID is not tending towards avirulence just published in the Journal of Evo Biology. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jeb.13896

If you still seek to do any form of containment, this is what you have to do, as everyone there was now exposed. What I’m asking is Wouldn’t it be better for employees that have to go for a second test to self isolate until they get their result which is normally 24-48 hours atm and stay at home. Not go to work while waiting their test results and then when they test positive have to suddenly leave and workplace shuts immediately?

What on Earth is Australia doing? You do one test then come back to work, while waiting on the confirmationary second test? What the hell...
In no world does that make sense so hope I misunderstand.

We are 95% fully vaxed. You stay home until a negative test, then get a second test a couple of days later as a safety. Media is fanning the flames of insane over reaction here, mask mandates are back despite the fact that a Omnicron is demonstratably less deadly than Delta.

If the second test is a safety measure, why go back to work? Should be one test or home and two. Not this weird half assed combination. It is just policy that makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense, we are not in an eradication phase of the disease, the second test is just a follow up, obviously if someone develops symptoms before their second test, they call off work and get tested. We are not trying to eliminate the disease any more, the government is only about seeing it become endemic in a controlled way.

I don’t think you guys are quite getting what I’m saying
First test, you isolate until negative result.
Go to work in interim is fine
Second test, you can literally get it and go to work straight away.
Resulting in so many people getting their result mid-shift and said workplace having to shut down immediately during service and remove infectious person while they are on shift. Surely that as much of a massive hassle for a business as much as having someone off for two days while they get their second test?

Gonna get worse as Omicron spreads since it does not show up well on some tests. I see no way you all do not go into lockdown again next year. Once you hit full hospitals they will so go back to lockdown.

Airlines cancelling hundreds of flights today and tomorrow to avoid exposing the airline crews to COVID. People are raging. This was not an order from Biden but companies deciding they would not risk mass exposure of their employees and not having enough people without COVID to keep all of the flights going.
