US stimulus package dead in the water right now. Fight is over $500 billion dollar business bailout that appeared in the last two days. GOP wants that money to be able to be used for stock buybacks if the companies wish or to make other market investments, like the last few bailouts. Dems want the companies to have a commitment to using the money to retain the workforce and wish to block laying off more than 10% of the workforce after accepting the funds. Since this plan gives the average American nothing but a part of their tax return early I really could care less at this point. It is unlikely to pass the Senate and will be killed in the House without major changes. Adding two trillion worth of debt to prop up corporations that are failing now due to stupid mistakes that they made and wish to make a second time is not worth it to me.

First vote to move forward is in two hours. Democrats will likely block it. The focus for the GOP bill is to bail out corporations while giving people a percentage of their tax refund early to make it seem like are getting a check but really just getting their own money through 0 interest borrowing. House is working on it's own bill. We will likely get a better deal from them. Or at least will if the democrats wish to be reelected. That all said, there is no plan to get these checks to people anytime soon. May takes months for them to actually come, if at all since the IRS had staff cuts and they are doing this during an extended tax season. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-20/virus-payments-may-take-months-not-weeks-to-hit-bank-accounts

In Britain the government are paying 80% of everyone's wages under £2500. Businesses are expected to pay the rest by taking out a government-backed loan at a low interest rate. No protection for the self-employed. The markets are not convinced. The pound has pretty much never been lower vs the dollar. It has started talk of hard socialism, the universal basic income, as a temporary measure. I am pretty much as free-market as anyone here aside from maybe Incy, but I think it honestly may come to that. Can't lock people in their houses and tell them to depend on capitalism.

And no vote yet, Mitch has to delay it again. Rand Paul being quarantined and the likelihood that many of the Senate are infected now makes this stuff very interesting.

Current count is 6 GOP senators in self-quarantine. One more quarantines and the Senate flips since they cannot vote remotely.

Every Democrat in the senate voted against the GOP bill. Bill is dead now. Down to 47 GOP members right now so need Pence there for a tie-breaker to pass anything and full party unity.

The bailout was stricted aimed at continuing the wave of excesses that caused the need for a second major bailout to corporations who failed to protect themselves again and continue to engage in reckless spending with no promises they will not use this money as recklessly. Also frankly if democrats just block all deals until Nov they will sweep the senate and take white house because economic downturn is the single biggest predictor of the GOP losing power. GOP needs this deal far more than the Democrats do.

They should just pass it then ask for whatever extra they want That is not how it works. They would need a second vote for that and after the corporations got their trillions the GOP will claim there is no money left. And the optics are pretty good, few democrats wanted them to accept this deal.

The Democrats sitting on their hands until the election will set exactly THE WRONG optics....that they are taking advantage of this crisis for political gain. My wager is the Democrats risk losing the House as well if they actually go through with this.

Trump is a buffoon and all the Dems need to do is present a small target, but this is not that... This is the opposite of that and is resisting for the sake of resisting. I don't like Trump, but I dislike Pelosi far more.

They should just pass it then ask for whatever extra they want Maybe a generation ago that would be the case but in this hyper partisan space they are gonna be more worried about the optics of not getting enough for poor people while helping out corporate interests. People that like Trump are going to credit him and blame Dems no matter what gets passed and the opposite is true, so may as well do what’s right rather than what’s expedient, especially when you have leverage. I mean there are literally millions of people who think the President is better at medicine than the head of the NIH right now. I think a deal will be done in the next 24-48 hours that will include more concessions to Dems. I don’t believe that it’ll be held up through the election and I don’t believe this is resistance for resistances sake.

Can't have it both ways. Either small businesses matter or they do not. GOP was not helping small business here while giving the White House the ability to choose where the money goes. The whole deal reeks of corruption and people are starting to wise up that the rich are getting testing, getting private treatment and will survive this fine while the poor are screwed. The GOP put a deal on the table to give the rich majority of the help and let the rest of the us have scraps. Most people are against this.
As for optics when the Dems offer 2000 to the average person who under this would have gotten less than a 1000 dollars things will change very fast.

Mitch failed to change the bill and put it up for vote again and it got voted down a second time. Chaos broke out in the Senate with the two sides openly yelling at each other in a manner we have not seen in a long, long time. Decorum has left the Senate. House plan quickly coming along but Mitch likely will not allow that version to be voted on.

From an article I read, it says the Democrats are trying to leverage their beliefs and things they want voted in (that would never get voted in otherwise) to get pushed through with this bill. So every side of the playing field has their story and are pointing fingers at one another all while pointing their middle fingers at us.
Wonderful. I was looking forward to getting some money for nothing.

GOP included abstinence only education into the bill. Pork is pork and in everything these days.
The real break is in one area though, what can the 500 billion Trump allocated funds be used for. There are 5 parts of the bill the democrats refuse to vote for:
Companies taking money can buyback stocks Companies taking the money can lay off people Companies taking money can use it for political spending Companies taking money will not be disclosed for six months Trump and Mnuchin decide where the money goes.
That is the breaking point. The rest is stupid pork that all bills have but this is the breaking point. Democrats demand the money be used to retain jobs and punish those who fail to do this. GOP wants the money to be silent and to be also used in part for stock buybacks and political spending. GOP is saying trust us we will not abuse the money THIS TIME, and Democrats want that in writing in the bill itself which the GOP refuses to do.

That is insanity in terms of how it will play with middle-America The Democrat bill is absolute insanity and includes things that have nothing to do with Coronavirus.

Last two hang up right now are defining what is excessive compensation for executives using this money and stock buybacks.
Not gonna bother defending Nancy's bill. I would like to read a copy of it myself but I long broke with people defining the arts as essential. There is shit like this in the senate bill though with 30 million going to abstinence only educational planning funding. I assume the senate bill is FULL of pork since many in the GOP reject bailouts so to get them onboard they had to give concessions.
This bill after being approved to move on still needs a final vote and still needs to pass the House so expect more pork to be added over time.
A single check of $1000 will not save middle america, and most small businesses are pissed they can get low interest loans while the rest of the industry is getting no interest loans or straight cash. The money being given to major companies to bailout CEO compensation packages is enough to a keep a small business alive through this. This bill does nothing for middle america or the poor. It is a cash grab for the top. Never will pass the House in its current form.

That's hardly unhelpful to small business and it says the loans being forgiven rests on retaining their workers, which seems entirely fair. I don't think the Democrats even have a problem with the bailout money being used for stock buybacks, their problem is with buybacks full stop. Which is BS, stock buybacks are completely within a company's prerogative.... No, don't do it with bailout money but if you want to change the laws so that stock buybacks don't lower profits for taxation purposes, go for it, but don't hold up bailouts. All Pelosi's objections are ideological, which is an absolutely insane move for the Democrats in the current climate.
